I have frequented The Royal Oak a lot since being in Winchester and it’s a popular choice for the beginning of a night out. The Royal Oak itself is an interesting building; the décor is rustic with floors upwards and downwards, little nooks and crannies all over the place — really nice for a cosy meal. The only downside is that I find it very pricey, then again it is the Oldest Pub in England after all!

Went here for lunch with 4 other friends on a Wednesday. Were partly lured in by the sign outside that said it was ‘The Oldest Pub in England’. I think that’s a load of rubbish — this place is a cute and cosy interior at first glance, but seating is scarce and we ended up uncomfortably perched on bar stools at high tables. The food was way overpriced for what it was — and it was awful, even for pub standards. I had a Mexican chili salad that was up there on my list of top 10WORST meals I’ve ever had. My friends ordered more typical pub grub — ribs, chips, mac and cheese, etc, and all of it looked horrible. I will NOT be back.

Great food, reasonable prices, broad variety of beers and friendly atmosphere. A bit hidden when approaching from High Street.
