This is an epic Pie shop! It’s burnt into my memory like a childhood home it’s that good! The pies come in all shapes, sizes and varieties. Savoury pies are served in the cutest little traditional tins and have a lovely pie crust. The sweet pies will have you salivating for more once you’ve finished your savoury pie. I’ve dined in and also had take away. Tried a couple of varieties and never been disappointed, so don’t be afraid of trying something new.

Just got back from The Pie Tin. Six of us entered excited at the prospect of the variety of pies on the pdf menu. I like the place, relaxed and cosy. Unfortunately only 9 types of pie are available daily. May be best to call and check on the day. Undeterred I choose the brisket and mushroom pie, mash peas and gravy. In fact six of us chose the same pie because of the lack of appeal of the alternatives. So how did it rank? Mash-great, peas– dry, gravy-nice but as for the pie– average, even though you could tell more effort had been put into the pie they still weren’t as tasty as Garlos or Harries. The pastry as with most Aussie pies is just a vessel for the filling. Here the promise of something special was not full filled. I will return and give it another go hoping it was just an off day.

Been here a few times, always reliable. Not heaps of vegetarian options but I’m told the meat pies are great. The sweet pies are the highlight for me!

This is hands down THE best pie shop I’ve ever visited. Although it is of course a café. The eyes boggle from the moment you look at the gourmet selection staring right back at’cha. There’s something to tantalise everyone’s taste buds. At $ 7.95 they are value for money. The pies are the thickest in town and I’m not saying they look stupid, but they are insanely thick! I chose the butter chicken with green beans pie. To make it a meal you get 2 choices of salad for $ 13.95. Served on canteen metal plates, characteristic of the feel which goes with the name. There’s a cool open plan dining area with open windows so you get a nice breeze. There is an awesome selection of dessert style pies on offer. I look forward to trying a few of them over a period of time. I would have given The Pie Tin 5 stars even on my first visit. My one disappointment though is that this café only supplies forks for dine in. What well deserving 5 star café doesn’t have knives as part of their eating utensils? Overall, that is my only criticism and you definitely should create your own experience and pick up your mother sized pie with your hands. This is the way they were made to be enjoyed, right?!

Pies, pies, pies, omfg pies, like everywhere pies. How are you supposed to choose? Like srsly. Sweet or savory? I could see these thoughts passing through my partner’s eyes such was the impact of this place. I glanced at the pie counters, made a quick decision and abandoned him to find a table because for some reason at 9pm this place was packed out, people were late night pie craving that didn’t involve defrosting prepacked four n twenty pies from Coles. No, this was a proper restaurant dedicated to pies. Now that I’ve explained how pied up this joint is, I can describe how scrumptious my gooey caramel & choc ganache pie choice was… holy heaven, eat that slow else you’ll be sick, it’s so rich. We also gorged on the banana nutella pie and a classic mince pie. I was interested in trying the apple pie that ate newtown but it looked so good in counter display as a whole pie it seemed like such a shame to slice it up… If you can manage it, come here post dinner on the occasion you skipped dessert, you won’t regret it.

The long line was worth the wait(weekend lunch time). Had a delicious spiced lamb pie with kumara chips. Also tasted my partners Mac n’ cheese pie and it was delicious. We topped it off with a whipped lime pie which was lightly tart and sweet. Everything was delectable! We will be back.

