This was recommended by my hotel for dinner when I could not get a table at DOM or other famed places. I was lukewarm about the idea, since it was presented to me as a beef place, and I was just in Buenos Aires where I was growing tired of meat-centric meals. However, it seemed there might be more to the place than meat so I opted to give it a go. When you take your seat you will soon have a plate of small dishes brought to your table. As others have mentioned, this is the optional«couvert», but you’d be mad to reject it. For one thing, it’s only R$ 27(US$ 8), and for another it’s extraordinary. I’m not sure if it is always the same, but for me it consisted of some delicious olives, a salad of tomatoes in olive oil with a few bocconcini, a salad of thin slices of zucchini with what may have been cheese on top, and a delectable salad of marinated fish and vegetables. This was accompanied by some cheese bread, followed by a warm-from-the-oven bread roll. The menu – which they are in no hurry to bring, giving you time to enjoy a drink and nibble on the couvert – is heavy on meat, though there are options for chicken and vegetarian dishes. I opted for the picanha summum, not really sure what it would be. What it turned out to be was one of the best steaks of my life(and this from someone who used to dine regularly at Peter Luger in Brooklyn). The flavour was amazingly deep and rich, and the sauces that came with it(a chimichurri and a spicy sauce) only served to enhance it. The only orher things on the plate were a lone potato and a wedge of lettuce with a russian dressing, neither of which I bothered much with. This was a real treat, and while it was the most expensive meal of my trip to South America(so far) I don’t regret it at all.

In a very sleazy fashion, our bill arrived and they charged us for things we never ordered, they also charged us for bread and tap water. The overcharges added up to about US$ 100(R$ 400). All this because we were not Brazilian. Watch out for your bill, they are disgustingly crooked, and in most countries that would be illegal.

What a refreshing break from the rest of São Paulo. We got here around 9pm on a week night without a reservation. Ordered some drinks and waiting about 45 min to be seated under the tree. Good was good, atmosphere was great. Hostess spoke some English.

We had a special event here.. So we got some amazing apps to snack on, really good. We then sat down and got those absolutely delicious cheese balls which seem to be a staple in the Brazilian diet :). But these are the best examples I have had to date. Next we had a salad which was OK and more cheese, buns :). Then we had steaks, not bad but not earth shattering either. Dessert were ok but I find Brazilian desserts so so. Very sweet, crème brûlée like stuff…

The restaurant with the fig tree is the restaurant you might hear of before your arrival in São Paulo. It’s also the restaurant your hotel concierge might recommend. These two things are no coincidence and both were true in my case. Before arriving I’d read that a couvert(appetizer) platter would arrive on my table. This is something I will not have ordered but will be expected to pay for. I had no problem with such a concept but when that luscious platter was cleared and a duplicate platter arrived my concern began to grow. Would I now have to pay for a second platter? As I made my way through the second couvert plate I tried to get an answer to that question but the language barrier made that impossible. It wasn’t until the third couvert platter was laid on my table that I knew for certain: I MUST know whether I’m paying for each platter individually. Somehow, some way, I eventually obtained a satisfactory answer to that question and my son and I dug into platter #3 with gusto. You pay only once for the couvert — a flat per person charge of R$ 27 per person(under $ 10US apiece) — and can eat as much of it as you want. I like this couvert thing. The couvert was just the start of a beautiful experience. There’s that gorgeous fig tree with its sprawling limbs providing a lovely ambiance, the glow of low lighting bathing everything in golden hues, and then there’s the fabulous food and wine. The hotel concierge had confided that she liked their seafood, despite it being an Argentinian restaurant known for its meats. That enticed me to order a post-couvert starter of fresh grilled Portuguese sardines(R$ 49) and my son to opt for an Amazon Pirarucu(a Brazilian Sweet Water fish, R$ 120). There was nothing not to enjoy there but I crushed hardest on my Brangus Breed Ribeye with Soufflé Potatoes(R$ 118). Two fabulous sauces, a chimichurri and a red pepper sauce, accompanied the beef. I don’t often order a big piece of meat but I was smart to do so here. It was perfect. For the best possible experience at Figueira Rubaiyat I’d recommend you sit beneath the tree itself(it’s a very big restaurant), enjoy the couvert for all its worth, order up a lovely piece of meat, and accompany the whole thing with some fine Argentinian wine. They feature«Tropical Breed» Kobe Beef but I had zero complaints about their less expensive Brangus Breed beef. Your concierge really does want you to be satisfied and I doubt your experience here will be anything but. (For the BRL challenged, this dinner for two with a bottle of Argentinian wine, tax, and tip ran R$ 489 which translated to $ 130.16; expensive for Brazil but completely reasonable relative to the prices of steak at purveyors in the US).

