Smokey’s All American BBQ

As much as I hate to, Smokey’s only gets 2 stars from me. There’s nothing All American about the food. I have had a lot of great BBQ, mostly American, but some from other regions around the world. The food I have ordered has tasted like it’s reheated in the microwave. Nothing special. There are so many wonderful restaurants in Melbourne to waste you money, or my words on mediocre food.

Great BBQ pork, meat fell off the bone. Pretty close to North American BBQ. Atmosphere a little sterile but worth a try. Stars are for the BBQ meat.

I stopped in for lunch last week as I was walking by. I have been craving some good ol’ American food since I’ve been in Melbourne. This place is not it. I ordered the ribs which were extremely expensive. I was expecting a slab of ribs which consist of a cut that has 12 – 13 bones and mostly baby back. I don’t know what cut they serve. Although they were very tender and fell off the bone, I cannot get over the amount of fat that was on them and the lack of flavour. On the upside, I do like the décor in the place.

Smokey’s All American BBQ is good option for BBQ in Prahran. A solid 3 to 3.5 stars. Kudos to the owners as they did nice job with the décor, it really does feel like an American bbq shack, complete with collegiate flags on the walls. I spied a Kansas Jayhawk banner… not something you see everyday in Melbourne. However, to be a true American joint, they need to broadcast American games on TV.
Portions are large as are the equally high prices. I ordered the Carolina which came with 3 pulled pork sliders and a side of shoestring fries. While not exactly the same BBQ you’d find in the southern parts of the US, I thought it was rather tasty. The pork was slow cooked and smokey.
I wish they had lunch specials as I couldn’t justify spending over $ 30 for ribs at lunch, so I opted for the sliders. I’ll go back… they certainly tempt you with buckets of coors light on offer. There is also a location in Port Melbourne.

Just not good. I feel for the staff who will soon be out of work because the food does not taste like BBQ. French dip was made with Asian frozen stir fry meat.
