We came here because my partner saw a picture on Instagram of their amazing ‘3 cheese toastie’(what is it with Sydney and their obsession with toasties? I’m not complaining: P). This toastie includes Taleggio, Cheddar & Truffle cheese … I did not need any convincing! It’s just off the main drag in Newtown, and is a hipster’s delight. We sat at the bar, and watched the very very serious preparation of our toasties. Very. Serious. Business. ! Accompanying our toastie was a very nice(South Australian) pinot noir. The poshest cheese toastie meal I’ve ever had … and the best — WOW!!! There were so many other meals we could have tried … but if we come back here, it will be hard to go past having another toastie, haaha!

Well I’ve impressed my lady friend enormously. What more needs to be said?! Delicious and interesting food, same for the wine. We’ll be back.

The latest venture from Sydney Star Chef Elvis Abrahanowicz of Porteno fame and Jake, one of the geniuses that brought us Mary’s Burgers, just around the corner. This place reminds me of cross between an old New York City deli and Mario Batali’s family sandwich shop in Seattle, Salumi. The interior is small, but it is beautifully outfitted and the décor is charming. I can definitely see Elvis’s wife’s fabulous sense of style at play here(and I want to know where she found those two adorable little brass pigs that sit next to the business cards). They will be expanding to a Bistro dining room upstairs in about another month. The potential here is huge; this place is a welcome new addition to our burgeoning dining scene in the Inner West. John, the husband, found it earlier this week(I think he might have gone on their first day of business) and took our son. They had the«Wurst» sandwich and raved about it. So much so, that on my day off today, I was taken here for a late afternoon lunch. I considered the Mortadella sandwich, and then saw Elvis prepare one of the charcuterie plates and considered that as well. At the end of the day, I went with my first choice(the Wurst) and it was good, very good. I can see this place being a huge hit. So much so that I wonder if I will ever be able to walk in and get a seat at the bar. Oh well, I am happy to see this business do well. I love the energy and enthusiasm these guys have for food and I look forward to coming back again soon.

The Continental Deli Bar and Bistro is the most recent project by the guys who opened up Porteno and Bodega. It harkens back to the 50s(like their other venues) and is simply a great place to hang out if you want to kill some time, as you have meat, cheese, wine, liquor, canned fish, sandwiches and everything else you can think of to imbibe in the afternoon while snacking on delicious food. They opened their doors today and I swung by for a sandwich. This place acts as a proper deli too so you can order cold cuts and canned goods for takeaway if you please, as well as their sandwiches. Service is great as everyone is super friendly, and the food presentation of their tasting boards for their meats and fish look awesome. Will have to try that next time. Had the Wurst Sandwich filled with all their Wurst meats. Hah, wurst. It’s a meatier sandwich, and one of the servers also recommended the tuna as it was his favourite. The sandwich doesn’t look like much but it’s pretty delicious and the ciabatta goes great. Comes with some crisps on the side as well. Only complaint is it’s a little expensive for what it is at $ 17, but it’s well done.
