Love this place. Had Oahu fish and oysters. Ambiance was great and the servers are really cool. Plantains were yummy!!!

Went for late lunch. The lady at the bar/hostess station not sure if she was a customer or employee but the once over she gave me was not very welcoming. When I asked do I wait for a hostess or sit anywhere, the gentleman behind the bar said please sit anywhere. I sat over looking the boat dock. The service was great and the food was good. I had the whole red snapper, with fries and slaw, also a cocktail and a coke. The fish was cooked well with a super crispy skin. The total was about 50.

Our experience was good on a busy Saturday night. We all had the grilled lobster, which was very fresh, expertly grilled and generous for the price. Our waitress was excellent and the staff extremely friendly and welcoming. When we walked in a gave our name, it was recognized and we were seated at the table we requested. And the hostess talked about the conversation we had when we made our reservation. Very nice! Something top restaurants in Dallas could take a lesson from! Opportunity for improvement is the sides… the garlic was swimming in oil, cole slaw was drowning in a mayonaise sauce, white buttered rice was crunchy, onion rings were just ok, but note that the rum buttered plantains were very good. I suggest the chef be measured on the sides that come back uneaten as is done in first class restaurants. This restaurant has the opportunity to be a good step above others in town if they begin to focus on the details. There also did not seem to be anyone representing top management or ownership around to check on these details and thank guests for their business. All this seemed to be left to the hostess who was good but very busy! Saturday night, high season — this is a mistake. Restroom was a disaster — beyond awful — shame on you! Go for it Fishtails — you have an opportunity to go from«Good to Great«! Give some of the local«has beens» a run for their money! The areas you need to fix are EASY!

We were here over the Christmas holidays. We stopped in one afternoon and asked about reservations for that night as it had been recommended by a few folks. The hostess said that they were full but to come by anyways as they would be able to get us in. We arrived at approx 1830, and there were in deed full. The host said we could sit at the bar or the sushi bar which still had some seats available. We went over to the sushi bar, but had to move because their main lighting was a halogen bulb that was flashing through the ceiling fan causing a weird strobe effect that was messing with my head. I don’t know how the chef working the bar could stand there all night. We moved over to the big bar and ordered some drinks with a shared appy with two mains. Food was very good and the two bartenders working were very switched on an fun to watch. They were good at their craft. I thought to check in on Unilocal and got a free drink! Good all around.

Is it possible to give no stars? Because that’s what fish tails deserves. Terrible service. Terrible food. Rude unprofessional management. Go somewhere else. You’re welcome. Yes Kelly I wrote the review soon after we got home. I was just steaming! BTW I do not think any of the fault lay with our server. He was very dear & really distressed about what was happening to us all night. He apologized over & over about the ridiculous delay in getting our food out & was terribly embarrassed each time he came over to the table. I believe the initial problem started in the kitchen. But everyone expects a slow meal in high season sometimes & I could deal with that, even though the delay was extreme by any standards(more than 1 ½ hours, with the 7 meals then being brought out over a 15 min period!). The first huge problem was the quality of the food. We had ordered 3 lobsters @ $ 45 each, along with 2 fish dishes &2 shrimp dishes I believe. Not cheap, and we also had a bottle of wine.(Just to set the scene, we were 2 couples with 3 children 11& under). The 3 lobsters were AWFUL! As dry as dust & stone cold! We had so been looking forward to them & they were massively disappointing. And you disappointed all 4 adults because each couple shared 1 lobster &1 fish dish. So we waited & waited with tired hungry kids & got terrible, costly meals. But by far the worst part of the whole night was our conversation with your manager. She talked over us and lied to our faces that what we had clearly observed did not take place(we had told her that all the tables around us who had been seated after we arrived were served long before we were). She was rude and actually told us that she had done us a favor by seating us even though we did not have a reservation. When I observed that once she seated us she was still obligated to serve us properly she blew me off. She did not acknowledge that we had been poorly treated in any way. She did not apologize for the outrageous wait or the awful food and her behavior to us in word & tone was completely unacceptable. All the other adults in my party agreed with me wholeheartedly. My husband, who rarely if ever complains in a public setting, was glad I’d spoken up & encouraged me to write this review. The evening we spent at Fish Tails was by far the worst restaurant experience I’ve had in many years.

I loved how personable our hostess and server were. My husband and I came here the night before our wedding and were seated with a nice view of the water. We loved the upbeat energy from everyone. Our server took his time to explain the menu to us and gave us recommendations that we really appreciated. We ordered the BBC(Bailey’s Banana and Coconut) as well as the Tail Chaser which were so delicious we wondered if any alcohol was added. The fresh catch of the day(wahoo that we ordered blackened) was cooked perfectly but the fries were a bit lackluster. My roasted plantains were soft in the inside with a caramelized and crisp exterior and my fried shrimp po’boy was quite delicious.

Went there as people really love it. Didn’t realize it was more casual with outdoorish seating only. Both of which are fine with us. The food was tasty. But lasting memory is of the mosquito situation. They do have ceiling fans on but that didn’t help under the tables. And yes, I did have bug spray on. Likely won’t be back as there are so many other good restaurants to try. Might just be because my expectations were different.

