Just had the Shepherd’s Purse and they were fantastic! Come mid afternoon to avoid the rush and the wait.

There is always a line-up but if you are prepared to wait, the service inside is pretty quick. Favourite dishes to order at Ashfield: 202 — crab meat Xiao Long Bao 203 — New Shanghai pan fried pork bun 603 — Zha Jian mian, dry version, not in soup and extra chilli on the side 612 — Shanghai noodle stir fried with pork and veggies What keeps me coming back is that the food is consistent, fresh and they have a large selection of dishes. Dr Skorpio only comes for the deep fried ice-cream with caramel sauce. Not as good as the one that Grain used to do in Pyrmont — whatever happened to them? — but not a bad version either.

If you are looking for an amazing dumpling restaurant, look no further. I live 40 minutes away and I still drive here to eat at this delicious restaurant. The pan fried dumplings are crisp and tasty while the Xiao Long Bao are filled with an abundance of flavour. The restaurant can be loud at times due to the overwhelming customers and tiny interior but this should not stop you from eating at this restaurant. Would come back anytime!

New Shanghai is the Din Tai Fung of the inner west not to be mistaken by New Shanghai Night two doors away. It is probably the most popular restaurant in Ashfield with a line for lunch and dinner at any day of the week. The dumplings are handcrafted in the front window and the interior is surprisingly spacious and decorated with nice fittings that do not match the prices or the area. XIAOLONGBAO8pcs $ 7.80 The wrap was thin with a nice texture. It held the filling and of course the delicious pork filling. It was of a good standard, served at the right temperature so no cooling time was required. PANFRIEDPORKBUN8pcs $ 8.80 These were pretty good, filled with pork and chives. The filing was quite delicious. The skin was soft with crispy patches of fried skin as expected. SHALLOTPANCAKE $ 5.80 The shallot pancake was a little bland. The texture was very nice, crisp and little flaky. I like distinct flavors and this was very subtle, a little too subtle. No danger of bad breath after this one. Conclusion New Shanghai has exceeded my expectations. For a suburban restaurant it is ahead of the competition with freshly made dumplings in a clean and tastefully decorated dinning area. Best of all excellent value and will be back to try more of the menu and hot food. Let’s hope they do not disappoint. @thesydneynoob

If you’re looking for authentic dumplings, I would not go further. New Shanghai is probably my favorite place to get Xiao Long Bao and pan fried dumplings. My mother is from Shang-Hai and was surprised that such a commercial restaurant retained the traditional Asian flavors. This place offers an enormous variety of food — Apart from the dumplings I highly recommend the snow pea & mushroom dish, as well as the sweet-sour fish. Although I am no fan of the sweet-sour combination, this is a popular local dish that I’ve been told is done quite well here.

The shallot pancakes were amazing as always. Had the prawn dumplings and they tasted really good. I like the atmosphere of this resturant. I would definitely recommend this place to any one who likes dumplings or other Asian food.

I really like the food from this place(ashfield/chatswood). The taste and serving size is decent. Although not much ambience or service per se, the value’s worth it. My family really like it.

What to do with a $ 50 voucher(won at a Unilocal event, wheee) expiring by Christmas? Why, speed on over to the nearest New Shanghai for a Chinese feast! I had a really good experience at the Unilocal event earlier this year, so I had high hopes for this. Now, this branch is right at the main road of Ashfield, which can make parking a bit tricky. But if you’re lucky, you can get parking right out front, or in one of the side streets like me. There’s also Ashfield mall nearby with parking, so that’s another option. While they accept reservations, they don’t accept reservations on weekends and public holidays, bummer. So our solution was to go for an early-ish dinner. Good move, because around 30 minutes after we arrived, a line started forming outside. The location is a bit smaller and tighter than the Chatswood one, but the décor is pretty similar. Friendly staff. We ordered: — handmade noodles — xiao long bao — fried pork buns — crispy duck — fried rice Everything was good, though I absolutely loved the handmade noodles, xiao long bao, and fried pork buns. The fried rice was OK. The only thing I would not order in the future would be the crispy duck. It was advertised as a fried duck with spices but I didn’t taste the spices, it just tasted salty? And I guess I like juicier ducks of the roasted variety. A friend, however, liked it – because, she explained, she doesn’t really like duck and liked fried chicken instead, and if it were fried chicken it’d be pretty good. All in all a good meal. We ordered so much we had enough leftovers for 2 of my lunches. Dumplings still tasted awesome reheated.

Better decoration/environment than Taste of Shanghai opposite the street. I prefer the taste of Xiao Long Bao with delightful ginger flavour rather than dominant Huangjiu(Chinese yellow wine) flavour at Taste of Shanghai. However, the flour skin is a bit dry and rough, which is not the tender and smooth texture we’re looking for. By the way, fillings of pan fried pork buns are boiling hot, and be careful when you bite.

I was having trouble picking somewhere to eat in Ashfield for lunch so I went with the one with the«winner» sign out the front. Accompanied by homemade ice tea, the sticky rice dumplings were my favourite. I was also impressed by the generous portions. So impressed that I ate 30 dumplings between myself and a friend and then we groaned for a while afterwards in a joyous dumpling death. A real winner indeed.

