Yes they do icecreams and they do them perfectly, but one thing I’ve recently fallen in love with that they do– is their macaroons… They are cute bite sized pieces, crispy on the outside, with perfect chewiness in the inside. A mix of classic and adventurous flavours… At $ 2.80 each or 4 for $ 9.50… Take your pick! Caramel Coffee Pistachio Vanilla Lemon Passionfruit Chocolate Coconut Vanilla Cream Raspberry Bubblegum Lavender mmm…

I’m not the kind of guy who hits up a waffle cone during the day for a pick-me-up; for me ice cream is pretty much a rare after dinner treat. That said, I have popped in to this conveniently located vendor a few times to take advantage of their cheap Boost juice(only $ 1.50 for a 250 mL) and $ 1 bottled water. These are the kind of liquids I choose to cool me down on a hot summer’s day — the semi-liquid food can wait till dessert…

I had my first(junior) Royal Copenhagen cone when I was about 5 and visiting my Gran. This probably explains the sweet nostalgia with which I view this chain. There are other flavours, but I always go the Royal Copenhagen flavour(kind of like Hoboken Crunch, rich vanilla with butterscotch chunks) with whipped cream and caramel sauce. Sadly it looks like they’ve ditched the pecan nut that used to top every ice cream, but at about $ 5.70 for a GIANT waffle cone and 2 huge scoops they are now pretty well priced(they used to seem so expensive). I grabbed one the other day for the first time in years, and felt a little sick by the end of it but persevered to the sticky end. I needed a bit of a lie down(thankfully I was in the Botanic Gardens) but have no regrets.

I can still remember the smell of waffle cone wafting out into the street from Copenhagen. Back in my teens, it was my ice-cream of choice whenever I went shopping in town. This is before I even knew what gelati was, before specialty dessert shops like Freestyle and Max Brennar started popping up, when a praline and cream waffle cone was the perfect end to a shopping trip. Times may have changed but the flavour of Copenhagen is just as good as it’s always been. I noticed a new range of macaroons available in lavender, raspberry, pistachio, caramel, vanilla and lemon flavours. It’s a bit pricey at $ 2.80 each but you can buy four for $ 9.50 if you want to be indulgent this festive season.