This place was just awesome. We ate here on our first night in town, it is located right next to the ferry and the grocery store. It has a wonderful view of the harbor. The staff was so very friendly which was a relief and the food was excellent if you are looking for a no fuss meal that is affordable… and of course the drinks, excellent! I would recommend this place to anyone in the red hook area!

Ugh. Not that great. We came here for a special occasion with friends and were not impressed. Service was not great and food was mediocre at best. After being told a couple other menu options were not available, we tried the peel & eat shrimp(not good), stuffed shrimp(ate the shrimp left the stuffing), and grilled tuna which was ok. Another piece of fish was not memorable other than dried out and overcooked.(not mahi mahi — we were told that wasn’t available). We ended up ordering pizza afterward. Probably not on our list of return trips.

Fish Tails is located by the Red Hook area and right next to the ferry terminal. The entrance is kind of hidden. There dining area is towards the back of an ice cream shop right on the water front with an awesome view of the marina. We were seated on arrival right on the veranda so we had a great view till the sun set. I wasn’t too hungry but I enjoyed the crab and mahi corn chowder which was amazing. This dish is listed under appetizer but it was a very large portion. My sister said she had the California roll and said it was nice. My parents ordered fish that came with rice and broccoli. They said their dishes were great. The fish was fresh. My only issue with this spot was that our server was a little absent minded. My mom ordered a cocktail and we had to ask for it 3 times before it was brought to the table. I also had to ask for my chowder after everyone else’s dishes had arrived. The side Caesar salad I ordered to accompany my chowder and never arrived. When the bill came my salad was never on the ticket so I figured our sever didn’t even put in my order since my chowder didn’t come till I asked for it. Food was good but service was mediocre. Wish I liked this spot better, it just didn’t impress me.

Amazing atmosphere and food! They had a sushi special which we ordered –it was so GOOD we ordered a second round. We ordered the sea food pasta, sea food platter, and Mahi-mahi ALL amazing! For dessert we had the fried banana cheese cake– yummy! The price is extremely reasonable considering we all had drinks. We got out of there for just over $ 200 including tip! We will be back on our next trip to St. Thomas!

Awful service. Yucky water and soda. I got fish and chips. But I got rice instead of French fries. The rice was bland. No flavor. The fish was big white fish. Good flavor. The batter was flavorless however. No salt.

I really don’t know what to say. Three stars is average which the food is a little better than that but the service just sucks. We live on island and the first time we «tried» to eat here we waited and waited and waited. Seriously 5 minutes at least looking for anyone to acknowledge us so we could be seated. We gave up and left. Second time, 14 months later, we are seated by a guy sitting at the bar eating food. The place was about 30% occupied so not jamming at all and we never once got offered a second drink. My wife’s soda emptied, ice melted, she had to walk to the bar to attempt a refill. The food was good and the view is nice as well. As I said in my opening sentence, I don’t know what to say. There are dozens of restaurants with great food on island and I’m sorry but $ 55 for the Red Lobster version of the fisherman’s platter is robbery. We might go back and just sit at the bar to eat. Seat yourself and get an attentive bartender. If you have the patience of Jesus and you are never thirsty, give it a try otherwise just keep driving.

Food was pretty decent. Maybe I’m just a spoiled New yorker but I’ve had better seafood dishes. We had: –fried fisherman’s platter(3.5÷5 huge portion) –grilled oysters(4.5÷5 so yummy!) –Baked wahoo(3.5.5 fresh, a bit blend and cooked slightly too long) –BBC frozen cocktail(5⁄5) so decadent I almost ordered a second one –Keylime pie frozen cocktail(4⁄5) pretty good, sweet & refreshing Service: 4⁄5 very friendly, a bit slow. Caribbean time, I guess. No prob, I get it. Nice outdoor seating. Overall pretty satisfied!

My husband and I decided to hit up Fish Tails since we were spending a lot of time in Red Hook due to the fact that he was doing Captain’s Class every night. We wanted to try something new so we decided to try this establishment. Overall we were happy and will most likely be back in the future! I had three things here: Fish Cakes, Fried Plantains, and Calamari. The first two were amazing, and the last one, not so much! The fish cakes are on the appetizer part of the menu, and are rather large and there are two of them on a plate with some amazing white sauce for dipping! They were sooo good, great flavor, fried perfectly, and the sauce went with the cakes just right! I really enjoyed them and can’t wait to order them again! The fried plantains were a side dish, and they came in a little cup/bowl. THEYWERESOOOGOOD! Sweet and gooey and amazing, I could eat these all day long! When I come back I’m definitely getting them again as well! And the third thing I ordered was the calamari, also on the app part of the menu. It was cooked decently, not too rubbery which can be a problem sometimes, however it was literally drowning in a spicy red pepper flake sauce. It was just too spicy and you couldn’t even taste the calamari through the fire sauce! I love calamari, and it can hold its own, so to drown it in a nasty sauce like this is definitely a sin… hopefully they will realize this and change their ways! I would definitely not order the calamari again until there is no more of the spicy sauce on it! Even with the crappy calamari, the fish cakes and plantains were so amazing I can’t wait to come back and order these items again! Not to mention the ambiance of the place is great, as its sitting right next to the boat docks and you can watch them come in and go out. Great location, and the tables are arranged nicely to take advantage of the view as well. A great place to relax after work and have some drinks and some good food too!
