Au Chien Qui Fume

Great seafood location. The grilled seabass and grilled seabream was fantastic. We enjoyed the seafood platter as well. Price is rather decent especially for Paris. A tad slow service but generally pleasant.

Le saviez-​vous? «Au chien qui fume» fait partie des plus anciens restaurants de la. capitale au même titre que le Procope ou La Pérouse. Il est là depuis … 1740 ! Rien de pesant ou de formel. Bien au contraire, une déco ludique et amusante faite de chiens. Des portraits classiques ainsi revisités par la gente canine (les fâmeuses Trois Grâces !) Et bien sûr, le chien qui fume ! Toutes sortes de menus (express, gourmand) et de formules de plats de brasserie. Convient aussi bien pour un déjeûner de travail que familial. Serveur plein d’humour, surtout avec les enfants.
À l’angle des rues Berger et du Pont Neuf, il est facile à trouver. À proximité de la porte de Rambuteau, il a tout à gagner, également, du nouveau forum des Halles dont les travaux s’achèvent actuellement (la Canopée !) L’occasion de lui rendre visite.

Horrible service which cannot under any circumstances make up for their good food. Seeing that they were very nice to the tables next to us, we could not help but deduce that they were discriminating us in terms of service.
Most of the positive reviews (French and English) seem to come from people who have ordered the seafood platter. Maybe that’s what gives you human dignity here.
Party of two at dinner. I asked for an English menu as my friend does not speak French, and when I made a small grammatical error the waiter almost yelled «non, non, non» then corrected me.
We ordered the course menu, and when asked did not order wine because we do not drink alcohol. The waiter said «Why you no drink wine?“in the same condescending tone he used to correct my French. We wanted to say that we will instead order drinks without alcohol, but he just walked away.
When our food was served, the same waiter explained to my friend how to eat their food. «You must pour this sauce from the pot onto the food». Maybe he was just doing his job, but with the service we’ve had so far, it sounded patronising.
The food is well presented and cooked.
Finally, when it was time for us to pay the check, another waiter came towards our table and stood there. The closest guests were two tables away so we thought he was bringing us the bill instead of our waiter, so we asked if we could please have the bill. He yelled (the tables next to us turned and started watching) «Pourquoi vous me demandez ça?!!» («Why you ask me this?»). We apologised and said since he was standing there he wanted to check on us. I don’t know in what kind of establishment customers apologise to the staff for making a simple mistake but he had already shouted at us. By this time we just wanted to get the check and get the hell out.
We are not sorry that we did not leave any tip. We did not get bad service, we were shouted at and patronised. We feel they did not deserve any cent more than the food which we did enjoy.
Overall, my dfriend and I (both foreigners) were severely mistreated by the staff. We were outraged as we have not seen this kind of service anywhere, in Paris, in the world. We have tried several restaurants in France so we know this was an unfortunate mistake. But if you look Asian or African, you might not want to go here.

«The Smoking Dog.» Adorable theme. Who doesn’t love dogs? And smoking, that’s cool, right? To my American English-​primed ears, «Au Chien Qui Fume» sounds so exotic and romantic. The painted dogs with pipes on the walls and bar panels are charming, storybook-​like details.
Au Chien Qui Fume is a notch above your average brasserie. We had two types of oysters, salad with foie gras, duck gizzards, and smoked duck. All the food was amazing, especially if you like duck. If you love fresh seafood, this is a great choice. They have a full bar running; we paired our meal with Pelforth blonde beer on tap (can’t get that in California!). When we were there, the restaurant was about 2/​3rds full. Despite that, the service is super fast, accommodating, and tourist-​friendly.
Highly recommended for an overall lovely French dining experience (at least from this newbie tourist’s point of view).

I’m mitigated about this place, the food wasn’t bad but the service was horrible:
1) waiters wake each two minute to ask if we want to start with something to drink, we said «no» several times and they just stop when they had our order.
2) The waiter break a bottle of wine on my pants, no offer from the house
3) waiters were moving stuff on the table using the plate…
The kitchen team seems to be good and have some great ideas but I hope the management will change the service team asap to avoid getting tons of bad reviews.

