Food was not bad, decent sized portions. Service wasn’t good at all, and the waitress took my plate away before I had even finished(I hadn’t pushed my knife and fork together and there was still food on the plate) and she didn’t ask — very annoying, should be a basic skill for a waitron!

Ordered a 300g rump and asked for it to be done blue. Came out medium… For $ 21 I kind of expected more… for example to actually be done blue. The accompanying salad was very fresh though, and the portion of chips, generous. All in all I expected better from a dish costing $ 21, given it’s just a matter of handiwork; I’m not asking for a massive improvement of ingredients.

Function room the attic is huge and great for private events.

Great vibe and location. Looks recently renovated. I quite like the downstairs area. It has some funky chairs and a bar area and a TV. Great for chilling with a small group of friends. They have specials everyday though I didn’t get to try them while I was there. Will definitely be visiting here more often.

When I heard we were going to meet at Mr Tipply’s for the Unilocal Sydney Christmas Party, I was kind of excited — I’ve been to Mrs Sippy’s in Double Bay and I assumed this was a CBD version of the cool laid-back cocktail bar. So I was admittedly a bit disappointed to find that it was just The City Hotel with a rebrand and a lick of paint. Sydney’s Unilocalers gathered upstairs in the function room — which has been improved since The City Hotel days with new seating and a better lay out it, so it looked a whole lot better — but it still suffered from having no rest rooms or smoking area(both downstairs) and a small bar. The beer was a fairly standard selection and reasonably-priced, the staff were friendly — and food-wise we had edamame and garlic-french-fries(which sound dodgy but were insanely good). The conversation was good but people drifted downstairs after a while as some wanted to smoke — there was a lot of free champagne for those who stayed. So what do I think of Mr Tipply’s? I guess it’s better than the City Hotel was — the interior decoration looks more current — but the layout is largely the same, big open spaces, not at all cosy. If you’re a smoker it has one of the largest smoking areas in the CBD. I didn’t hate it — and if it was right next to where I worked then I would definitely pop in for the odd drink or two — but I didn’t LOVEIT — and given the choice of slick bars in the CBD it hasn’t really done enough to make me travel to go back.

This was stop 3 on our Unilocal bar crawl. We hit here about 8pm on a Wednesday night and even though it was $ 5 rum night the place was basically empty. You could have fired a canon in the place and not hurt anyone. Now Wednesday isn’t the busiest of nights so I wanted to come back another time to see if it was any livelier. This Friday, a group of us from work headed there at knock off time and the result — dead as a doornail. Crickets chirping and tumble-weeds blowing past. I don’t really know why the place is so dead. It looks good. The selection of beers is… ok. Its all faux craft beers(Fat Yak etc) but way better than the usual VB and New. The mixed drinks look good. The garlic fries are awesome. The rest of the menu looks really tasty. It did start to fill up a little by 7ish but even then it wasn’t exactly what you would call busy and there was simply no life in the place at all. There was a house band but in the absence of any other atmosphere, all they did was make the place too noisy to have a conversation. We ended up bailing for somewhere quieter. I don’t know what they are doing wrong. The place has all the right ingredients but there is just no vibe here at all. I’m not sure whether they just haven’t been open very long and haven’t been discovered yet(unlikely given the location) or whether everyone is heading for the really trendy small bars instead. I suspect that’s the problem. This isn’t a small bar. They have tried to make the place into a small bar but its really just an upmarket city hotel with a nice paint job. Still, if you want somewhere where you know you can get in and just want to sit down and have a chat, this is your place(avoid the Friday band though).

Came here for a quiet one on a Thursday night and I do love what they have done to the old City Hotel. They have opened up the place by moving the pokies downstairs and installed booths along the wall. I must say the workers here all looked the part; smart, sexy, and stylish. They have the usual beers here and a large wine list that they sell by the glass. Grabbed a booth and ordered two Fat Yaks and a side of fries cooked in garlic. The chips were so delicious, perfectly seasoned and there were slices of fried garlic mixed into the chips. First time that I didn’t ask for sauce, I just didn’t need it. Definitely will be back to try the mains here and will probably end up being a regular because they have table service… yay!!!
