Flipside\Mrs Brown 4pm Flipside is one of Perth’s iconic burger chains that is a model for consistently good food, if you like burgers. It also has a unique affinity with bars nearby ie Mrs Brown — they are owned by the same people. The North Freo outlet is celebrating its 10th year of serving superb, inventive burgers and has not missed a beat. Three other outlets scattered around Perth are all hitting their straps early in 2016. As a frequenter of Mrs Brown we almost always have a Flipside burger delivered to us as we sink a frosty Prosecco or Pale Ale. The burgers are always well presented, tasty and cater to all tastes, including gluten free options and bun free options if you wish. Any of them are well worth a visit.

Used to be my favourite place for a burger but undercooked chicken & the high price whittled away my interest. Their restaurant is small but the right atmosphere. Their service was usually good & their variety is on the low end. Returned recently for their chips. Big and filling. Wish they did take away home made sauces :)

Having already tried Grill’d and Jus Burgers, we decided to give Flipside a try one Friday afternoon. The burgers were nice, and obviously more«homemade» style than Grill’d, which is like an upmarket McDonalds. The staff were pleasant enough, and although there is limited seating, we were lucky enough to get one of the two outside tables. Keep in mind that one regular chips is equal to two of the small chips, so it’s better value to get a regular to share rather than two separate serves. We found two regular chips amongst three of us to be plenty! You can also order burgers and chips to be eaten in the bar next door(Mrs Brown Bar), although I think a big burger like that would be too messy to eat as a bar snack. I read somewhere that they only accept cash payments and not cards, but that wasn’t the case and I had to problems paying with my paypass Mastercard.

We found ourselves in Fremantle with only 30 min to spare before watching a friends band take to the stage at Mojo’s. Thankfully Flipside came to our rescue right next door. We ordered a few different burgers, all delicious(The chicken chilli-ander is my fave) with some yummy chips & aoli. Food came out fast, it was fresh and yummy & the staff were very friendly. Love it!

Went here after the great Unilocal reviews, but was deeply disappointed. Ok, so it is one of the very few places to eat out in North Freo, but really… Burgers were average(had much better at Missy Moo’s in South Freo), service is chaotic(our order came a long time after people behind us in the queue got theirs), music is way too loud and it does not invite to eat in. I had the Triple B Chicken burger, and felt sick for the rest of the evening. I would rather have a microwave meal…

Red Hot chilli jam– keeps me coming bak. Knock it back with a few cold ones next door and you have already had an awesome night!

The atmosphere on Saturday night was lively! I ordered the Kenny Burger — great veggie pattie with an amazing relish(although I could have done with some more mayo!). I did find the bun a bit overwhelming though — but I am not a fan of big buns: p They also had a good selection of organic drinks too! Service was switfy too. I’m not much or a gourmet burger fan but this was good!

Sure, I can see where some of the criticisms other reviewers have come up with regarding Flipside come from. But their above average use of the English language leads me to think they are not drunk. It seems unfair to review this place in any other state; when I’ve been here in the past, it’s been in the midst of a heavy night at Mojo’s, Mrs. Brown, the Swan Basement or the Railway Hotel and in that context, Flipside truly shines as the best food option in North Fremantle. That’s not to say that the burgers are bad, because they’re not and I’d happily eat them sober. It’s just never been my experience that I’m in this area at times of sobriety. I rarely dine in as I’m usually in a hurry to get back to wherever else I’ve been — it usually takes about 15 minutes for orders to be made, which can be a long time if you’re waiting to see a band. That said, it looks like it would be a fairly comfortable joint to eat-in at. A welcome addition to the North Freo strip.

Flipside is an absolute favourite of mine — you really can’t go wrong with any of the burgers on their menu, but I usually stick with the Classic plus cheese. Or if I’m not too hungry, the Mini Flip is the half-size equivalent. If you don’t fancy beef, there’s a tasty selection of free range chicken burgers on offer, including the delicious Taxi C.A.B. and the indulgent Triple B with brie cheese and whole cranberry sauce. For those who need a gluten-free option, you’ll be happy to know that Flipside offer a gluten free bun, plus their tasty hand cut chips are gluten free already! They have a nice selection of fancy fizzy drinks, or if your keen for a beer or glass of wine, you can take your burger with you and find a seat next door at the bar(Mrs Browns).