Restaurant écailleur typique de Paris. Très vieille enseigne qui cultive une cuisine parisienne. Service dans des plats en cuivre. Si on aime les chiens il y en a partout sous toutes les formes. Service tardif on peut donc y échouer après l’apéro.

One of the hotel staff recommended us to dine at Au Chien Qui Fume. We were thinking about having some oysters and this was the perfect place.
We started off with a seafood platter, which had oysters, clams, mussels, welks, winkles, shrimp and baby shrimp. This was the first time I tried raw mussels and they were very fresh. All the shellfish were very fresh.
My daughter had fun using needles to get meat out of little winkles. I grew up eating them when I was little but this was the first time for her.
For the main course we ordered escargot casserole and French onion soup. They were delicious. And yummy cream brûlée.
Excellent service. Three guys took good care of us.

Au Chien qui Fume is a fine dining choice in the area of les Halles. It is also a price point above your typical brasseries, bistros or cafés in the area. The fresh seafood, such as clams and oysters, is artfully presented (see pics) on ice. Friendly and helpful staff.
For lunch, I chose Caesar salad (La Grande Salade Caesar) with fresh clams appetizer.
Colleagues chose casserole of snails with mushrooms (La Cassolette d’Escargots aux Pleurotes), steak (Le Filet de Boeuf Grillé with Sauce Béarnaise), and the seafood selection of the day, and plate of fresh oysters.
Smoking-​dog Explanation: When it is time to leave, you are given humorous and memorable postcards of smoking dogs. Will send to some dog-​loving friends. I think the original owner loved his poodles and terriers who could smoke a pipe fitting Sherlock Holmes. Really. Smoking dogs are part of the restaurant’s motif.
There is also a Le Happy Hour, 4−8pm.
Tip: Seafood is selection #1 if you like seafood.

Tres bien mage, j’aime le tranches de foi gras pourtant né pas chère, un bonne bouteille et voila nous sommes contents :-)

This is absolutely one to skip. It has extremely poor service, ambiance and food. Au Chien Que Fume has a good chance for being the worse restaurant in Paris. Steer clear!

Very good food, Menu in Russian. Typical old French design. Perfect service but hight prices.

This place is a joke. Tourist trap; if you have any interest in actually tasting your food, don’t eat here. All six people in my party all asked the same question; how could a restaurant suck the flavor out of food? Luckily we ordered a good bottle of wine so we could joke about it. Dishes were dirty and service was poor.

Loved this place.
A bit dated decoration but it kind of helps the overall ambiance of this typical French restaurant. The food is served by kind waiters who were very helpful and pleasant. Plates were great and the wine recommended by the waiter also complied fully to my expectation.
And their profiteroles were served so generously, my wife who usually don’t share her deserts had to share some with me.

Un peu trop cher…
J’ai plusieurs fois déjeuné dans ce restaurant très bien situé. On y est bien reçu, la carte est plutôt pas mal mais oups, les prix sont tout de même trop élevés pour une simple cuisine de bistrot et des portions variables…

Au chien fumiste
Cet établissement où l’on se presse n’est sans doute plus à la hauteur de sa réputation, personnel né songeant qu’à vous caser n’importe où, pourvu que vous consommiez ! Repas et service express, et hop au suivant. Pour une addition quand même élevée, il faut mieux se garder d’y aller, beaucoup d’autres établissements sauront vous servir de manière plus correcte et moins expédiante. La publicité dans les magazines parisiens même si elle remplit le restaurant n’offre aucune garantie de service et de qualité qui dans cet endroit font gravement défaut.

Service agréable, carte riche, plats excellents et copieux, carte des vins complète. Bref, ce restaurant mérite le détour malgré les travaux des Halles.

Je trouve que l’accueil est assez chaleureuse Tout se passait bien jusqu’au moment de faire la commande le serveur fut froid et desagreable Ensuite l’entrée (foie gras fais maison) enormement decu tres mauvais gout Et le detail qui tue: on mangeait mais sous notre table un verre entier cassé du client juste avant nous, laissé sous la table. Je trouve ca honteux car si cela arriverait l’ete cela aurait pu etre dangereux vu que nous aurions été en claquette. Le plat tres decevant aussi plein d’arrete et mauvaise cuisson Je né pense pas y retourner, même pour une semaine a paris

J’y suis allé qu’une seule fois et nous avons été correctement servi. L’accueil était bien. Il est vrai que les «Gambas» chez eux se rapprochent beaucoup plus à de grosses crevettes. Un peu déçue par rapport à cela.