It was my first night in Sao Paulo/Brazil and decided to give Figueira Rubaiyat a shot from all the rave reviews. As you walk in you notice the large fig tree and its canopy over arching the entire restaurant, the ambience is very magical. After a short period they brought out some appetizers even though we had not requested them. We thought it was a nice gesture from the restaurant. Having barely finished the plate, they brought out another. Again barely finished and a 3rd of the same appetizer was brought out. Not thinking much of it and just poking at the last one we ordered our food, a steak dish and an assortment of seafood with rice. The steak was good but nothing to truly remember. The seafood was prepared very well and was really fresh, it was the highlight of the foods we had. Once the bill arrived I noticed the charge for every single appetizer was included, needless to say I didn’t make a fuss as we did naively eat them. The restaurant was expensive and did not give the good feeling of satisfaction when it comes to the price/quality.

Service was OK but the food was really good. Definitely not the best steakhouse I’ve ever been to, but would go back if I’m in town again. I wore a tie here because reviews said it was dressy, but I saw people in shorts and jeans so really it’s not that formal. The fig tree is cool and gives the restaurant a unique feel, but sometimes leaves fall so make sure you’re covered. They also have little fire boxes in front at night, which are a nice touch, but our table was right by one and I got a light dusting of ash — I love camping so it didn’t bother me too much. What did bother me was the children who thought it was the coolest thing ever and kept throwing rocks and leaves into the fire, causing more ashes to fly out. What bothered me more was that the parents and waitstaff didn’t do anything to get them to stop. Drinks were good, except they don’t know what a dirty martini is. Dry martini is on there, but I had to walk them through how to make a dirty one. The steak was excellent, but a bit small for the price. We also ordered veggies on the side and there really wasn’t that much to eat. Probably a bit overpriced, but a solid bet for a date or night out. Just be careful if you see kids next to the fire boxes.

Beautiful open air restaurant with a huge old tree growing in the middle of the dining room. Great steaks, cocktails, and a huge dessert selection. Service was also very good. But my favorite thing about this place was the Saturday feijoada buffet. Unbelievable!!! Huge selection of all different cuts of pork and sausages. I’m no feijoada expert, but this was easily the best feijoada I’ve ever had. Looking forward to my return one day.

Great service and amazing food. This is a steakhouse and I just popped in to checkout the fig tree but after a few drinks decided to try out their menu. The one thing I didn’t like was how my server force an appetizer(temptation) on me. I didn’t really care for the stuff in the appetizer because it’s mostly cheese stuff(I don’t like cheese) and salad At the end of the night the manager did offer to give me a credit but I declined. Anyways, I got the sea bass and the side dish of cassava and eggs and boy was that amazing. Fish was roasted perfectly and the cassava-egg combo was one of my fav things in Brazil so far. The ambience is great. The fig tree is the star of the place. It’s open air so the noise level isn’t so bad even when crowded.

