I developed a soft spot for Majestic Wine when I realised they sold bottles of Stump Hill by McLaren Vale. I know next to nothing about the producer or the vineyards they select they grapes from but I know their Australian Shiraz is one of the loveliest I’ve tasted. It’s robust and full bodied and has a hint of spice. At £11.99 a bottle it’s not what you’d call a recession friendly wine but if you buy two bottles you save 20%, knocking it down to a more reasonable £9.59. Admittedly, this is still quite pricey but I mean it when I say, it’s probably the nicest Shiraz I’ve tasted and I’ve tasted quite a few! If you’re not a Shiraz lover, Majestic Wine Warehouse has literally hundreds of other wines to choose from including a growing range of organic, vegetarian and British wines. Bottles are arranged by grape and country and they offer big discounts if you buy a box of six or twelve of the same wine. For me though, it’s all about the elusive Stump Hill.

If you’re looking for wine, this is the d b!!! It is literally a warehouse full of boxes of wine — well almost, as there are some stacks of beer and real ale in a bottle and spirits, but walking in, it seems to be a wino’s Valhalla. The prices are, in most part, absolutely unbelievable. We get our entire bottled wine supplies from here as it is so handy for visiting, but they have repeatedly told us to just ‘phone or e-mail and they’ll bring it round within an hour! Obviously, this doesn’t apply to domestic buyers, but the prices do apply. Most operations like this will insist on discounts for the number of cases one buys. Majestic start their discounts if you buy more than one bottle of any particular wine! Add to this the very knowledgable staff and the frequent tasting sessions(free to all), and you have my ideal suppliers. One final note; Majestic have a selection of alcoholic drinks from the cheapest(reasonable quality) wines right up to the best quality spirits with most things in between.