Visited Paris for two weeks in Nov 2011. Dined here for dinner once and once just for dessert. We experienced excellent and friendly service all over Paris. … except here We speak French, yet staff at Au Chien Qui Fume automatically switched to English (based on my partner’s last name, we presume, which is very Anglo-​sounding) and stayed in English even when we spoke French back to them. There’s a certain je né sais quoi arrogance here … the stereotypical arrogance that one hears about, but we didn’t experience anywhere else in Paris (well, except one haggard underwear saleswoman at Galleries Lafayette).
The food here was so-​so. The desserts are not their forte. The St Jacques (scallops) were amazingly delicious, as was the French onion soup. The rack of lamb … nice, but not the best.
Overall, nice food, but the attitude is not justified.

This place was conveniently open and near the theater. Nice corner view of street scape and great service! Food was wonderfull and would certainly eat here again.

The staff here was friendly when we entered. It was freezing outside, so we were just glad to be out from the elements. We ordered the prix fixe dinners – one was a chicken pot and the other was a pork pot (both with vegetables in sauce). There was a ton of food! We couldn’t finish it all. Well, I was actually trying to save some room for my dessert – crème brûlée.
All in all, it was a good meal.

Très étrange ce dernier commentaire, que je né rejoins évidemment pas, je n’ai jamais été déçu.
Brasserie dans le plus pur style parisien avec ses écaillers dehors, service très pro, les plats sont standards mais bien préparés.
Le lieu a vraiment du cachet, on sent qu’il y a une histoire !

A la vue des commentaires, j’etait sur de me régaler…mais en fait non !
On y mange yres moyennement, leur tatin tomate/​mozza/​basilic sur papier semblait alléchante mais en fait non… ce plat n’est pas du tout aboutit avec une pâté qui trempe dans du pistou donc toute mole.
Leur piece du boucher n’est pas d’exelente qualité, le produit n’est pas spécialement goûteux et est nerveux. Celui ci etait accompagné d’haricots verts (surgelés) et de frites maison selon eux, surgelées selon mes convictions personelles.
Leur cochon de lait rôti n’est pas rôti du tout mais mijotté en sauce…
Quand au service, pas super mais encore ca pouvait aller.
Bref, grande deception, je n’ai meme pas pris de dessert de peur d’etre encore plus deçu.
P.s: en ce qui concerne la mousse au chocolat du commentaire précédant, ils n’en font tout simplement pas.

C’est vrai ici on est presque dans le clichés de la brasserie parisienne, prête à happer le touriste étranger ou le campagnard tout juste monté de sa province? et bien NON: au dela du clichés, c’est bon, service aimable et prévenant, et pas plus cher que d’autres très bonnes brasseries… parisienne. Plats bien servis et copieux, ma pièce de boeuf était fondante, et les desserts sont (à priori) fait (bien) maison !

4 stars because of the escargot and oysters.
My bf and I were so hungry and cold because it was raining that day and the restaurant we wanted to try around that area was closed for three months. Bad timing I know… So we found this place and it was even better because they had an English menu!
We waited for about 10 minutes so we were assuming this place was ok given the amount of people eating here. Everyone was ordering the seafood platter but we just ordered from the prix fixe menu. I had the escargot and grilled fish. The bf had the oysters and calf head hotpot. Sounds strange but he wanted to try something different. The escargot was already out of the shell and into a creamy sauce soup thing. It was so good! The oysters were quite fresh. They helped me debone the fish and that was quite yummy as well. My bf’s calf head soup hot pot was literally a hot pot. There was no way he could finish it. The calf head was fatty and tasty but it got a bit salty near the end. It was a good experience but I’m sure there are better restaurants out there.

