The waterside studios of ATYP(Australian Theatre for Young People) are a great venue to see and/or rehearse and stage some fantastic theatrical productions. Sharing the same warf as Sydney Dance Company and Sydney Theatre Company, performers at ATYP tread the same boards as some of Australia’s greatest performers. Indeed, ATYP is a fantastic place to not only see fresh and occasionally gutsy independent theatre, but is a great place to catch talented actors in their early years, before they walk STC’s boards down the hall. The warehouse style space of Studio 1 is adaptable, but it takes a great designer to work around this space’s potentially poor(read awful) sightlines, as the space is burdened with two to three thick pillars in the centre of the room. This means that watching a show at ATYP can be excrutiatingly frustrating if the set design hasn’t dealt with the space accordingly and that you may well miss out on half of the show that happens to be set behind the obtrusive pillar. However, if the show’s designer has allowed for these hindrances, then they can in fact contribute towards an interesting performance space(as in Cry Havoc’s Oct/Nov 2011 production of Titus Andronicus). Studio 2 is commonly used as a rehearsal space and hosts many of the workshops that ATYP runs for young adults, secondary school, primary and pre-school students.
