La Civette du Cours

Un bon endroit pour l’apéro sur le Cours Saleya: pas trop cher avec une mention pour les frites de maïs juste délicieuses et les frites de calamar. Tout cela n’est pas très diet mais est fait à la commande et donc frais.
On peut également dîner sur une carte de brasserie assez classique et les plats ont l’air copieux.

Un de mes incontournables pour aller boire un verre avant de sortir ou en fin de soirée. Le service est top et la carte est très complète.
De plus, contrairement aux autres bars et restaurant du Cours Saleya, la clientèle est essentiellement niçoise, preuve de l’authenticité de l’endroit ;)
J’ai testé aussi plusieurs fois le restaurant et tout est simple mais bon. Je vous conseille de goûter les frites au maïs en accompagnement, cela vous changera des frites habituelles.

I really should have read the reviews before I decided to done here. Sure, I knew it was going to be very touristy, but the wait staff were very friendly, so I thought «why the hell not»?
Big Mistake.
Food arrived 50 mins after we ordered. No other food was bought out to any other customer during this period. Which leaves me to believe the kitchen staff were on a break.
Our waitress was very apologetic which is the only reason for 2 stars. The food was defiantly worth the excessive wait.

Let’s cut to the Chase with this review.
Even the waiter suggested that the restaurant next door had better quality food than the business he was working in — but what can you expect with a tiny kitchen, huge bar and lack of quality food.
Now, I may seem a little pompous when it comes to having quality food but this was a tourist trap serving «French Cuisine» at marked up prices and crap quality and doesn’t serve as genuine and authentic French food.
We were meant to sit outside at Le Safari — but we wanted to sit outside and there were no tables left out in the beautiful April sun, so we opted for La Civette du Cours.
The location is wonderful on the corner, facing the markets — filled with provincial souvenirs, flowers, fruits and local produce. It’s a lovely location and from what I hear, in the later Spring and summer months, is filled with live music.
I was okay with the choice after reading the very simple menu. Hamburgers and Frittes (fries), traditional Salad nicoise and even a small selection of tapas, with a few good wines and a larger drink menu. It was simple and clean and I thought I was in for a good experience.
Sadly to say I was disappointed by everything but the wine and the server who spoke perfect English.
I went to the restroom to wash my hands and passed the large bar and entered the dirty restroom right next to the small and cluttered kitchen, by the time I had come out my father had ordered me a Boeff Tatare (Steak Tartare — a raw meat dish served with fries and a small salad) and for himself a Traditional Salad Nicoise. Paired with a Gewurtztraminer from Alsace, I’d have to say that it was probably the best part.
What seemed like «Lays» chips were served as a pre-​meal compliment with some water, and then we waited.
My Steak tartare was served like an uncooked beef patty and although it was a huge portion and looked like fairly good beef, the flavor was not there. You could taste the Worsterchire sauce the moment you put it in your mouth. Which speaks to me that the chef is trying to push the meaty flavour that the beef itself doesn’t release. I was disappointed, but with a drizzle of olive oil (courtesy to the table) and some fresh baguette it was ok.
My fathers «Nicoise» came without beans, no potato, no dressing and the smallest portion of what seemed to be canned tuna, possible. A sliced and flowered green onion lay across the plate and seemed to be nowhere near what a real nicoise would be.
Please if you are visiting France and want the true taste of France, I would not want you to be disappointed.
Le Petite Maison is said to be the best for eating in the area (however fairly pricey) but go next door, if you’re looking for French food… Then take yourself to Fenocchio for a good ice-​cream in the square.
I’m sorry to have to write this review, but 49.50Euros later it was a sheer disappointment.

I ordered my favorite salad, the salad Nicoise and a glass of Rosé! We sat outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather, can’t really get much better than that! Plus, the salad was excellent and so was the baguette!
I’d happily go back!

La civette, c’est l’endroit où je retrouve mes cousins à chaque fois que je vais à Nice donc c’est un café restau où j’aime aller a chacune de mes visites.
On est sur le cours saleya, et on voit défiler autant les habitués de la civette, les familles, que les touristes et on a la vue sur le marché selon le moment de la journée.
J’y vais généralement que pour le café mais j’y ai aussi pris quelques plats qui étaient corrects sans plus.

Un bar très sympa sur le coursaleya. En été ou en hiver, c’est l’endroit où on peut profiter du soleil autour du bon verre de vin.

Lieu à éviter si vous voulez en plus de votre commande, un verre d’eau !
Une belle situation, un cadre sans doute agréable, MAIS refus d’un verre d’eau à des consommateurs qui avaient pourtant commandé. INADMISSIBLE. A déconseiller à ceux qui veulent par nécessité un verre d’eau.

the guy said they weren’t serving food. then they served food to two tables around me. he didn’t let me know they started to serve food, so of course i left.
if they don’t want to work, i don’t want to go there.

