Sherpas kitchen is one of the few Nepalese restaurants in Sydney. The dishes are quite similar to typical Northern Indian cuisine dishes but I find the curries saltier than usual. We ordered Nepalese dumplings and their famous goat curry with garlic roti. We ordered a mix platter of chicken and vegetarian dumplings for tasting. The dumplings were yummy but we preferred the chicken dumplings to the vegetarian ones. The vegetarian dumplings reminded me of Chinese yumcha vege dumplings. The naan roti was really well made. Freshly out of the oven with soft spongy texture and seasoned with browned garlic chips — perfect companion to the goat curry. The service was a highlight here. The waiter was very courteous and prompt in serving us, possibly because there weren’t many others dining on a weeknight. P/s. The house wine was pretty awful. Be warned!

Found this restaurant very average. I got the spinach and cheese dish with garlic naan. Everything was tasty, but not delicious. The service was pretty slow(took forever to get water!) so overall, would suggest choosing another dining destination in Newtown!

As with most of the gems on King Street, this one is easy to miss, especially since they have tinted glass, and a door that’s solidly shut(and does a pretty good job of keeping out all the street sounds !). Looking at the menu, I was a little disappointed to see that 60−70% of the items sounded and read like what you’d get at any Indian restaurant, so we ordered anything that was clearly identified as Nepali. In the 20+ years of eating out that I do remember, I cannot ever remember eating meat this tender at such an unassuming restaurant. We had a beef curry, and some chicken dishes. Nepali food appears to be more subtly spiced than Indian food, and these guys knew how to cook both chicken and beef so that it melted in your mouth. The only drawback is that they dont appear to have any desserts, maybe its a Nepali thing ! :)

I loved this place. On a busy Friday a friend and I drank some ciders in the Newtown Hotel then decided we fancied something Asian-y to eat. After sitting in one restaurant for 5 minutes before we got menus and seeing that no patrons were actually eating, we headed for Sherpa’s kitchen. What a find! I love me a thali, so I went for the veg thali. My friend opted for the butter chicken. We got a pakora to share as an entrée, and also a naan. The pakoras were fairly standard for Sydney quality– not great, but decent enough. However, my thali was great! Half of it was rice, which could have been a negative but my friend really wanted rice with her meal. I told her she could have most of mine since it would be included with my thali. If you’re splitting meals with a friend, all that rice is enough for two! Paneer tikka masala, veg korma, dhal and spicy eggplant were featured, or so I thought, from the flavour profiles. They didn’t specify what was what but all was tasty. My friend was more than happy with her butter chicken. The naan was also very good. All up, the bill was around $ 65 which included a bottle of house wine. The best part of the meal though was our adorably sweet 18-year-old server whom we talked to for the good part of 10 mins about her university studies and plans for the future(to be a nurse and travel to England, where both my friend and I have lived previously.) All in all, an agreeable meal, courteous staff, and reasonable prices. I will be back!

You could easily walk past this restaurant and not notice it. You might not even know if its open, as the lights are dim. But do not retreat, go in and discover Nepalese cuisine. It wouldn’t have been my first choice of places to try, having never eaten Nepalese food before and assuming it would involve some kind of spice that may not make friends with my belly. But visiting on the suggestion of a friend was different, and I am pleased to say I was pleasantly surprised. An unlikely series of events occurred, including me committing to an entirely vegetarian meal, to accommodate one vego friend out of three. This was the best plan I thought, to try as many dishes as possible and share them around. The garlic naan was warm and didn’t hold back on the garlicky chunks. Aloo Gobi was a kind of dry cauliflower dish which was incredibly tasty even though I didn’t really know why. There was a vegie curry(Aloo Bodi Tama) which was the most Indian in flavour as well as an eggplant and spinach dish. Plus lots of rice. To my surprise none of the dishes were hot, as in spicy hot. The spices added flavour but the intensity of some Indian cooking was absent. Prices were reasonable with the entire meal costing around $ 55. I am keen to go back to try the meat dishes including goat!
