Being a couple of «real foodies», the lady and I are pretty difficult to please. Menu was fairly conventional, with a couple of nice ideas and the specials board also delivered some really creative dishes — but nothing really groundbreaking. However, that said, the quality of food was pretty high and we really enjoyed the evening. Wine menu is extensive and really surprising. If you are into your wine, this is the place to revisit several times over.

Very cosy atmosphere. Had a fantastic spicy tomato and aubergine soup for starters, followed up by an equally delicious main course consisting of the veal chop in mushroom gravy with baby broccoli and chips. Service was great, waiting staff very friendly and attentive. Would love to come back

Despite the various accolades I found the food to be good but not excellent. Maybe my expectations were set too high but I was struggling to see what had made it win Surrey pub of the year.

This pub has won all sorts of awards for it’s food. This set my expectations pretty high but left me disappointed. The paper table cloths were inexscusable for a restaurant of this calibre. Service was good but for me the food was distinctly average. I did not think much of the wine list but having 2 vintages if crystal on the menu is either highly commendable or just trying too hard!

Excellent food and massive cellar. Not the cheapest but certainly one of the best in Surrey. menu chnages monthly and foucssed on seasonal food — always some fish and vegetarian but with more unusual tradiitonal items. Cellar very large and reasonable priced. Quite small inside with maybe 20 tables but very friendly.

It’s rare that you actually find a true gastro-pub however the Inn @ West End certainly deserves this name. Discovered during one of the Times Dine promotions the Inn is a true gem and what followed was a great dining experience and one that was to be repeated. A tiny establishment with no more than 10 tables inside in the restaurant section(although capacity does increase in the summer when the conservatory and garden can also be used for dining). The bar area is similarly small and attracts a few locals, mainly seeking out the excellent wines on offer but also partaking of the ales. There’s a boules league and a golf gathering so there clearly are regulars. There are generally two menus in operation, a weekday a la carte and a weekend set menu. The weekend set menus offer exceptional value for money at £25 for 2 courses or a shade under £30 for 3(correct as of 4 January 2008). A la Carte prices vary with starters around £7, mains around £16 and desserts at £6. There are also a selection of sides and light bites. The restaurant’s speciality is game and fish and these items predominate on both menus and on the specials boards. As testament to the fact that food should be as fresh as possible it’s not uncommon to find that the item you want has run out or is in limited supply. The hosts will inform you of this when they present the menu, however, so there’ll be no last minute oh, what shall I have’s. The cooking style is distinctly British, a rare thing in the UK these days. Food is prepared so that the flavours speak for themselves. The presentation is first class and portions are not skimpy. The pleasure does not stop at the food however. The licensee is also a wine merchant and the wine list is simply huge. There’s something to suit every taste and every pocket from a £12 regular bottle through to wines costing £200 a bottle. The atmosphere in the pub is always entirely understated. It has a kind of raw, almost Gaelic feel to it with bare floors, yellow walls and simple wooden furniture. The art that adorns the walls is eclectic and yet seemingly themed. Children under 5 are not permitted at all and children over that age will only be hosted if they sit at the table with the adults and behave accordingly. This establishment really does go the extra mile — if you’re fairly local they’ll even collect and return you home so that all of the party can enjoy a drink(or two).

The Inn @ West End is situated minutes from Junction 3 of the M3. This traditional pub serves particularly good food with the emphasis on quality of ingredients. Attention to detail seems exceptional: they source much of the produce locally, have our own herb garden and even have have their our own plucking machine and game room for processing pheasants, ducks and rabbits. The wine list shows the same attention to detail with a good range of wines, from good value to some expensive ones. After dinner you could chose from a 50 year old Armangac or perhaps one of a good range of vintage Ports. Great food, good service and off-road parking. What else do you need?
