Apart from the ever-​changing and ever-​improving beer selection the Phoenix also has weekly Jazz evenings with raffles and good wine.
They are super nice to everyone and are great at accompanying dogs. The location is at a quiet part of the walls and you can site right next to them in the outside area of the Phoenix.
The main problem is that they usually don’t open before 18:00 so you miss out on all the sun in the outside area, especially in the darker months of the year. It’s lovely in the summer though!

This friendly place is York CAMRA town pub of the season, a decent endorsement! There was a beer festival using the tokens system, purchased from the main bar. I had fought my way to the back serving area without realising this, so they just went to the bar to get me my change anyway! Wouldn’t happen in London.
Santas Swallie was a decent beer but 2nd selection Winters Dream was better. As I supped I caught a headline from someones local paper ‘Doctor issues rickets warning’ — seemingly confirming one of the stereotypes about the North. Interesting collection of black and white topless photos in the toilets.
