it’s a chilly, sunday afternoon and all you want is a roast at a good old fashioned pub out in the kent countryside? get yourself to the white bear. rustic, homely, cute period-features. this place has a really great vibe about it. make sure to ring in advance of turning up though! a lot of other people agree with me and it can get busy. i’d give the food a 4⁄5. i’ve had the steak and ale pie and the turkey roast before. they were good but could be served with a few more veggies. i’m looking forward to summer so we can try out the beer garden.

Lovely country pub that has all the warped walls, dimpled glass quaintness you’d expect. They have a very friendly staff which makes all the difference! The letdown is the food. I ordered veggie sausage and mash. I’m pretty certain I’ve bought the veggie sausages at the grocery store before. The gravy was strongly reminiscent of something out of a box and was lacking in flavour. My friend ordered the game pie and mash. The pie was more like a big puff pastry sandwich with stew in the middle. I’d definitely come back for drinks. Food, probably not.

This tops my so-very-British list. Rustic, charming, creaky, winding, dark, period-featured, low-ceilinged, roaring fired, fresh flowered — this place ticks all the boxes for what you expect a small village pub to be like. On top of the atmosphere, the food’s good too. Your basics are there — pies and Ploughman’s, fish & chips and treacle tarts. Also some well-considered specials(Buffalo hot wings one weekend around Superbowl! Yum) and«nicer» specialties that you always see on pub menus and wonder who orders them, like grilled sea bass. The service is hit or miss, but always well-meaning. You order all drinks and food at the bar and they’ll deliver to your table in due time. Very casual and very pub-like despite its very restaurant feel. Clientele is almost always families that seem to be out for a special occasion — a lunch with all the cousins and babies, a birthday dinner for mom. My husband and I come here, but it’s not a date place, or a young group of couples type place. If you want to come for a Sunday lunch, call ahead — if you just show up you’ll likely find a full house.

This is a proper old fashioned pub in the middle of the country. Very rustic inside with lots of cubbyholes and log fires. A great menu however we have been let down, TWICE, because they use MARGE in their sandwiches. The rest of the ingredients are always good quality but that chemically taste of MARGE always contaminates everything. We have given feedback, TWICE, about the sarnie being let down by the MARGE. But still this crime is being committed serial offenders of the MARGE variety. Just wanted to SPREAD the word. And another thing! We walked there last Sunday, a good bracing 45 minute walk, and they wouldn’t let our dog in SHOCKER. Country pubs must entertain country folk and their four legged friends.

The White Bear is a friendly country pub. The interior is charming and characterful. I had a game-pie which was pretty delicious, while my companion enjoyed fish and chips — perfect fayre after a couple of hours on the bike. The barman politely enquired where we had ridden from as he pulled a well-deserved bitter. Recommended — this pub’s greatest asset in my book is that it isn’t one of those ghastly chain pubs which always have very lacklustre food.

Good country pub down the road from the Addington Court Golf club. We had a pint and a meal outside in the sun but they also have plenty of tables indoors. You’re only ever going to come here by car as it’s on a little crossroads a long way from anything but it’s well worth stopping by for the location if you’re in the area. The food is entirely ordinary pub food, I had an undercooked fisherman’s pPie, but the real reason to come is the location and the beer.