First time in Eastwood and I see a lovely Chinese restaurant with a line up of Chinese people. This can only mean it tastes pretty good right? Chinese lining up for Chinese… A good sign. So we get in line take a number and wait in the crowded entrance. Food for 3 about 6 dishes to share came to $ 73 so for the quality and volume was pretty reasonable(ps I think we were really hungry and ordered too much food as you do). The service was efficient so much so that they brought us the same dish twice by accident. Not that it was a bad thing, and the xiao long baos or dumplings with soup were very tasty indeed. Lots of dishes to choose from a very good prices and the food tastes pretty authentic, next time ordering the live barramundi with sweet and sour sauce baby!

When you see lots of people in a queue in front of the restaurant. You know it’s going to be good. If you walk or drive along Liverpool rd in ashfiled. It’s easy to spot this place. It’s the only place in ashfiled that people with wait and line up outside the restaurant. This place not only amazing but it’s also cheap compared to the other places like this. Food is fresh. Really Fresh. Those fried dumpling and steam dumpling are to die for. Just don’t put the steam dumpling in your mouth as soon as they serve it to you. They are hot. I learnt the hard way. Quote from my kids«See what happens when you don’t wait Dad, You pig. HAHAHAHA«. I kinda burnt my mouth.

A colleague recommended this place and we happened to be passing by so thought we would stop by to see if it was as good as he said. Awesome food. A short wait to get in on a Sunday afternoon with a shorter queue system than others. We didn’t know you could get pan fried pork buns! So good. Everyone seemed to be ordering them so perhaps a speciality. We only ordered four dishes between the two of us and didn’t realise just how much food that would entail. $ 40 later we had to order a doggy bag for the rest. Dishes seem about the same price as Din Tai Fung in the city, but servings are larger.

Similar menu to Shanghai Night next door but the attractive décor makes a world of difference. The xiao long bao here is just as good as at Shanghai Night and the pan-fried pork buns are outstanding too: perfectly light and fluffy on the top and nice and crispy on the bottom. Have also tried the spring rolls and the shallot pancake but I wouldn’t order those again as they were way too deep-fried and greasy. Stick to dumplings and you won’t go wrong!

Been quite lucky to have come to this newly renovated restaurant. It was an invite from another company I write for, and I sat down in one of the private rooms with 11 other people from the media. To cut a long story short, we were spoilt — incredibly spoilt. The food kept coming in abundance, and two hours later we all headed to the nearby train station. The evening began with a platter of cold dishes… traditional Shanghainese food at its best. The tofu was the hit on this dish — moist, filling and oh so flavoursome. Kelp…yummy. The seaweed complimented the cold dishes nicely. The fried stuff was the natural attraction — their spring rolls and fried pork dumplings — their vegetarian dumplings weren’t too bad either. Some interesting dishes included prawn and egg. The powdery coating brought an interesting taste sensation and soft texture to the mouth. The peking duck pancakes were a treat, although they were a bit messy to prepare. A flat plate and a thicker bread base would have been better for that. Otherwise the duck was just stunning. I will never forget the fried ice cream — take a bite and the batter isn’t too crispy. A lemon sponge cake like taste arrives with ice cream that barely melts. Needed to share. On a Wednesday night, the restaurant was busy as.

I’ve been lucky enough to be in Shanghai for the past month. Before I left Sydney my friends decided to take me to New Shanghai for a lunch catch up. Funny that I was leaving for Shanghai but we went to eat Shanghainese food. Anyway now that I’ve been to Shanghai I can make a better assessment of the authenticity of the food at New Shanghai. FOOD The big attraction to Shanghainese food is the dumplings so here is my verdict on the xiao long dumplings and pan fried dumplings. Price: You can’t beat Asian prices where you can get a whole basket of 12 xiao long dumplings for $ 1.50. That being said for Sydney standards $ 7.50 for 8 xiao long dumplings and $ 9.50 for the pan fried ones is a pretty good deal so tick for price. Flavour: The same soupy goodness still flows through these dumplings that causes me to burn my tongue time and time again. I thought the pan fried dumplings were actually nicer than some of the ones I’ve had in Shanghai. Not over burnt at the bottom which is good. Other: Other things we tried were the zha jiang mian(pork mince noodle), drunken chicken and fried calamari with egg yolk. Noodles were average, definitely had better, chicken was nice but nothing special. Fried calamari with the salted egg yolk was a unique combination which gave it an interesting flavor and taste. I have yet to come across this dish in Shanghai. SERVICE Service here is also similar to Shanghai — all based off a fast turnover of customers. Not looking for atmosphere when I come to these places, just looking to get my food as fast as possible so I appreciate the speed of service. VERDICT I think the food here is pretty much as good as what you can find in Shanghai. Of course everything always tastes better when you don’t have to pay as much for it so the Shanghainese food in Shanghai will always win out.

I’m not buying into this whole Din Tai Fung hype. Purely because I live 5 minutes from Ashfield. If you want AMAZING dumplings go to New Shanghai. They’ll be just as fresh(just like Din Tai Fung you can watch them being made through a glass wall), just as delicious, they’ll be half the price and they’ll have you completely addicted. Their noodle and vege dishes are also great, and although I haven’t tried it, their soups and seafood dishes are really popular so must be killer. Do yourself a favour and instead of lining up in world square for hours, jump a train to Ashfield.

Quite possibly the most delicious dumplings: generously filled with fresh and delicious vegetables, pork or prawn and wrapped in a silky parcel. Some also contain liquid, but beware if you bite too vigorously; they have a habit of spurting their soupy soul all over you. I can’t think of a more delicious, fresh and healthy meal than a basket of dumplings from New Shanghai. The service is great too. A must-visit.