Rien n’est bon, pas même le service avec un maître d’hôtel hargneux avec son équipe, décevant !! Excessivement cher, ambiance stressante…

Au Chien qui fume on cultive l’esprit des restaurants parisiens traditionnels.
On commence par la déco classique, boiserie foncé pour les meubles et le bar, nappes blanches, lumières légèrement tamisées, sans oublier les petites statuettes de chiens exposées un peu partout, les serveurs portent des tabliers blancs et des vestes rouges.
Quant à la cuisine rien d’étonnant non plus, salades, fruits de mer, plats en sauce, plats du jour selon les disponibilités du marché. C’est assez bon et le menu Chien Coquin est à 23,90 euros, entrée, plats, desserts et il y a pas mal de choix.

Par contre, niveau amabilité, il y a de sacrés progrès à faire! Pas un sourire, un service qui laisse à désirer (demander exactement 5 fois une carafe d’eau, c’est limite…).
Et pourtant, les plats sont bons, comme dans toute brasserie parisienne! Et sont un peu chers, comme dans toute brasserie parisienne!
La terrasse a l’air agréable surtout quand il y a du soleil.
L’avantage est aussi la situation géographique du restaurant: collé à la galerie souterraine des Halles. Et le shopping, c’est connu, ça creuse!

Wir waren im «Au chien qui fume» am Ostermontag, als viele Restaurants geschlossen waren und es nicht so einfach war, zu sechst ein Restaurant zu finden.
Gut, der erste Eindruck ließ vermuten, dass direkt um die Ecke vom Pont Neuf und Louvre sich hier eine Touristenfalle verbirgt, aber so war es nicht.
Das Restaurant ist sehr groß, also weniger intim und beschaulich. Aber die Kellner sind auf Zack und aus einer großen Speisenkarte kommen die frisch zubereiteten Speisen. Ich hatte eine ganze gegrillte/​gedünste Barbe, die der nette Herr mir komplett entgrätet hat. Dazu gab es eine leckere Soße und Gemüse.
Mit diesem Restaurant macht man wirklich nichts falsch. Lecker und frisch. Auch viele Franzosen kommen hierher, was ich als gutes Zeichen werte, wenn ich in der Fremde bin.
Einzig: es gibt in Frankreich allgemein und speziell in Paris so viel charmantere, kuscheligere Restaurants.

j’avais un dîner pour 10 personnes à organiser. je suis passée au chien qui fume une semaine avant, j’ai parlé avec le chef de salle qui m’a donné le numéro de sa secrétaire pour organiser le dîner ensemble. on a parlé, on a convenu d’une carte pas trop chère (mes amis né roulent pas tous sur l’or) 23 et 28EUR en prenant le plat avec juste l’entrée ou le dessert. les autres menus (complets) sont plus chers, si mes souvenirs sont bons, ça va jusqu’à 50EUR. ils ont été parfaits.
le jour dit, je me la suis pétée genre «grands resto», je leur avais fait des petits ballotins avec des chocolats, la table était immaculée, blanche, très classe, et avec les menus qu’ils m’avaient faits, on a mangé l’esprit tranquille pour aussi cher qu’on voulait.

le rapport qualité-​prix est excellent, les produits sont d’excellente qualité, la quantité est suffisante. j’ai même eu de la peine à finir. j’avais pris du poisson et ils sont venus le flamber dans la salle, devant nous. vraiment un service de qualité grand resto!
allez-​y, même un week-​end, les tables né sont pas collées les unes aux autres, vous serez bien. c’est bien pour les repas en amoureux, ou avec des amis qui aiment la bonne cuisine. je né classerai pas ce resto dans les bistros. c’est un vrai restaurant, classe moyenne entre resto et grand resto, à prix réduit. alors profitez-​en!

Pour faire connaitre à nos amis proviciaux ou étrangers un VRAI bistrot parisien, il faut les entraîner au Chien qui fume.

Un très vieux restaurant parisien, brasserie classique avec des plats à la carte et deux formules abordable. Les assiettes sont bien fournies et le contenu est délicieux (L’escalope de foie gras frais avec les ravioles aux champignons est une tuerie).
Ils servent aussi, pour les amateurs, des huîtres toute l’année.
L’accueil est parfait: les serveurs sont drôles et sympathiques tout en restant efficaces et discrets.