The Pie Tin has that ‘Inn’ feel, old-fashioned and somewhat homely. Feels similar to a pie shop that you would find in rural areas. There are a selection of savoury pie, sides and great selection of dessert pies that are available from opening time. The most annoying thing is the time taken to serve the pies after ordering. It’s all ready-made, yet it took more than 15min to be summoned to collect the meal at the counter with the place only at half capacity. Yes that’s right, there’s no table service. SLOWROASTEDSMOKEYBEEFBRISKET&MUSHROOMS + 2SIDES $ 14.50 (Sides of leaf salad and potato salad) The size of the pie immediately stood out. It is quite big, one pie should be enough for two if you are going for something sweet afterwards. The pie is made up of a thin but dry pastry, I have mixed feelings about it. It is perhaps by design to hold up with sides such as pea/potato mash and gravy. I personally find it too dry and prefer the pastry of Bourke Street Bakery and Lorraine’s Patisserie’s better. While the filling of brisket was chunky and generous, it lacked depth of flavour and fell behind the two competitors mentioned above. The uniqueness of The Pie Tin is certainly its sides, the potato was good, served from the fridge and it did feel ‘homemade’. The salad was standard and the serving was not as generous. The plate used was too small for two sides so you are better-off ordering one side instead of two in terms of value as they use the same plate size for one or two. BLACKFORESTMERINGUEPIE $ 7.90 to $ 10.90 The meringue is very rich and thick, thus very sweet. This heavy meringue looked like it would bring lightness to the base layers, however it was quite the opposite. It was the chocolate mouse on top of the crust that made it light and somewhat enjoyable. I am quite the sweet-tooth and even I could not down half of the meringue. The base was nice, crunchy textured and flavoured but not balanced when eaten with that ratio of meringue to base. Conclusion Considering the high rating on Urbanspoon, I was very disappointed with the service and technical execution of the pies. The pie pastry is way too dry for me and the sweet pies are unbalanced. The staff need to wake up or have a couple of espressos on the house to speed up their service. There is potential here for The Pie Tin to become a house-hold name with its image of generous and wholesome food. On this visit, it was not an experience to remember. @thesydneynoob

Cool place with a hip vibe, great service and tasty unique pies. The most difficult part of my experience here was trying to determine which pie to get. They had a diverse variety of options and they all sounded so good. I went with the sweet roasted duck with cointreau and maple syrup and it was fantastic. They had some good sounding beers I’d want to try in the future. I would definitely return!

The Pie Tin, a lovely cozy place, might be overlooked because of its off-street location. Thanks to Unilocal,I can find my way to this one for the first time. This is the place for PIE and only PIE(alright… there are tarts too). A piece of savoury pie and two sides make it a meal. In term of portion, it is about right to fill-up emptiness in the ordinary hungry stomach. If there is enough space left, they also have wide variety of sweet pies as you might expected. I ordered a sweet roasted duck with potato and greek salads; everything is fresh and delicious. No chance to taste the sweets yet so I plan to go there again sometimes! Since space is limited, groups of more than 4 people are not recommended.

Go to the pie. GOTOTHEPIE! If the pie is calling don’t fight the urges. Satisfy those pangs with a trip to The Pie Tin. If all you want is a boring ol’ plain pie, they’ve got you covered. But you might have trouble turning down a mac n cheese pie, Mexican pie or Sunday roast pie. Yeah, these ain’t your average pies. And there’s a meal option too that comes with a drink and a side or sweet potato chips or peas and mash or salads. But wait, you’ve got a sweet tooth, right? No problem-o! There’s probably too much to choose from. Chocolates, caramels, cheesecakes and tarts. My favourite by far would have to be the lemon brûlée pie. There’s nothing like a little bit of citrus to cut through a hearty meal. Don’t deny your hearts desire. Follow the light to pie heaven!

I love me a pie. But being North American I sometimes miss sweet dessert pies, because they’re not nearly as common here in Oz as they were there. The Pie Tin is where I come when I need that sweet pie fix. Hidden around a corner off Newtown’s King Street you probably won’t find it unless you go looking for it(or are circling looking for a parking spot). It’s a small, cozy shop, with a few small tables and one large central shared table. Their savoury pies are varied and fancy, and I’m sure — judging by the other reviews — that they’re quite good. I’ve not had them. What I have had is their Brown Butter Pecan Pie, their Mississippi Mud Pie, and their Apple & Mixed Berry Pie. While they’re not going to make visitors from Virginia or Saskatchewan forget about their mum’s pies back home(especially between $ 7.50 and $ 10.50 per slice) they are quite delicious. They’re now licensed too, and if you fancy a glass of wine with your pie instead of coffee you can do that too.

One of the best pies place in the land of pies. Their savory pies are exceptional, we tried the duck confit and the beef brisket. The pie is filled with well seasoned fillings. They also have the bigger than your head Apple Pie which my cousin tried, we all tried to help but it was hard to finish. If you are in Newtown, this is a great place to spend some time. The washroom is located at the back of the building, ask the counter staff for a key.

