Dang. The flat white I had here was probably the best I’ve ever had. Put it this way, this was a flat white I sipped slowly, savouring each drop like a good filter coffee rather than consumed in a few thoughtful gulps. Part of the reason for this may be that, very unusually, you can choose your espresso coffee(from two choices) here rather than have it chosen for you. I opted for a Guatemala bean and the familiar chocolate tones came through very clearly. Wow. I see they also do affogatos and filter coffee, which I’m definitely be trying next time.

I’ve seen the reviews and I came to confirm them. Yes people, they are the real deal. What everyone else have said here is truly accurate and the positive notes have stood the test of time. An intimate café, this is the perfect place to sit down and just enjoy your cup of beautifully smelling and amazingly tasty coffee. I have now picked up the art of differentiating between okay coffee and amazing coffee. This place not only falls into the ‘amazing’ category because of the wonderful staff but also because I found myself wanting to savour every sip. The aroma that was presented to my nose was out of this world and the flavour of the beans were carried even through my flat white, which has quite a bit of milk in it. Look if you are ever around in the area you have to come and get coffee here — this place does not get enough praise!

Campos Coffee is the gold standard of Australian coffee. There are only two — three places in Australia where you can get a perfect cup of coffee, Campos Coffee being one of them. There are places with better views and flasher service, but I go to Campos to get my perfect coffee shot.

Rate everything highly from coffee to service! Wifi would have helped with work this morning but without it it’s a cool way to relax and start the day. The chaos behind the machine is well oiled and has a soothing rhythm with the bangs, clicks, whirs and other noises. Loved it.

After an enjoying time at the Newtown Festival with my two teenage daughters, we strolled along the main road as we made our way to Campos. My 13 year old daughter wanted to know what all the fuss was about so off we went. Miss 13 tried the mocha which I had a taste of. They definitely use a rich chocolate not some cheap cocoa that many taste like. My eldest ordered a chai latte which I also tasted and yes, very nice. This was my second time to visit Campos Newtown but my first visit was for a cupping. One perfectly made coffee. Even better was that young lady who brought out our drinks was the very same person who ran the cupping session I did back in September and she remembered my face and name. I never expect customer service to remember me. Busy stores like Campos especially as they see so many but hey, customer service plus here. Ask about the plunger and one was brought to me so they could explain how it works. I’m going to go back and buy one and buy a cuppa while I’m there. If only I lived closer so I could grab a professionally made Campos coffee more often.

Damn! Coffee so smooth & creamy! Why can’t all the cafes that have Campos beans do the same?

Very funky little café just off King Street. The coffee is very flavoursome and expertly prepared at just the right warmth(this is high praise from a Melburnian!). The place can get a little crowded, but still feels homely, with a good atmosphere.

Good coffee but a 15 minute wait at 0830 on a weekday is too long for a take away coffee despite the polite service. Need more staff behind the machines. There are other shops in the vicinity making good coffee with Campos beans with faster service.

If you blink you’ll miss the door to this coffee haven. So don’t blink. Think of the weeping angels and scuttle through this door for the sweet elixir that will keep you safe. The space is small inside, however the staff are friendly and the coffee is good. They have a range of coffee beans. I wasn’t there long enough to figure out if they did food as I needed to wiggle my way down the road to my physio appointment, but it is a good fast service with a smile. And good coffee, did I mention that already?

Just when I was starting to wonder if there was any good coffee in Australia, enter Campos. Quality coffee, friendly service, nice warm modern atmosphere. And I love Newtown– funky, grungy, full of Asian restaurants and used bookstores.

