Perhaps the guide ratings on the wall and online were more for their bed and breakfast or perhaps it was an off day, but the Falcon just did not live up to expectations. We arrived to find a board outside proclaiming«Big Screen World Cup Football». Joy! However, the TV was off as it was not that close to kick off — Phew! A nicely presented eating area at just to the side of the bar looked promising, the menu had home cooked promise, even if the the barmaid/waitress was a little out of her depth on the restaurant side of things. She who must be obeyed, a vegetarian, went for the Pear, Stilton and Walnut Salad with a side order of home cooked chips, myself Whitebait followed by a half pound homemade burger with salad and those home cooked chips. «That’s a starter! Can I have it as a main with some chips? I will have to ask chef. She disapeared returning shortly with chef’s permission to fulfill this extraordinary request. My order seemed to offer little challenge. My starter came and went, our mains arrived, the salad flat and uninspiring, the homemade burger overcooked, the crispy bacon nice and crispy and I’m sure the yellow on the burger was described as cheese but offered little in flavour. The secrets to good chips is to use the right type of potato to double fry and use clean oil. The chips were very dark on the outside and only just cooked on the inside. I suspect that the oil was too hot and not clean causing the chips to brown prematurely. We requested the bill which was very slow to come and then delivered by another member of staff who had noticed we had finished our meal and were keen to leave before the TV was switched on, the person whose job it was had got distracted pulling pints for the assembling locals waiting for the match on the TV. A disappointing visit and not likely to be repeated in the near future.
