Doris & Beryl’s Bridge Club & Tea House

Mostly I judge bars based on two criteria: vibe, and the quality of the negroni. And by «quality» I mean the ability to knock me on my butt. Gin, vermouth, campari, twist of orange rind: you’d be amazed how many bartenders can’t get this right. Dude at Doris & Beryl’s? you totally got it right.
I knew about this place via my friend, because her twenty year old daughter went there recently for someone’s birthday. So then obviously this friend and I had to visit it, to get across what-​all the cool kids are into. It’s very cute! and maybe more Surry Hills than Newtown, if you know what I mean. My friend ordered a tea while she waited for me, and it was served in an adorable little tea service thing including what looked like an additional mini-​teapot for the milk. And then I ordered the negroni that knocked me flat on my butt, and she ordered a minty gin-​y cocktail from the menu (a Knitted Sweater). We couldn’t stick around due to competing plans, and it was early evening so hard to get a take on the vibe, but it seemed like the kind of place where you could kick on for a few hours, or bring a date (a date you’ve met previously and are into, say). I will definitely give it another go.
