Ever craved for a fresh-out-of-the-oven baguette in the afternoon? Look no further than Alanna’s. Normally you have to wait for morning to get that smell of baking bread wafting in the air, but thankfully I walked past just in time to see them pull out a new batch… at about 4pm. Score! Yes they’re known for their range of cupcakes, macaroons and other delectable treats, but sometimes you just feel like good ol simple bread. Their coffee was pretty good too. I was set for the rest of the afternoon, belly full of yummy carbs and caffeine.

Oh joy, another bakery! The usual suspects: baguettes, wholegrain breads, rolls, pastries and cakes. Alanna’s focuses heavily on cupcakes, which are made daily and are delicious. A generous swirl of frosting and moist sponge in a wide variety of flavours. It’s also encouraging that the flavours rotate — on one visit she had banana, mango, strawberry and lemon meringue. On another, there was tiramisu, date pudding and dark chocolate. What makes Alanna’s special is her ingenious idea of half-sized cupcakes. Quite literally, the sponge is half the size that it usually is. Of course, this means you can eat twice as many. And for people who love the icing, it means an excellent(almost 50:50) ratio of sponge to frosting. The final perk of this brilliant idea is that they’re much cheaper(only $ 2) than most of the enormous, coronary-inducing muffins that other bakeries offer. I got carried away over the cupcakes, but Alanna’s also sells a rainbow of macaroons, lemon tarts, chocolate tarts, blueberry cream tarts and many other delicious delicacies. I haven’t yet tasted this part to her repertoire, but judging from the standard of her cupcakes, they would be well worth testing…
