I studied abroad in Melbourne five years ago and I am still looking for a hot chocolate that even comes close to that of Chokolait. In complete seriousness this place has become stuff of legends in my world, and any poor unsuspecting soul that mentions their time spent in Melbourne is subject to interrogation of their chocolate drinking habits. The only thing remotely close to their hot chocolate is their iced chocolate, which I thought would be inferior but is somehow equally good on an entirely separate plane. I’m here on Unilocal because on a whim I decided to see if this place still exists(for if I ever return to Melbourne this will be my first stop), and felt the need to give it a review, 5 years overdue. At the risk of sounding totally insane, so great is my love for this place that it has actually led to a lifelong hot chocolate quest to fill my Chokolait void. It started locally, across LA and Northern California, and has since become part of every vacation I take, to find the top hot chocolate spots and viciously compare them to the ones I drank at Chokolait. So, if you’re ever in the neighborhood of Little Collins St. stop by and have a hot chocolate, and know that somewhere in the world I’m jealous.

If you really like chocolate, this is a pretty good spot for you! They have an extensive range of hot chocolate, deserts and chocolates on offer, but it is with the chocolate pavlova that my heart skips a beat! There is a variety of seating on offer in this tucked away café, whether you need a cosy table or a sofa to chat on Chokolait has it all. Service is quick and friendly with takeout also available.

Being a chocolate lover, I have to say that the chocolate was scrumptious and delicious, but the price not so much to my taste. The ice cream we ordered with strawberry cost $ 14.00, which was yummy! It had strawberries of course and was nicely decorated with chocolate pieces and of course ice cream. It did not last long to finish and I wanted more. This is one spot I will stop by again if I was in Australia, especially since its inside the Royal Arcade tucked downstairs like some hidden treasure.

Chokolait is tucked away down a little staircase in the Royal Arcade, which is a good thing when you’re trying to escape the pre-Christmas madness of the CBD. It took me a long long while to decide on a drink, as they have coffees, chocolate drinks, coffee and chocolate drinks and even smoothies. Also, most everything comes in hot or cold, milk and dark varieties. decisions, decisions. I ended up having a dark chocolate iced mocha. yum, yum, yum. A hot drink may have been a better choice, though, as I downed my cold beverage in about two sips. too good. We also had the choclate fondue, which comes with strawberries, banana and marshmallow. I most definitely licked the bowl clean.

Try the chocolate pavlova, the best in Melbourne. The homemade ice tea and ice coffee are so good too

It’s still difficult to concentrate, post chocolate and sugar rush. And in this sugar coma, you realise what you’ve got yourself into; a case of overdose, that started so innocently with eager enthusiasm for the product. I had a PNG64%(I think) dark hot chocolate. Ripping good. PNG puts out very good coffee, and I thought that the chocolate wouldn’t be too far off the mark. I wasn’t disappointed, and I was also indulged by basically drinking melted chocolate. you know it’s good when it takes more than 20 minutes to complete a simple review. I also got a really cool lime and passion fruit pannacota crème cup, with was very awesome delicious. Yes, it is hidden, but it is also very good. and worth the journey and adventure of finding it.

This is some INTENSE chocolate. How intense? My self-professed chocoholic better half was almost finished off by her«hot shots»(thick to drink) chocolate after about three spoonfuls. I had a chili dark hot chocolate with a six(out of ten) on the spicy meter. It was thick, creamy and left a pleasant burn after each sip. For those who regularly enjoy Thai or spicy Mexican, you could easily do a seven. You can upgrade to specific genuine origin dark chocolates as well, including a crazy 80% from Uganda. The thing is, unless you’re an absolute chocolate fanatic, I wouldn’t even recommend getting a hot chocolate by yourself… it’s just too much. The iced banana I saw someone else drinking on the other hand looked delightful.

Diabetics beware! I got taken here a few days ago and I think I still have a sugar high. Through the Royal Arcade and down what feels like some mysterious side alley is Chockolait. It’s a welcoming space — big comfy sofas and enough tables and chairs so you can bring your posse of cacao loving friends. The cabinets are filled with hand crafted Chocolates — some made in house and the others imported directly from Belgium. I wasn’t visiting for these, though. I was told I was here to try the hot chocolate and with six styles to choose from, all with the option of dark or milk chocolate, I needed a moment to decide. In the end I went with the chili hot chocolate, using dark chocolate and a chili kick of «8» on the scale of 1 – 10. It came to the table in a giant glass and on my first mouthful I was in chocolate heaven, but seriously worried about my ability to finish the whole thing. Thick and rich with a nice burn from the chili, it was probably the most hardcore hot chocolate I’ve ever had and indeed I couldn’t finish it, much to the delight of my friend who got to have the rest of it.

Love this place so much I went twice in one week. The pav is delicious with perfect amounts of meringue, strawberries and chocolate. The hot chocolate is so thick, rich, chocolatey and just plain AMAZING! The mud cake is also scrumptious. The layout is nice and cozy. A great place to catch up with friends or your SO. Staff are very friendly, too.

Amazing chocolate. Forgot the rest. This place rocks. The coffee is consistently good and hot chocolate(all 10 options) are amazing. I come here often and that’s the biggest praise I can give a place.

I must agree with Claire H: Best Hot Chocolate so far. I was totally amazed, and fully happy. Talked to the owner(at least I think he was) and I’ll go there again for sure. You can choose different type of chocolates, all are pretty strong, but if you really like chocolate, that wouldn’t be a problem. Very nice service, nice little place, it was not full when I went there, lovely ! Different cakes too, but I must admit that it’s been a month since my visit there, and i only remember about the hot chocolate, my bad. Another reason to go back there anyway

This place knows how to make you comfortable so that you can relax and enjoy your chocolate. No morning doof doof music here to jar the nerves. Instead you get mello show tunes that are a balm for frayed city nerves. Which goes oh-so-well with the smoooth chocolate.

THE best hot chocolate i’ve ever had. Euphorically good. Rich, decadent, velvetty but not so sweet it will make you sick. Just sip it slooowwwlllyyy — that’s if you can restrain yourself. They also do some slight alterations on the chocolate liquid like mint, orange and cinnamon. Mmmmmm…feast your eyes on my pic.

After dinner at Mamasita we decided we needed 1) dessert 2) cake for birthday So we headed to Chokolait! Even though we got there at 6pm their closing time the staff were welcoming and happy to have us stay. We all got Lemon Cheesecake, I the Iced Strawberry, and one friend the Hot Chocolate. He was amazed at the quality of it and its chocolate sourced from Ecuador. My Iced Strawberry was wonderfully fruity. All agreed the Lemon Cheesecake was rich and tasty. And then, I astounded the staff by ordering one of everything of their chocolate treats but they were all too happy to comply and count them out. Will be back

Wow, nobody’s written a review for this place yet? I mean it is a bit tucked away, isn’t it? I am a chocolate lover. I eat the stuff practically every day. And I’m very very picky when it comes to chocolate. Being from the US, most of our chocolate is just junk; it’s no good. But when I have really good chocolate, I take notice. And this place is amazing. We were here on a particularly cold and rainy afternoon so hot chocolate was the order of the day. My wife had hot milk chocolate and I had the hot chili dark chocolate and we were both in heaven. I will say that we had a bit of a sugar high after all that, but it was worth it. Definitely gives you a pick-up on a cold day. Will definitely be back to sample their other chocolates!