I do not have enough good things to say about this restaurant. Seriously, this was probably one of the top 5 meals of my life and luckily for me, it just happened to be on my birthday. From the moment you walk in, this place is just magical. There are a million tables around this gigantic tree in the front of the restaurant. It’s gorgeous. Everything about the setting is just gorgeous. We walk up to the host stand and she lets us know that it’ll be about 20 minutes. We decided to head over to the bar to enjoy a glass of red before dinner. The bar service was impeccable, they brought us small appetizers and things to munch on while we waited for our table. Soon enough our table was ready and we walked over. My friend decides on the seafood risotto and I decide on the ribeye. They kept bringing us things to munch on so we did just that but when our food finally arrived, we were literally in food heaven. I couldn’t believe how GOOD this ribeye was. It was unbelievable! My friend loved her seafood risotto as well. We proved this by eating everything on our plates and that is a rare thing for me to do. At the end of our meal, they sang happy birthday to me and brought out pastries for both my friend and I, which was very sweet. If you are in Sao Paulo, you NEED to come here. Yes, it’s a bit expensive, but I promise it is worth every penny. This was the highlight of my time in Sao Paulo and it’s because everything was perfect. The venue, the service, and the food were all at the top of its game.

One of my favorite restaurants in São Paulo. The setting is beautiful, with a large outdoor seating area under a huge fig tree. Food quality is very high, excellent service, and extensive wine list. Menu includes all different types of meats, but also has a great selection of exotic fish and shell fish dishes. They always have a couple of Amazon river fish which are always a treat and not easy to find in other restaurants. Before dining, I recommend a Caipirinha made with my favorite Cachaça: Germana, from Minas Gerais. This appetitive will set the mood for a nice dining experience.

My husband and I went here last week for my birthday. I had read mixed reviews online — people either seemed to love it or think it was very overrated — so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Well, from our experience, I say believe the hype! We came on a Sunday night at 7:30, so the concerns about noise, slow service, and large crowds some others expressed in their reviews were not a problem. 7:30 is early by Brazilian standards, and Sunday tends to be a night that Brazilians eat at home with their families, so we have found we get wonderful service when we go out on Sundays. The atmosphere is lovely — the giant, 100+ year old fig tree being the main attraction. We ate in the front part, which is actually outside, but covered. It was a little chilly, but there are heat lamps waiters will bring over if you ask. I wouldn’t wear jeans here, but you don’t have to get super fancy. I wore a dress and my husband wore nice pants and a button down shirt.(FYI, they do offer menus in English if you ask). After we sat down, we were presented with the«couvert»(coverage charge) — non-Brazilians, be aware that this is not free. It is a very common practice for restaurants here to bring a starter — typically a bread basket with different dips — for a per person fee. You always have the choice of refusing it, but sometimes the waiter will not ask whether you want it or not, as was the case here. I can see how it would be confusing for Americans, since the bread basket is almost always free in the U.S., and the waiter would never bring an appetizer you didn’t order. The couvert here is pricier than other places I’ve been, but it’s also delicious and goes above and beyond the typical bread with sides. Ours had slices of chorizo, olives, cucumbers with shaved parmesan, fresh tomatoes with buffalo mozzarella, and salmon ceviche — plus fresh bread and pao de queijo(bread with cheese melted in the middle of it). The wine menu is quite impressive — it goes on for pages, but the by-the-glass selection is limited. However, they do have half bottles, which was nice since my husband and I don’t drink a lot. We ordered a half bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from my favorite Argentine winery — Dona Paula. I was happy to learn it was as good as the Malbec I’ve had from that winery previously. I ordered the Picanha Summus as my entrée, and it was one of the best pieces of meat I’ve ever had in my life. Tender, juicy, and melt in your mouth delicious! I think I embarrassed my husband by making«nom nom» noises. It actually comes with two large pieces of meat, so I took the second one home and had it for lunch the next day. And it was just as good! It came with a baked potato and romaine hearts with a balsamic drizzle, which were both tasty, but the steak was definitely the star of the show. We ordered a side of grilled vegetables, which were surprisingly good. Typically this side dish is pretty uninspired, but here it includes asparagus, pumpkin, eggplant, squash, cauliflower and green beans, all perfectly grilled. For dessert we shared the Chocolate Nemesis, the most delicious foe I’ve ever faced! A very rich, flourless chocolate cake, it’s served with vanilla ice cream and strawberries and is more than enough for two people. Throughout the night, the service was efficient, if not overly friendly. The one thing I was surprised about is that the sommelier didn’t come over to refill our wine glasses. This is standard practice in nicer restaurants in the U.S. However, to be honest, I’m not sure if it’s typical here, because I don’t drink wine all that often. Our bill was around R$ 400(about $ 180), which is pricey, but not much more than what we’ve paid at other nice restaurants in Sao Paulo(or DC, for that matter). I definitely felt like it was worth it.

