Black Boy

As soon as you walk in you are struck by the quirkyness of the place. The pub is adorned with quarky decorations throughout, so much so that each time I am there I find myself wondering around and checking out décor. That aside the beer is great and the staff friendly, it is easy to get served when busy and the lunches are very good. The customers are friendly but not overly so and the atmosphere is releaxed but fun. I can not speak highly enough of this place, has to be one of the best pubs in Hampshire if not beyond.

This has to be the best pub ever and I’ve known a few! It simply has it all. A brilliant quirky Landlord who is passionate about most things. Ever heard of a Publican who removes all the forged pound coins from his till each night (probably 20+% of all pounds in circulation) and hands them back to the bank!!!
The food is superb and the beer just as good (well kept too) and I have no boubt the win is top notch too. But the real ace in the hole is the amazing décor. A veritable collectors laborinth, you just have to see it to believe it! Add to that the interesting locals and great lunch time atmophere plus the student set, who I believe pack it out in the evening and you have the best pub in the south of England. Even the bar staff are an eclectic mix of characters with someone for everyone!

Love this place. If you are visiting Winchester, I highly recommend you take the time and visit the Black Boy. The first time I visited, I was trying to get to their sister restaurant, the Black Rat… but they had some odd hours and were closed. But the Black Boy is quite a find.
And no… I can’t imagine this place with its name in the states.
The walk along the little river over to the pub is stunning really. Winchester has such beautiful spots.
The inside of the pub is decorated in a mix of collections of antiquities. All quite nicely displayed. We enjoyed some good food and drinks. Specially the scotch.
We will be back!

Charming little pub, just as you’d want to have it in a beautiful cathedral town. On another note, can you imagine a pub named «Black Boy» in the States? Scandalous.

This place has so much charm. Don’t be alarmed but it even houses a stuffed dog — seriously. This is a must for a night out.