While not as quaint as you’d hope your local coffee shop would be, it’s all about the beans here. Campos has developed as a rep as an absolute coffee institution, and while I can’t say there coffee isn’t delicious, I can say that I have had coffees lately that are much better(cough, cough. The House). The ambiance is somewhat commercial and the never-ending buzz of caffeine crazies waiting for their fix only fuels that fire. I wouldn’t feel comfortable taking a load off here for more than 30 minutes, but I would definitely say it’s by far the best coffee on King Street.

exquisite specialty coffee. yes i said it. sorry Starbies, you’ve got nothing on Oz when it comes to coffee. every cup of coffee is special, the flavors are bold but not burned, a traditional yet rich, true coffee flavor and smell. we came for Coffee Cupping, like wine tasting for buyers but open to the general public. while we waited in the shop, you could hear the buzz of conversation, grinding of beans, aromatic coffee smell, and see cups beautifully foam frothed toped with latte art. when the barista approached and asked us if we were here for the Coffee Cupping session I nodded and she motioned to follow her. we did into the back of the store, through the back wall, up the stairs into a dimly lit room let up with a long table prepared with cups of hot water, coffee grinds, and spatoon cups. the head Barista introduced himself and took us through the Campos coffee relationship with the farmers, the processing, and the cupping process. it was a very educational and enjoyable experience. to top it off, we got to each take home a bag of beans and had the opportunity to buy super special harvests from Kenya and Brasil. it may be a few months, but i can’t wait to come back!

This place seems to be packed at any time of day and it is no wonder why when you find out about the effort Campos Coffee put into their blends. My friend and I booked a mid-week coffee cupping course with Campos for $ 20. This 45 minute session explained the intricacies of coffee cupping, from its purpose to the process to the techniques used for explaining and identifying different coffee blends. I could have spent another hour asking questions but our expert guide gave us a tonne of information from the afternoon. Although we didn’t get to sit and try a coffee from the café, I would not hesitate to drink Campos coffee blends in the future after trying the variety of coffees they select from, carefully selected, farms across the world. If you have even the slightest interest in coffee(you don’t have to be a connoisseur) this is a great course, of great value to take!

In case the name didn’t give it away, this place is serious about their coffee. Having become a fan of the Campos brand of coffee coming here was a bit of special moment — and the variety of beans available did not disappoint. The first thing you notice is the setup for coffee — they are obviously used to big rushes, with a ton of friendly staff and multiple coffee machines to handle the load. Gathering from the crowds that came and went whilst I was there they are obviously popular in the area as well. The coffee… was a little bit of an anticlimax — it was a good coffee, but I’ve had better. I was a little disappointed with my double macchiato — although it was only the small details that bothered me. My pet hate is having the coffee served in a large glass. It’s not the end of the world, but something that is not uncommon at just casual coffee stores — I was quite surprised to have it served here(a large glass should be unnecessary — a double shot is more about quality then quantity, and whilst there will be more liquid it’s not twice as much… and so a large glass cools the coffee off, meaning you have to gulp it down before it cools). Kudos on the service tho — one of the guys must have noticed that I was not 100% satisfied, and without any comment from me bought me another coffee — still a large glass, but I was super-impressed with the service and attention… especially given the volume of clients they receive. It is very rare to get such good attention to service in any venue, much less one that has such a large captive audience — so Campos Coffee, +1 to you! Coffee: Double macchiato Bean: Campos(if you had not worked it out) Crema: Not bad 8.5÷10 Overall Taste: Nice, 8.5÷10 Served in: Latte glass(–1) Preparation: Quite good, my first was a bit milky, but the replacement was much better.

Book a cupping room session on the weekend. Note this means you need to make a reservation prior to just showing up(a few days in advance at a minimum). The cupping room is an experience that few get to experience. Plus it only costs $ 9 per person. As you wait for the cupping room you just hang out in the coffee shop amazed at the crowds, the various coffee machines(will discuss later), and the feel of the coffee culture here. Then someone comes down and brings you to a secret room up a flight of stairs in the back of the shop. Now your experience begins. This gives you an in depth and behind the scenes look at the Campos brand. You will learn about the various farms and types of coffee bean prep methods, how the beans at Campos are tested for flavours, how flavours are mixed, and then get to do it yourself. You will get to try five or six different coffees with the owner or a fairly high up staff member who has gone on trips to coffee tastings at the farms. After that, you can buy some of their bean on discount(pretty much means your trip to the cupping room was free). Afterwards, if you want more coffee, you can get it. From the regular(still very high quality) espresso machines, to the Slayer, to the dutch cold coffee filter you have many choices of bean and machine. I only wish I lived closer to this place so this could be my local coffee shop.