Hmmmm, a friend and I ordered a burger here last night — the Garden Party which was a spiced chickpea and sweet potato patty with salad, beetroot, relish and cheese. Sounded like a win but the reality was fairly sub-par. A really unmanageable burger with a squishy patty that kept falling out of the bun with all the other ingredients. Got to hate that. Couldn’t taste the cheese either. I know I sound like a total whinger here, but I’m just telling like it is. We also ordered the hand cut chips which were good(although if I have to say something and I will: a little too salty), plus an aioli dipping sauce. That was decent. We ate the meal over a drink at Mrs Browns next door which was awesome. Just a shame the burger didn’t wow us.

Flipside was one of my first meals during my visit home to Perth. I’ve eaten burgers in various places in the US and was interested to see another Unilocaler critical of something I had been craving for years — a good olé crusty, slightly toasted bun such as Flipside provides. One of the burger preferences of US foodies — the very soft bun — is something that I never really enjoyed too much, and the«crunch factor» at Flipside was just what I was looking for. I always associate soft burgers with low-end fast food and crusty ones with the gourmet end of things. A cursory glance at my reviews of burger places throughout Vegas and SoCal will reveal much whining about soggy buns on a regular basis. Given that Flipside is probably catering to the former denizens of the now-defunct Van Eileen’s(whose burgers were LITERALLY served between two slices of toast in the very old days, and on extremely crusty buns in the latter), I would suggest that they have made the correct business decision. Still, with all the other options, perhaps Tip Top sesame seed buns or even something slightly snazzy like a soft potato bun might be included for the soft burger set at a later date. I am all for more options for all. There are quite a few options here, reasonably priced for Perth, and even a couple of vegetarian choices — nice to see Perth getting with the times there, as well. I really appreciated the interesting decision to combine both cooked and raw red onion on my burger, which was seared to perfection and so juicy that my mate and I decided to munch our meals down on the grass across the street so the drippings would have somewhere to go other than all over our clothes. My only real complaint about Flipside is that they don’t take credit cards or EFTPOS; however, they are quick to point you to the ATM in the slightly dingy bar next door. The place is also a little trendy and the crowds can be considerable at peak times,

This original Flipside burger bar, was my first forage in the world of gourmet burgers. After reading a pretty positive review in the paper in 2006, my sister and I made the expedition(by train, this was before I had my license) from Mt Lawley(literally forage). Pretty keen we were. To our great disappointment however, the shop was CLOSED, noooo!!! And we managed to make the same mistake of visiting Flipside outside of business hours once again. Doh! They’re only open for lunch Thursday through Sundays, take note! When we finally tried the Flipside burgers, we agreed it was worth the sweat. My favourite is The Kenny Burger; Spicy chickpea and sweet potato with a kick of coriander and chilli jam — mmm! They lost points on the bun however; they only do white bread and I like the wholesome taste of brown. On the positive side, the burgers were generous and not too greasy. With the plethora of gourmet burger joints around nowadays though, Flipside is comparatively so-so. Of course with better options much closer to home, Flipside Freo has not been revisited in some time. Nevertheless, I can testify they know to make a mean chip and dip.

It’s easy to like Flipside, the convenient North Fremantle location has a minimal and trendy fit out and caters for both the burger boffin and those just looking for a tasty bite to eat. The upbeat atmosphere makes it a great place to dine in, alternately there is no shortage of locations around North Fremantle to take in the views of the harbour, river or beach. On the occasions that I have been there the place has been filled with patrons of all ages enjoying the gourmet burgers they have become known for both in Fremantle and Perth. The burgers on offer have been given some thought and I appreciate the time it takes to grill a patty to perfection so the 5 to 10 minute wait didn’t worry me so much. Having consumed burgers on an international level I fancy myself as somewhat of an expert, or at the very least I know what I like. I like the idea behind the flipside burger and I really want to love it but the buns they use are too hard on the exterior. If they lost the crunch factor and upped the comfort element by introducing a pillowy soft bun I would be consuming many more of these culinary treats.

Burger burger burger. We all love burgers and for all those girls whose boyfriends love burgers… we all love chips. For all those veggies whose friends love burgers, well we all love chickpea and sweet potato burgers. Flipside burgers has two outlets in Perth(the other one is in Wembley), but this one in Fremantle makes a special gesture to all those burger lovers who also love a pint and some live music. You can order your burger and proceed to sit in Mojos bar next door and ease the tease of the mouth watering burger with a drink. Your burger will be brought to you by beautiful food elves right to your seat at the bar. Menu-wise you can’t go wrong. An appetising board of chicken, beef and vegetarian burgers includes but is not limited to; Red Hot chilli beef, BBQ bacon and cheese, Pear and Parmesan Chicken and Spicy Chickpea and Sweetpotato. If you’re in the mood for a burger, go ‘Flipside’.