Super ambiance pour un apéro ou le café de 16h

Pour voir et être vu. Service un peu rude lors de la soirée fille Le mardi. Mais on mange très correctement à petit prix pour le cours. Toujours bien fourni en beaux garçons de passage.

Au milieu des attrapes touristes, la civette fait figure de phare: service très rapide, très bon rapport qualité prix et les cocktails sont corrects.

Un classique
Un classique du cours, à l’heure de l’apéro pour les cakes de Nice ;) Plus sympa le midi pour profiter du soleil.

grand mythe du vieux Nice, très agréable par moment, mais je préfère éviter en pleine saison estival. Trop de monde et un peu cher.

A connaitre
Une institution à Nice. Cadre magnifique, en plein marché aux fleurs. Ambiance authentique, pas cher pour la côté.

Pour le cours Saleya…
c’est un endroit avec un accueil et une bonne qualité de service, le cadre est agréable, mais les additions s’en ressentent, car la jeunesse friquée de Nice s’y retrouve et c’est aussi surtout une usine à touristes.

Service un peu long, boisson moyenne.

Pourquoi pas, histoire de varier un peu sur les endroits du cours.

Quand l’équipe habituelle est là, c’est le top !
N’y allez pas si l’équipe habituelle est en congé ! Sinon l’ambiance est super, l’accueil chaleureux, l’équipe très complice, bref tout pour passer un excellent moment seul ou à plusieurs. Prenez le temps de vous y arrêter pour voir !

l’apéro est sacré à la civette! La clientèle y est bigarrée, avocats sortant du palais, jeunes cadres venus décompresser, vendeurs du voisinage, pépettes niçoises, jolis garçons… le rosé n’y est pas cher et tourne vite la tête! Heureusement, la civette propose quelques plats à partager, à des prix raisonnables.
Le midi, la terrasse est incontournable pour observer la vie du Cours, et il n’est pas rare de lier conversation avec vos voisins de table. Terrasse idéale aux beaux jours ou dès que le soleil pointe son nez.

ok c’est cher, mais franchement si vous avez envie de vous poser sur le cours, c’est quand même là que c’est le mieux.
Et les serveurs sont bien sympa ! (et moins marketing que les autres du cours saleya)

Personnellement je né fréquente pas la civette du cours, mais je né déteste pas m’y poser parfois pour observer mes contemporains.
C’est Le bar de l’apéro avant les virées nocturnes des autochtones qui se repèrent facilement.
Je n’en dirai pas plus.

Trop cher
Prix beaucoup trop élevés pour des boissons basiques. Un exemple: 8 € la pinte de bière en pleine journée. Zone touristique oblige, dommage.

Update Jan 2012 Since my earlier review, the menu has been cut back drastically; snacks such as socca and some of the bruschettas have disappeared, which is a shame La Civette is now a great place to lunch/​brunch and drink, but if you want a light snack, the choice is a little limited. As ever, friendly staff and a great place to while away an hour or two, especially mid-​morning, when the market’s are up and running. Probably the best spot on the Cours as mentioned in other (English and French) reviews, it enjoys sunshine throughout the day and is extremely popular be prepared to wait for a table at lunchtime. The Civette is a local gay hang-​out. During the day, the crowd is pretty mixed; all ages, both sexes. This changes dramatically at night-​time, and just about every gay dans la ville is to (or has to) be seen there at some point, so even though there’s no dress code, you’ll feel better if you dress up to dress down. The Bandol is their best wine; the white is more than a little tart and it’s worth splashing out for a better-​tasting bottle. Food is good; the omelets and salads are superb and club sandwiches are enough for two to share (avec frites). If you’re stuck for somewhere to drink after the fireworks on New Year’s eve, this is a good spot. The staff handed out streamers and other party gear, and we drank until the small hours.

Très sympa cet endroit. Idéalement placé, il y règne une bonne ambiance. Sans conteste, le meilleur café du cours saleya.
De surcroît, les prix y sont très corrects.
Café Gay-​friendly.

Strassencafe auf dem Cours Saleya, im Zentrum der Nizzaer Altstadt. Nett fuer einen Pastis oder ein sonstiges Getraenk, nett ebenso fuer die Atmosphaere und den Ausblick auf den Markt und die Passanten, Essen ist mittelmaessig, Snackqualitaet halt. Und das Café ist eben nicht nur von Touristen frequentiert.

When in Nice you HAVE to stop on the flower market on Cours Saleya in the heart of the Old Town. There the place to drink your coffee is definitely La Civette. At least this is the place for the locals, opening their Nice-​Matin while having coffee or lunching with friends and family. This is particularly enjoyable during the market (every morning) with a South facing terrasse typically bathed by a perfect sun, and during the summer’s warm evenings to chill. The food is also good and reasonnable (compared to most other places around) so La Civette is a good spot for a good value lunch (less than EUR20). And you can always come back for the apéritif
