If you’re a lover of fine chocolate and carefully crafted pastries then this place is a must. We were walking past on Saturday not necessarily wanting to get desert but couldn’t resist checking out the little chocolate shop that was still open on a Saturday evening. We walked in and were instantly drawn to the wall of hand painted, hand crafted Easter eggs. The chocolate is brightly coloured and would make a great gift for the discerning chocolate lover. The display cabinets were also filled with eye catching treats with lots of different flavoured chocolates and pastries. The staff were amazingly friendly for that time of the evening and took great care in describing the cakes and chocolates on display. We opted to try the black and white macaron as it was labelled as having won an award for the best chocolate macaron. It was Devine. A pillowy cloud with chocolate center. Just delicious. One of the staff also suggested we try the éclair. Perhaps I’ve suffered from one too many bad bakery cream filled eclairs and I’ll admit I was sceptical about it but this éclair was good enough to rival any patisserie in France. It had a smooth chocolate mouse center encased in deliciously light pastry topped off with a layer of dark chocolate ganache. It was so rich I could only handle a few small bites but my boyfriend demolished the rest. I would highly recommend checking this place out. Even if you’re not a chocolate lover there are a good range of non chocolatey pastries to choose from.

I’ve tried the vegemite chocolate from Shocolate and whilst you would think it would be digusting, it was extremely nice. Others must agree as when i’ve gone back to try it again they have been sold out.

The service is excellent. I love that they always remember me and my favourite types of truffles. The basil truffle always sells out. They have an excellent range at Easter. But more importantly, what chocolate shop has such late opening hours? After midnight on weekends is great when you have an craving for decent chocolate.

Their hot chocolate is out of this world. Charming service too. Macaroons are great and the desserts are fab and beautifully presented. It’s a bit surprising this place is not more famous. Have been a few times, I can’t wait to go back. Great place to take a date or some visitors to explore the hidden delights of wonderful Melbourne.

Came in the evening towards the end of the day when they were probably getting close to closing up, but didn’t have any trouble getting served. In terms of chocolates and treats I think this place might just beat Chokolait, especially in range. Chokolait still make better hot chocolate however. But looking at other users photos perhaps the real test would have been getting an iced chocolate?

Located off Brunswick Street, Shocolate is a chocolatier that has established itself in a little nook amidst hipster grunge and bohemian whimsy. It’s a very very small space, with floor-to-ceiling shelves lined with chocolate shards and truffles boxed in plastic cubes, and twin glass counters — one filled with trays of miniature chocolate bites and the other with mousse-cakes and a bright array of flat macarons. … Shocolate offers a sweet little northern-side chocolate escapade. However, its chocolate bites vary in irresistibility, at the same just-ok standard as Haigh’s, KoKo Black, Lindt and Cacao. For more refined chocolate art, we prefer Chocolate Secret for classics, and Mamor and Xocolatl for adventure. Ironically, MoMo & Coco draw parallels between Shocolate and Ganache Chocolate: the cake-desserts at both Shocolate and Ganache Chocolate are far more irresistible than their chocolate bites. Shocolate is indeed pricier than most other patisseries, but they find no equivalent in Melbourne… apart from perhaps the exquisite works of art from Le Petit Gâteau(a long-time MoMo & Coco favourite). Beautifully balanced with a quartet of cake, mousse, chocolate and sugar components, Shocolate’s cakes(and the hot chocolate beverages) therefore come with our recommendation.

Mmmm macaroons. I was a bit skeptical when we went here because I was convinced that I’d never try a nicer macaroon(in Australia) than from Zumbo’s in Sydney. However, this was right up there with the best of them. Their signature ‘black and white’ macaroon was voted one of Melbourne’s favourites(and it’s a well deserved title). It just melts in your mouth. The rest of the chocolates and drinks we had were delightful but I think the macaroon was the favourite of our visit. Drool.

I have wanted to come in here for ages but whenever I would walk past it was never the right time, well it’s always the right time for chocolate, it was night time and they were closed. Today however was the right time and although I should have come here many months before my taste buds are very thankful that I finally made it. I ordered the ice chocolate as it was a beautifully warm afternoon and I needed to cool down, as well as a couple of delicate truffles. My favourite truffle was the crunchy peanut butter, what an amazing texture and flavour from such a small little square of chocolate. This is defiantly a work of art for the senses. The ice chocolate was phenomenal. If you are fan of real chocolate then you will like this, otherwise it might be too strong for you, this is the real deal people, just have a look at my photo.

One word, Shocktails. Boozy, sweet, liquid, cocktail desserts. I love them. Otherwise you can be like everyone else and try their macarons, perhaps even the $ 10 award-winning one, or some of their many chocolate drinks and desserts. But for me it’s Shocktails all the way, especially the Caruso Star — brandy, Frangelico, advocaat, milk couverture, cream and a pinch of star anise. Or the Shocolate Dreamers — vodka, peach liqueur, lychee liqueur, white couverture, peach and raspberry.

When I first visited Schocolate there was a sign outside that advertised it as ‘the best hot chocolate in Melbourne’. I consider myself quite a connoisseur of chocolate(I eat enough!), and resolved to put it to the test. I couldn’t believe my eyes. This is truly the place where art and food become one. Desserts that look like sculptures, concoctions including vegemite chocolate and passion fruit chocolate, and ice cream smoother than a Frank Sinatra tune are just some of the delicacies that wait inside. Since that first experience I have been back several times for a hot chocolate, dragging companions along. The orange hot chocolate(orange blossom scented) and coconut hot chocolate are brilliant with creamy textures, while the chilli hot chocolate nearly destroyed my brother’s throat — he actually couldn’t finish it. In a city where there are numerous chocolatiers, Shocolate stands out. The craftsmanship behind the desserts is wonderful, and the flavours are rich and exciting. Those of you who classify yourselves as chocolate lovers need to visit. The service is friendly and efficient, and the coffee is good too. But it plays second fiddle to the chocolate. Everything does.
