Ok, I’m not exactly sure what happened but one minute I bought a fastalavn bølle, and the next minute it was heaven in my mouth. Seriously, it was like eating a cloud. If the rest of the food that comes out of this place is even half as good, then I’m their number one fan!!!

I got tipped about this café from a Japanese friend that this café is owned by a Japanese. Having the famous Japanese bakery Andersen in mind, I went to try out this café in Torvehallen. At a first glance, it seems there is some sort of Swedish connection. First, they have lussekatter — the saffran twisted buns that the Swedes eat during the advent weeks. Second, they have the famous Astrid Lindgren’s character Pippi Longstocking everywhere, including on their serving mugs. I didn’t really find out about the Swedish connection later, but we did try the lussekatter that my Swedish boyfriend approved. As for me, I wouldn’t know the difference between a bad lussekatter or a good lussekatter since I have only consumed this baked goods once or twice before. So, I guess the lussekatter is Swedish-approved, sort of. The warm chocolate that I ordered was also delightful. It was probably a little small for 40kr, but I could tell that they made it from scratch, as how it should be instead of just pushing buttons on some machines. I guess this place is a nice alternative to the more popular Granny House on the corner. As we were ready to leave, we saw the Japanese baker made some more of the lussekatter to put in the oven. At least I know that these things are truly homemade, and that’s the way it should be.

Café Rosa is by far my favourite bakery in Copenhagen. Maya, the owner, adds a real personal, quirky touch to the place. She labours for hours and hours to make the most perfect cakes in the whole of Scandinavia. My favourites include potato bread, carrot bread, cheese cake, carrot cake, fruit crumble and chocolate banana cake. If you are very lucky, you might be there on a day when Maya prepares her scrumptious vegeburgers; they are made from chickpeas, with a terryiaki sauce and encased in a freshly baked bun. I would never usually eat vegeburgers, but Maya provides the exception that proves the rule. She always has a new cake up her sleeve and loves to give a modern twist to Swedish and Danish classics. Maya singlehandedly bakes all her products on-site, unlike other local bakeries. I find myself wishing that there were more truly independent and unique businesses such as Café Rosa at Torvehallerne.

This place looks absolutely amazing, with flowery and lace décor as grandma would have loved. You can sit at the counter and eat amazing — AMAZING — cakes, or you can have one to go. I had came from lunch with a friend and fell in love with the whole Rosa’s feel when passing by. The owner(I guess it’s the owner) makes all the cakes on the spot so it can hardly get any fresher that this, and since the cakes looked great as well, my friend and I decided to go for a piece each. I had the raspberry tart and my friend picked out a coconut top. It. tasted. phenomenal. Raspberry tart FTW! It was a large piece, fresh and sweet and buttery and tasting much better than it looked. It was just perfect. The only downside is the rather grumpy looking lady behind the counter. She looks as if she can’t be bothered. It’s beyond me how you can look so outright dissatisfied surrounded by so much sweet, but what the heck — the cakes are still great. If I manage to crack a smile the time around, I might even consider raising with a star!

I could tell from twenty paces that this was my sort of place. After posing a few questions to the surprisingly surly woman behind the counter, I opted for the crumb-top apple pie. It tasted even better than it looked. Hearty, juicy apple slices, a solid bottom crust, and a sugary-but-not-too-sweet crumble top all fit together perfectly. This could easily become my favorite dessert place in the area.
