This place is way overrated ! It’s more of a 3 star place than a 4 star. We were recommended to come to this place by someone on ipanema beach. Service was mediocre but judging by service elsewhere in rio I am not surprised. We drove to this place for the platos Fuertes which are full meals only to be told that they changed the menu and all they had was the apps and tacos, burritos, and what not. Complete dissapointment unless that’s your thing then your good. When we told them we would not be eating service went from Barely there to non existent basically making sure we just pay our bill, And then they had no change to break $ 100 reais? Really what kind of business you running ?? Asked if we could pay by credit given we probably would have, but by this time something was not sitting well and they said they would come Back with change 10 – 15 later finally change arrived. Great ambiance probably the only thing it’s got going for this place. Settled for a burger next door thank god it was our saving grace to wanting a satiating meal. Count on beef to do the job !

We eat La Calaca so regularly they must know is by now. More often than not we order delivery when we’ve come back from late night traveling. But since we have guest in town we needed to take them to the restaurant to experience it in full. I was surprised and a little disappointed to see the beautiful mural that was painted on the wall had been painted over! I hope they commission a new street artist to do the wall. This time I had the pork tacos since I love the slices of pineapple they put on it. It comes served on a metal taco holder which helps retain the heat. My favorite by far is the chicken burrito which has a cool combination of guacamole, corn, and even nacho chips. Drinks here are pretty awesome too. We tried the graviola and strawberry blended margaritas which were both delicious. If you’re looking for non-alcoholic, I recommend the San Francisco. It has an awesome name but also a refreshing mix of juices. Service here has always been polite and is the best Mexican food in Leblon!

Super reliable Mexican. They just brought in a chef from Mexico and the specialties are tacos, burritos and other fast casual items. My favorite from this new menu is the chicken burrito and the potato wedges are a nice starter to share. Go for the skinny margarita, I love it because they use fresh lime versus sour mix. Great spot for a quick lunch. They’re also open late night later in the week.

Gostei bastante. Bom atendimento, comida bem temperada e preço justo. Aprovado!

This is a small restaurant of the Mexican cuisine — almost completely devoid of anything Brazilian. Was there on a rainy Saturday night — because there was room to sit. In fact, only 3 tables. Everywhere else in the area was packed. Had a few drinks and a few tacos. Drinks were good, tacos were ok. Service was bad considering I was one of the only persons there.

MARAVILHOSO! Simplesmente uma delícia! Música ambiente, arte, comida de morrer e atendimento excelente! Comi ceviche e camarões a ajillo… Super atencioso e talentoso!

Delicious food, great atmosphere and servers are really nice. I do approve of this mexican food(for being located in Brazil). I am part mexican and had trouble finding flavorful food in Rio after living there for one year. I went twice. Always for Taco Tuesday. The first time was better than the second, The tacos are flavorful but tiny and the first time they used real tortilla de maiz but the second time they used flour tortilla which isn’t how tacos are made but we did show up late the second time around so maybe they ran out ? Suggestions for chef. DONOT put vinegar in Salsa fresca, That is not how we Mexicans make Salsa fresca… just use, cilantro, red onion, tomato, little bit of serrano peppers and lime juice Also, horchata needs to be well mixed before serving. When it came to my table the rice and sugar was at the bottom and the water was on top… mix the drink so we get all the flavor in each sip. Thanks.

I have been searching for good Mexican food essentially since the day I arrived in Rio. Nine months later, and I’ve found it! Ok, maybe it’s not what you’re going to find in California, Nevada, Texas, etc., but as far as Rio de Janeiro goes, this is the best Mexican food I have found. I ordered the chicken fajitas, and they were pretty good. I came with some friends, and they ordered various drinks which were all delicious. I think some parts of good Mexican food will just always be lacking here in Rio. For example, the guacamole is made with the big avocados found here, which are excitingly as big as your head, but not as excitingly are also less flavorful and more watery than the hass avocados which are normally used to make guacamole. Also, here in Brazil, it is actually impossible to find sour cream. These things said, La Calaca made a valiant effort to provide good Mexican food, and the price isn’t nearly as high as I expected(expect to pay around R$ 50 – 70 per person including a drink or two). I should also note that the grande churros are amazing! It’s a plateful of churros drizzled in doce de leite, whipped cream, and ice cream!

Call us loco, but we’re on this never-ending search for delicious Mexican food beyond the borders of North America. Sounds silly, we know. But we travel the world quite frequently and sometimes our trips run a little long so a Mexi-fix just seems necessary. Margaritas; salty tortilla chips; spice; flakey, fried entrees — this is the stuff we love. We visited La Calaca on our fifth day in Rio. We thought we’d read that it was owned by someone from California, so that seemed promising. I must admit that the margaritas were smooth and the staff was kind and made their best efforts to speak English as our Portuguese isn’t so great. Unfortunately, however, the food wasn’t so great either. It just seemed to be missing a little something — authenticity was lacking. With that said, I do realize that if I’d never been to Mexico, or wasn’t from Arizona, this review might have received a four… While we may stop in for their buy one, get one happy hour drink specials, we’ll skip eating here next time we visit. We won’t, however, ever stop searching for amazing Mexican food.

Gostei e vou voltar!

The first time I went it was a four and the second time it was a two. I ordered the same thing – fish tacos – both times(the second time they came out of the kitchen cold). La Calaca is one of the few restaurants in Rio that seems to understand what Mexican food really is. The corn tortillas are legit, and the salsa is spicy. They just need a little more quality control. Food should never come out of the kitchen cold, much less at the price they’re charging. And the remedy should be something a little more earnest than sticking the plate in the microwave.

Really delicious, fun and funky! I love that they have small plates(antojitos) so I could snack and try a bit of everything they have to offer. My favorites: papas bravas, flautas, meatballs, and you can’t go wrong with their tacos! And their churros. I would and COULD seriously eat them for dessert every day. They even have a great happy hour where I get to enjoy their buy one get one free offer for drinks. They have it M-F 4−8pm! Their white sangria and Chilcanita cocktail were my favorites!

Truly authentic Mexican cuisine. They do have menu in English as well so if you don’t understand Portuguese do ask for it. Because we are vegetarian at first they weren’t sure what could be prepared without meat but didn’t take them long to figure out. They made the fajita veggie along with a bunch of other stuff. The Brazilian caipirinha with orange and ginger specially is Amazing! Good service but poor English. Their is just one lady who works their who knows good English and she helped us choose vegetarian food. We went twice in our 4 day stay. Definitely try it out if you like Mexican food.

Last night we ate at La Calaca as a part of the American Society of Rio de Janeiro’s November Happy Hour. The restaurant offers a large assortment of Happy Hour specials which normally run until 8pm. We found food tasty and tasteful, attractively prepared served with delicious accompaniments. We did find that the service was a little slow, but that can be attributed to the large Thursday night crowd and reported staff illnesses… All in all I would recommend this restaurant to those of you who appreciate Mexican cuisine.

Good tacos however the meat was a bit dry. The empanadas had short rib inside and were flavorful. This was a great place to stop and we caught happy hour so drinks were 2 for 1. We had the Painkillers and it was good only thing missing was a bit of nutmeg.

Went twice while in Rio. Each time the food was extremely delicious. It is well plated and tastes wonderful. For Mexican style food, the spice was a bit soft(if you’re into spicy that is). The chips were great, tacos were delicious and well priced, and their executive lunch special includes a tasty dessert of your choice. Definitely recommend checking them out if you’re looking for something to have in this area. Doubly so if you’re looking for Mexican style cuisine in Rio.
