This bike shop is a bit far from where I live, but boy am I glad I made the trip. ’ Why did I? Let’s rewind to late May when I hunted down the bike I wanted on the web. Two stockists in perth: bayswater and fremantle. I contacted the Bayswater shop because it was a stone’s throw from my house. «contacted» is putting it lightly… I sent a private facebook message to, then called AND then emailed this place with no response. I even visited the actual shop twice… to find it closed. I eventually came to the conclusion that either the shop owner had gone missing, or had some weird Black Books style business tactic, because I was literally throwing my patronage at him and he wasn’t having bar of it! After over a week of hearing nothing I shot Captain Walker’s a facebook message, and they replied WITHINANHOUR.(And yep, I still have not heard from the other shop) I went to the shop the next day and had on the back of my experience with the other shop possibly the BEST customer service experience of my entire existence. I tried a couple of the bikes out, the shop owner was kind and not in a overly-exerted salesman bravado way, but just in an i-love-bikes-and-want-you-to-as-well kind of way. Genuine loveliness. I chose the bike and was told«no worries I’ll make those alternations and you can pick it up in twenty minutes» and the next thing I knew I was driving home with a brand new shiny bike in the back of my car!

The irony of the name was not lost on me as I stepped into Captain Walker’s with my trusty vintage Raleigh in several pieces after it arrived from overseas(I took it apart and packed it but could not for the life of me get it back together without a stand). The boys looked it over, declared they could bring it back to life and one week later I rode out of there with the old girl looking a feeling a million bucks. I don’t give out 5 star reviews lightly but these guys deserve every single one of them. The customer service is top notch, their vintage bike knowledge is excellent without being nerdish or snobby, and their work is great. There was a little issue I found after riding for a while and when I called them they talked me through fixing it myself. I will certainly be hitting these guys up for my future biking needs.

Captain Walker’s is the best source for anything to do with bicycles. The Cap’n knows all there is to know about bikes and has a great selection of parts and accessories for bikes as well as a killer lineup of custom and classic bikes. The most central location possible hidden near the back of the Freo Markets makes it a bit challenging to find, as the best stuff always is. It doesn’t get much more local and authentic than this. Worth a stop for a chat and a browse any day.
