Me and my girlfriend go on a weekly/bi-weekly shopping trip to Marrickville. Mostly because all the butchers and vegetables are vastly cheaper than the Randwick Coles/Woolies ripoff merchants. Regardless, it’s becoming a tradition to eat at a café before we go shopping. We tried shopping hungry, and bought way too much and had to throw crap away. Anyway, so this week we go to Café New Deli. I convinced my girlfriend to at least eat something, so she goes for the muesli, but my greedy fucking eyes go straight for the ricotta pancakes with bacon. Our coffees come first, and given the slight(massive) hangover we are delighted by the restorative nature of a perfectly brewed latte. Not sure if the water on the table is standard, but it’s always a nice touch. +1 automatically for not making me ask. Then the beast arrived. 3 ricotta pancakes topped with what can only be called«lashings» of bacon and smothered in maple syrup. I nearly stood up right there and then and sung star spangled banner. I couldn’t actually finish the salty delicious treat. Everything else looked amazing too. Can’t wait till next time we hit up Marrickville for groceries. Hipster rating: 1⁄5 Beards. If anything this was an alternative, but not actually hipster café. We are talking old school hippies and inner west«no fucks given» kind of alternative. Alternative without trying too hard. If this café was a girl, I would 100% try to take her home.

Really like this local restaurant; it’s not only good quality dining, but makes for some variety in Marrickville. It’s bigger inside than you might think from walking past, and has several outdoor tables when the weather’s good. Inside is tasteful, dim, and relaxed. The evening meals(I’ve not been here during the day) are hearty and quality. Lamb shank, grilled fish, risotto: you’ve seen these sorts of things before. But the sauces and vegetable accompaniments strike the right balance of being interesting without being needlessly over-the-top. The staff are really great, and we always get a kick out of the owners. Desserts are a highlight: there are several, and they’re all decadent. They recently won a public vote to get some council development money. The last time we were in they said they were going to refurb and possibly add some cocktail bar capacity. I think it’s only open Thu-Sat; certainly there are early-week nights when they’re not open.