You could be excused for thinking that you’re in a night club if you rock up here at 10am looking for a coffee. The crowd is 5 deep at the counter, and people are filling at the high tables, throwing back coffees and having animated conversations with friends and colleagues. The baristas are focused and the service efficient at this Newtown institution. The idea is come in, get your fix, and then move on out the way for the next caffeine addict. Don’t come here looking for brunch — there’s a small selection of cakes and pastry on offer but everything else is shunned in an attempt to keep the focus on the bean. Freshly roasted beans are delivered from their nearby roastery — you can try the house blend through the espresso machine or take home a bag of blended or single origin coffee.

If coffee for you is a lifestyle, as opposed to a hot drink, then you will know Campos. You just will. If you don’t, then you either need to reconsider your lifestyle or burst your sheltering bubble. Campos is an internationally renowned Australian coffee company that is well deserved of its renown. There are always at least three people manning their coffee machines and the time of writing there are five good looking men on the machines and one good looking lady taking orders. The staff here are as consistently friendly as their coffee is delicious, which explains why the tiny shop is packed and the line-up for takeaways trails out the door and down Missenden Rd every day that it’s open. The shop itself has only seven tall but small round tables in the cramped back room and one long bench lining the wall of the narrow coffee shop, making space for as many caffeinds as the small shop allows. The Campos brand is spreading far and wide, but their HQ is still the best place to go to get the most out of this amazing bean. They also have at least 10 different bean blends available to be taken home and offer coffee’s next big thing, «Dutch Coffee»(cold drip) in frosted piccolo glasses — today’s is made from an Ethiopian Sidamo bean. Campos coffee is proven and piquant, reliable and rapturous. The review in a sentence or three? Hot baristas at Campos. And the coffee is great too. Yum and Yum.

I very clearly remember the day Campos Coffee and I met. I was at my cousin’s house. She was showing off her new coffee machine. We were making affogato(our fathers would be proud). She was over excited to show me her coffee beans. I too get excited by good beans, but my cousin was getting beyond delirious and I began feeling sceptical. But the coffee jar opened and the room filled with the most amazing aroma. And this was before we even started to extract it! Where did you buy this coffee? I had to ask. Campos in Newtown. Oh yeah, it’s only the best coffee in Sydney. The rest of the cousins joined in. Now I only ever go to Campos to buy my coffee beans. I have never ordered an actual coffee here as such but I’m sure it is just as good made by their actual baristas. It should be noted that I even managed convert my father to Campos beans after using Vittoria for over 10 years. Damn good!

The gourmet coffee scene in Newtown can be divided in to two camps — those who choose Luxe Bakery, and those whose loyalties lie next door, at Campos. I’ve not decided which of the two I prefer — both seem different in ambience to me. When I visited Campos, the first thing I noticed was the richly caffeinated wafts of coffee that linger throughout the café. I loved the metal containers nailed to the back wall filled with a huge variety of coffee beans, and they also have an eclectic range of coffee grinders. These give the unmistakeable message that Campos is first-and-foremost a coffee shop, with food being of secondary importance to them. Campos makes an incredible Affrogato — an ivory ice cream island surrounded by a rich, dark lake of coffee. What’s also good to know is that Campos offer coffee-tasting sessions where you can taste a number of different roasts and blends until you find your favourite. This is a brilliant idea, especially when confronted with their extensive range of beans. It also goes to confirm my observation that Campos is the best place to go for coffee, whereas Luxe would be my choice for breakfast/lunch or a snack. That’s just my preference though — go make your own.
