The Coffee Bank is a great place to keep in mind for the next time you’re stopping or passing through Wigan; avoid the nearby Starbucks and Café Nero and support this independent! There is ample seating inside for a variety of sizes, they happily provide highchairs and actually have an award for supporting women who are breastfeeding on the wall, so great for families. There are a few large blackboards around the room with specials and soups on, and some amazing looking cakes on display on the counter. Food is simple and filling, and all very well priced — veggie chilli with rice for £4.50? Summer fruit crumble with ice cream for £2.50? Yes please! Suffering from a slightly sore head from a family event the night before, I went for the jacket potato with beans & cheese. There’s not a huge amount you can say about food like this, other than it was great and just what I needed; generous portion but not overwhelming, and presented with a massive smile. A great place for Wigan high street — let’s just hope they keep it going.

The Coffee Bank is kind of great. It’s an unassuming café which also has a bar(although they currently don’t open evenings because apparently there isn’t the call from it BUT they do apparently sell«a lot of wine» to ladies who wouldn’t sit in a pub on their own but who would come in and have a glass of wine with a sandwich — in the afternoon I guess. I found this all very interesting). We both had paninis which were both tasty and good value. The menu has lots of good options: toasties, baked potatoes, soup etc and also what must be the piece de resistance: «Wigan tapas.» What are these? THEYAREPIES! Three delicious tiny pies. So great. Just like Wigan.
