This was a very nice little café in town. We ventured in there because it was cute. We had the English breakfast and it was better than most that we’ve had. My son had the hot chocolate. He thought it was great. I also had a fruit smoothie. It was fairly priced and the food was great.

Poppies Café is a lovely little place in Ulverston and well worth a visit for an affordable, enjoyable, non-pub lunch. It’s small, with only around 6 tables, but we were lucky to get a seat last Saturday, especially as the heaven’s opened not long after we arrived! After the train journey from Manchester, we were more than ready to eat. Everything is fairly hearty, but there is a range of meals to choose from; paninis, toasted sandwiches, omlettes, baked cheese, bruschetta, breakfast and brunch, and ‘things on toast’ — which were obviously more appealing than they sound! I went for a bacon, cheese and tomato panini. It was roughly the size of my face, but absolutely delicious! There was the perfect amount of cheese, the bacon wasn’t too salty, and just the right amount of tomato for my personal taste. With chips alongside, it was a perfectly filling meal. I stuck to tap water, but the decaf coffee comes with its own timer and cafetiere, and there’s even the option of having a flowering green tea which, I assume, is a bit of a first in Ulverston! The cakes looked delicious, especially the Christmas cake, though I’m not usually a fan. Very homemade; what you see is what you get. But you can’t ask more than that.

Never much venture into the cafes in Ulverston. We decided to try out Poppies and what a treat. It had lots of nice homemade cakes. The Coffee I must say is just how Coffee should be my husband had the Filter which is freshly brewed, whilst I opted for a Cappuccino which was perfect. There is a board with Specials and plenty of choice on the menus including lots of Gluten Free items if you have a special diet I guess. The toilets are extremely clean which I think says a lot about a place. I did notice however they have a 5 star certificate for Hygiene which is always a plus point. I highly recommend this place. Not expensive either.

Poppies was full of people enjoying good food and drink, when I was in there today. There are seven tables, seating 23 people. The main courses run from £5.95 to £6.95, but you can get a filled jacket potato for £4.50. The sandwiches which came out whilst I was there, looked scrumptious. Soup is £2.90, and soup with a sandwich £4.95, which considering the sarnies are £3.50 to start with, seemed a bargain. I wasn’t hungry when I went in but I secomed(can’t find correct spelling, sorry) anyway because of the wonderful smells. There also looked to be a nice range of cakes and scones, some of which are gluten/wheat free. hurray.
