Here’s another one of those«I want to give five stars, but there’s just a little tiny something missing» reviews. 1656 has a great location in central Copenhagen(though it’s a little tricky to spot at first), in a side street to the infamous party area«Kødbyen». This being the more elegant place to check out if you want to take it down a notch from the lively meat packing district. Upon entering, my first impression is that it’s very dark in 1656. Though this might have been the case anywhere inside in the evenings in the actual year 1656… Black walls, black curtains hanging down from the ceiling and dark and velvety furniture. It takes a little while for the eye to adjust and to take in all of the eleganza that’s to be found. Comfortable seating is to be had either by the bar or in lounge chairs and sofas. The music is an ultra cool mix of chill electronica or more upbeat old school styles. The music that were played in the rest rooms were another story and sounded mostly like a woman having a veeeeeery good time. Enough said. The host(as they are called in 1656 cause it’s fancy and all) came with menus and water just after we had found a place to sit and was very helpful and efficient. I had a creamy and delicious drink called Better Than Bali, which was chosen because of the very cryptic«Ever been playing with the naughty thought of dipping waffles in ice cream? Thought so, this is it…» description in the menu. And it was served with a tiny waffle cracker on the side. Expensive and maybe a little too elegant for t-shirt wearing and beer loving me, I still really like 1656 and want to come back to try out the other drinks on the menu!

This place completely surprised me when I came to visit! It’s a speakeasy with nothing really outside except for a couple of candles. You are brought down the stairs to a classy lounge, with an even classier bar and cocktail selection. They really thought this concept through with interior, mood, and lighting. This is a great secret in Vesterbro, and a place to bring friends on a great night out!

What a great little cocktail bar, secretly nestled away in an inconspicuous side road in the Meatpacking District! Laid-back, elegant, a little bit secretive — this is a perfect place for after-dinner cocktails when coming out of one of the many popular restaurants in Vesterbro or Kødbyen. The style is very cozy, with dimmed lights, relaxed loungy background music, and soft armchairs and couches. I am a huge fan of the interior — all the furniture and decoration pieces have a vintage touch and most of them are one-of-a-kind, so you kinda get this mix-and-match feeling — but it all works out to form a really harmonic design. All in all, the place has an elegant, but still cool vibe — in the sense that it projects quality, but you won’t feel out of place if you’re wearing jeans. Their drinks are fabulous(did I really just use that word?. but it’s accurate!). On their menu, which changes seasonally, you’ll find classics like a Bellini, but also some signature drinks of their own creation. Two of my favorites included a «Past 8», with gin, pear, white chocolate and mint(dessert in a glass!), as well as a «Kentucky Milk», with almonds and cinnamon, which was so decadent and yummy. Staff is super friendly and will sit down with you to walk you through the menu and help you make a good choice. Most of their cocktails cost 110kr, which is in line with other high-end cocktail places in Copenhagen and really fair for the quality drinks you get. Absolutely no complaints at all — can’t wait to go here again!
