In Paris, in the Maree. A block away from the Bastille. Good location. Not too far from the Louvre and Notre Dame. Room layout kinda funky due to the layout of the old school building. Nice breakfast.

The Castex Hotel was the perfect lodging for my first time in Paris. Sure, the rooms are very small, but most Paris spaces are like that. It has a very distinct charm that fits the neighborhood and gives you the sense that you are visiting Paris. The biggest selling point for this hotel is the location, which allows easy access to all of the major tourist sites. The staff here speaks many languages and are very accommodating. I will say that you should allow extra time checking out, as they do their accounting by the books, that is by handwriting all the paperwork.(They do accept credit cards, just make sure to have a chip in your card, as with most every place in Europe.) Random notes: — Readily available hot water for showering, very important. — More«modern» bathroom, which is nice. — TV with some programming in all languages, not that you’ll be doing much of that when in Paris. — Small fridge for storing food, how nice! — Lots of closet space, despite the size of our room. — Breakfast(11 euro) is pretty diverse, though they only have American coffee available(bleck).

I only stayed one night here because I had arrived one day earlier then my family and needed a place to stay becuase we always rent an apartment. I’ve been to Paris many times although I hadn’t stayed in the Maris. This trip I decided I would! The staff was very welcoming. My room wasa lovely typical French accomdations except the bed took up the majority of the space. Can’t really complain about having a bed that’s too large, but it didn’t give you much room to walk around it. C’est la vie! The continental breaksfast was more then delightful but it was the dining space that blew me away. It was a lovely space located in the basement. Although there was a chill in the air, it felt warm and inviting. I could have spent the whole day there reading a great book while drinking café! But alas! I’m in Paris so why stay in?! There are two Metro’s nearby. A Monprix is also close. Lla post located on the same street as the hotel. People might think there isn’t much located close by. Well, they are sorely wrong. Besides the Bastille, of course, there is the Square de Louis XIII, Cimetiere du Pere Lachaise, Mairie de Paris, the ile Saint Louis and the Jardine de Plantas which has the most delightfully enchated zoo I’ve ever seen! This is just scratching the surface. The Maris is enchanting as well. In all it’s a sweet hotel in a great location.

One look at my room at the Castex Hôtel and all I could do was laugh at the two sad little twin beds, slightly sunken in at the middle(which would squeak when I turned over in the night — glad I didn’t attempt anything more exuberant upon them.) My room was up one dark flight of stairs which lead to a landing upon which there were several doors. Behind one of those doors and down a similarly dark hallway was my room. After a couple of ins and outs I discovered the light switches in the hallway(unfortunately, they do not immediately announce themselves when you’re searching in the dark.) There’s old and charming and then there’s just old(and kind of dusty.) Sadly, my accommodations at the Castex fall squarely into the latter category. I found my room fairly dumpy and definitely did not look forward to returning to it after a series of long days. The staff were friendly, which I appreciated. But the final nail in the coffin for the Castex was when they declined my card upon check out. This same card worked both before and after their attempted charge. This took extra time to sort out and I feared I’d miss my train as a result. I wouldn’t recommend the Castex Hôtel to friends and it’s not a place to which I’d consider returning.
