I’m not really a fan of chain restaurants, but I was pleasantly surprised by Ask in Wetherby. We arrived at a potentially stressful time for the staff as there were two parties of under 10’s children running around causing mayhem and making a lot of noise. However, all the staff seemed relaxed and happy, welcomed us warmly and served us efficiently, but without us feeling that we were being hurried. We all ordered different mains, and all were good portion sizes and very nice food. I had the Linguine alla Genovese with extra chicken and I really enjoyed it. My main gripe with Ask, and actually this also applies to other chain restaurants like Pizza Express, is the price of the food. Maybe I’m just stingy, but it seems to me that £9.00 to £12.00 for a pizza isn’t really very good value for money? It’s not exactly haute cuisine is it? We tend to only go to these types of places when we have Tesco’s vouchers, but if the prices were a little lower we’d go more often and they’d make more money out of us in the long run. So the food and service was great, albeit expensive. Hence 4 stars not 5. But we’d definitely go again… once we’ve accrued enough Tesco’s points!

Ask restaurants dont really differ too much on the whole from branch to branch. The only real area they show a noticable difference in is usually service. Of the branches ‘ve visited over the last few years, this is one of the better ones. Its also one of the more compact venues, so the two are probably linked as it never really gets TOO busy, unlike some others I’ve been in. The food here is usually fresh and tastes fine, although sometimes the pasta can be overcooked and the pizzas a little burnt, but its nothing which really spoils your enjoyment. Theres plenty of choice on the menu starters, main courses, and a dessert menu, which is the only overpriced element to the place. The drinks menu is pretty extensive too — with a decent wine list, and an occasional specials menu which offers something a little different from time to time. As mentioned, service here is unhurried and friendly, and the atmosphere — particularly at night when they put the candles out — is cosy. Recommended.