When I was in Australia with a friend a couple months ago, we ventured out to the Newtown district, where I hear it’s kind of like a mix of the Upper Haight and the Mission neighborhoods in SF. The neighborhood did have a little grit to it, but it’s a cool area anyway. My friend had stored this place in her bookmarks, and it seemed like a good place to get some dessert. I ended up going for a slice of gooey caramel with belgian white chocolate, and complimented it with a 4 Pines Hefeweizen. The pie was a tad rich but delicious nonetheless. Caramel was indeed gooey, but I enjoyed the taste of the white chocolate. I also sample a savory pie, and it was just ok. A little dry, but it’s my first time having a pie of that caliber. As for the Hef, it is a solid local brew. I’m more of a beer person, but they have wine there if that’s what you prefer. The ambiance is pretty cool. The place was full, but there was a spot available by the time I finished ordering. It wasn’t even that noisy at all, so it’s a great place to meet up with people and catch up over dessert and such. The workers are nice too. I will remember this place because it’s the the first time I’ve ever had pie with beer in the middle of the day for no good reason. Vacations are great, people.

Pies are fruits of the… bakery? There’s apple pie, pumpkin pie, cherry pie, mud pie, meat pie, potato pie… I dig their sweet pies mucho! From mud to banoffee to pumpkin to cheesecake(pie?) once you try it you will suffer from pie-tin-pie-itis(or is it lack-of-pie-itis?). Their savoury pies however, are a little dry for me… not saying there’s no moisture, it’s just not saucy enough for my liking. As my husband say ‘they probably think they’re too hip for gravy cos it’s messy… but no one is ever too hip for gravy’ and he’s got a point. They do make up for it though with a good selection of sides, or if you’re around the area 15mins before they close every night they do a takeaway BOGOF deal(showing my age here… google if you don’t know). Service wise… it’s a bit of a hit and miss, but then again so are most hipster/newtown joints. Either way it is well worth a go!

Did you know they have a 16 kg giant apple pie called the«Pie that ate Newtown»? Well now you do. Tucked away in a side street, Pie tin is pretty much the epitome of deluxe-o gourmet things in pastry. Try the Lamb sausage roll, most of all try the Pulled pork and apple pie. It’s like having your cake and eating it too. Pulled pork Yes! and dessert all neatly served in delicious flaky pastry goodness. If you go in at brunch time, on a Monday youll pretty much get the pick of the litter. Other times, Bam-so-busy. Go really late before close and get 2 for 1. Lemme go on a cleanse. Pork and lamb and beef served in a carb cup. #nomnom

Pies pies pies! Savory pies, sweet pies, chocolate pies, meat pies, so many pies. Decided to check this place out cause pies are just the most delightfully fulfilling foods I’ve ever enjoyed in my life. Pies are solid forms of soup to me. And I love soup too. My friend and I split a Belgium white chocolate gauche pie and a savory pulled pork and apple pie with a side of Kumera chips. Everything was easily prepped and served in a jiffy so it’s good for those of us who work at RPA. It a small place, so don’t expect to go here in a large crowd and find a spot to sit. They also have a variety of different pies that changes daily. They have a 2 for $ 1 deals 15 minutes before closing so if you’re in the area at 7:45PM stop in for a quick grab and go.

The décor is great, with communal tables and fresh flowers & magazines but the pie I got was just awful. I ordered the steak, smoked bacon and cheddar pie. It had about 3 pieces of steak and the rest was bolognese sauce and bacon(and not in a good way). I actually had to stop eating it, it tasted and looked so bad. If you’re going to make a bolognese pie, call it that. My friend got the pulled pork which tasted okay but was very very wet inside. By «wet» I don’t mean saucey — I mean wet, water, moisture etc. Not so nice. Salad sides were fresh & yummy. I don’t know if I’d come back for salad though.

Small place but a fun communal table in the Center! Amazing pies — both the savoury and the sweet! Seriously addictive. My only complaint is that it is too good and the pieces are too large for the dessert pies. It is hard to have a favorite but I think the peanut butter and chocolate pie wins but I need more evidence(ie more pies) to really make that call. The lime one I have had a bite of — yum! And my next one will be a sour cherrry pie. As for savoury, the pulled pork is amazing although it is a little weird with the apples in it. I liked it but weird. I have had the beef brisket(slow roasted deliciousness). Don’t even try to have the ‘pie meal’ where the pie comes with two side dishes because then you won’t be able to have the dessert pies without having your stomach pumped. Of course you can just sit there and have a glass of wine or two to digest. And they even have decent coffee, too. Yes, I have spent way too long for a nice lunch there. I am hungry again wriring this review. What an awesome place.