Very good restaurant belonging to the Rubaiyat family that offers great quality steaks and seafood. Meal experience begins with a complimentary house starter that includes a salmon ceviche, tomato-mozzarella salad, olives and Spanish chorizo. Superb quality for a «free» sampler! As most Brazilian restaurants, cheesy bread was offered too. We ordered two starters: Grilled heart of palm and Rubaiyat Salad. The heart of palms were very original, however the grill flavor overpowered the flavor of the heart of palm. The Rubaiyat salad was nothing special. For main we ordered steaks, paella and salmon. The steaks(Rib-eye) were of very good quality, they offer a variety of qualities including Wagyu and Kobe. The fish was also very good quality and had great taste. The paella was just ok, the rice wasn’t at its best. Overall, food quality is very good. However there is still to improve to earn a 5 star score. Price is within a high range, there is no free wifi, restaurant is spacious, smart casual, with a very pleasant terrace and a beautiful(and humongous) old fig tree offers a cool shade day long!

Amazing experience. The venue itself is quite large yet somehow it still feels intimate. The huge fig tree makes quite an impression when you walk in and it’s canopy covers the entire restaurant. Being in Brazil I feel the need to make the most of the amazing meat options this country has to offer and la figueria surely does deliver. Whilst it’s not the cheapest place around the quality, ambiance and service create an excellent experience. My steak was cooked to perfection and the waiters were very helpful to ensure we got what we needed promptly. All steak dishes come with sides, a selection of sauces and of course the brazilian flour. The cocktails were also delicious of note the berry caipirinha. If you have room at the end of your meal you can opt for a desert buffet. We had filled up on the amazing bread and starters but managed to fit in some banana and dulce de leiche ice cream which was Devine. Great spot for a date, large group or business dinner. Definitely worthwhile.

I’m really into Figueira. It’s a very nice restaurant with great food, and it is an amazing place to take visitors. As mentioned, the ambiance is great. There is a phenomenal tree that the restaurant was built around. It is a large area with lots of seats. If there is a wait to sit, don’t fret, you can go to the bar next door(attached) and grab a cocktail and appetizer. I’m a huge fan of the bolinhos de bacalhau(salted cod balls deep fried). If you don’t speak Portuguese and aren’t with anyone who does, you can ask for a menu in English. Take your time going over it, because there is a lot to choose from! Your waiter will come around and offer you a large spread of appetizers. Tapenades, cheese, etc. It is very large. It’s nice if you are with a large group, but if it is only a couple of you, it can fill you up, so be careful. Also, if you accept it, you pay for it. Remember, you don’t HAVE to take it. My husband and I usually pass when it is just the two of us. One of my absolute favorite salads here is the arugula salad with the pan roasted palm heart. It comes out looking almost like a fish, but it is a perfectly cooked palm heart. The servings are large. This last trip, my husband and I split both the salad and the entrée, so the photos will reflect half portions. For the main course, we got a pan cooked bacalhau that comes with some veggies on the side, and ordered an extra side of broccoli rice. The food was perfect and the staff was pleasant. I always have a great night when I come here.
