Formerly known as «Heart of the Hills Market», Adelaide Hills Market happens every weekend in an old mill in Lobethal. I actually had no idea it was called anything but the Lobethal Markets until I did a bit of googling. My parents used to drive us up here on weekends sometimes when we were all bored out of our brains. Childhood seems to be a constant state of boredom, briefly interrupted by trips to mildly less boring places like the Lobethal Markets. Yes, I’m sticking to the name I know it by. These markets are your typical country kinda markets — gourmet produce, twenty million kinds of chutney, ye olde lollies, a little café selling baked goods and tea, and a lot of craft. My favourite stalls are(counting down to the top): 2. The chilli, chutney and preserves stall with heaps of taste-testers. You can kill at least ten minutes tasting everything on offer, after which Mum will spend thirty minutes deciding which variety of chilli-tomato-banana paste to buy. 1. The Gumaracha Weavers. These ladies are top-knotch. Basically you can watch them spinning thread direct from bags of sheep’s wool, then knitting it into amazingly cute and dorky jumpers, scarves, beanies, gloves, and whatever else you like knitted. The prices are actually fairly reasonable, considering they are pure wool and handmade, from sheep’s back to your back. I got a great pair of orange fingerless gloves here one year.
