Definitely an unusual pub — it looks normal, but on the menu you might find zebra or crocodile! The chef is South African and that is reflected in the cuisine. Started with the whitebait, which was some of the crispiest I’ve ever had, and absolutely delicious. Came with a little fresh salad. I have to say, the main courses didn’t quite live up to the start. I got the Durban beef curry, which I rathed enjoyed. It was very rich and dark, with tender beef. Satisfying on a warm day. My fiancé got the zebra burger, and it was really disappointing. The small burger was dwarfed by the bun, it was very tough meat, and it just looked thin and shrivelled sitting there. Definitely skip that one. Menu is hit or miss, but because it’s so unique, I’d say worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Formerly known as the Monkton Inn, I recently visited this establishment hidden away in a village just outside Somerset’s County Town. In its previous incarnation I’d have rated this as 3* — middle of the road — but with the change of management I found both the food selection and service to be significantly improved. The menu has frequent guest appearances from South African viands like Wildebeest and Sprinbok, as a consquence of the chef’s homeland. Well worth a visit if in the area.

The Monkton Inn is a great place to eat, offering value for money and quality, which is not often found together! The food is fantastic with them using fresh, local ingredients. The chalk board has plenty of starters and main courses with a good range of choice. The service is friendly and super efficient Oh, and the puddings are so totaly to die for! yum yum yum

Some of the nicest steaks I have ever had. A really good pub for people who love their food. Lovely reception from staff on arrival and super service.
