Really nice Sunday roast and steak and ale pie. Went for the smaller Sunday lunch which was more than enough for me. Decent gravy and lots of meat in the pie. Thanks

The Black Swan is a very cool 15th century house that has been turned into a pub and an inn. You really get a sense of history here. It is supposedly haunted.(A lot of places in York are supposedly haunted). The food was fine. Standard British pub food. Eating it once during our trip was plenty for me! I had fish and chips and it was fine. The service was fine. You order at the bar, and they bring the food to you. The food is kinda pricey. It was a fine place to eat, and I would recommend it to other tourists. Go eat pub food here one day and enjoy the historical setting!

A great old pub full of character, a very old pub. The beer and food are great and the staff friendly.

Charming old-worldly pub? Check. Good selection of beers and ales? Check. Friendly staff? Check Ghosts to sit and keep you company? Most Likely Check. So why the three stars? It is one of the oldest(if not the oldest) pubs of York and the building is just spectacular. The fireplace room with quirky decorations is a favourite of mine, particularly when the snow is falling outside and you’re all snug inside. However, having said that, this pub is sadly on the very pricey side as far as pubs in York go. I do enjoy coming here and bringing guests and I can sit here for hours, but likely enjoying one long drink rather than many.

The Black Swan couldn’t have been more perfect. A beautiful 15th century house converted into a pub and inn, you can feel the history seeping into you while you sit in front of the incredible hearth. My husband and I stopped in on our last night in York and lamented not finding it sooner. It is one of those places where you know you would feel at home every time you walk through the door. We ended up spending a couple of hours talking with the owner, Andy, his wonderful girlfriend Maggs(who is also head chef), and some of their friends. The atmosphere couldn’t have been more welcoming or warm, and the ales were delicious and cellar cool. I really hope to return to York, and when we do, this is the first place we will go!

Lovely, friendly, cosy pub with a massive fireplace and a decent selection of ales and nice standard food. Yorkshire puddings were not out of the freezer, but fresh-made. Gravy succulent. Pies of a good standard. Shortcrust solid.

An olde pub with lots of separate rooms. Rumours of ghosts are told! Less interesting beer selection, just Golden Pippin stands out from the four, but what a nice beer it is! Quite surprised by the suggestion of it being a good place for a quiet drink. Rammed it was!

Good old atmosphere and nice people. And one of the pub staff is ultra handsome, think call Micheal, not sure anyway. And believe he just work part time

Prepare to be transported. I could sit in this pub for hours(I DID sit in this pub for hours) and never get tired of it. The building itself is amazing and the pub boasts a large open stone fireplace with dim lighting which creates the most enjoyable ambiance. There are plenty of real ales on draft and the staff is lovely.

Locals pub. A bit expensive, and when we went there it smelled of paint.

One of the oldest, and oldest-looking, pubs in York. It is well worth visiting for the 17th century interior alone. However, it also offers a modest range of real ales, a grand fireplace, and folk music upstairs every Thursday. It is only a short walk from the city centre, but generally peaceful because of this.

The Black Swan is one of the oldest pubs in York and is rumoured to be the place where Dick Turpin himself was finaly caught! It is said that he thundered up the staircase leaving them permanatly damaged and they are to this day very uneven! so be carefull coming up or down them if you’ve had a couple of drinks! The Black Swan offers a variety of beers wines and spirits and there’s aways a tempting guest ale to try. They serve lunchtime home cooked food, at a reasonable price and it never fails to be very tasty! Situtated on the outskirts of York, it’s a great place to go for a quiet drink, and unlike most pubs in the city centre, it has the advantage of having it’s own carpark.
