While studying in York I have discovered the importance of preserving and caring for local woodland areas. I studied Acomb Wood a few months ago by producing a lengthy report on the social and scientific aspects. The wood is mainly used by local residence as a short-cut to get to the local Tesco. But the woodland trust are trying to encourage more people to use the wood for enjoyment e.g. picnics in the summer. By conducting a survey we found that the woodland would be much more appreciated if more facilities are available. The wodland trust obviously take these suggestions into account but they try to keep the woodland as natural as possible, e.g. by using old wood chippings to create the pathways. They have also started carving out old dying trees into sculptures such as mushrooms and faces. This gives the wood an interesting turn and is great for the local children. But the most important factor is that the local people take care of the wood and help preserve it the best they can. By introducing more local plants and trees into the woodland is something that is easily done by planting native trees and plants into the surrounding gardens. It really is a delightful little wood with the potential of being used by many more of the locals to create the perfect community area.
