Ishka really isn’t the first(or second, or third) place most guys would go to find a hat for summer. It’s focus is on hand-crafted women’s clothing and gifts from around the world, with the M.O. of paying decent labour wages to those who make the products. That all sounds great, but to guys walking past, the thought process will most likely be: «smelly girls hippie stuff». But walking past the other day I noticed a great straw fedora in the window — a perfectly hardy hat with a red, blue and cream band that gave it a bit of a classic look. Nothing dickie or too ‘hipster’ — more 50s detective on a beach holiday(ok that sounds dickie, but I promise it’s a well decent hat). And I was in the market for a new summer hat, so I ducked inside and discovered that it was only $ 19! Bargain. There was a small range of other men’s hats, too — though nothing else much caught my attention.

If you like incense and the sort of culture around it, then you’ll love Ishka. Full of cotton clothes such as dresses with tribal prints and fisherman pants, there’s also some great furniture here if you’re looking for woodwork. The silver jewellery is pretty great, they have some beautiful pieces and a wide selection. Some great candles too, which actually smell nice instead of making you sneeze and causing you to think: is this the smell they were trying to cover up or is this covering up something awful? They stock spices too, along the way of Indian flavours and there’s plenty here to feed your soul in a consumerist way whilst trying to look more earthy and less like a consumerist. It would be a good place to pick up a few items like wooden boxes to flesh out your living areas, and if you’re like me, you’ll probably end up buying some nice silver jewellery ‘accidently’ while you’re there.
