El Mercado

Je commence cet avis en attendant l’addition.
Je dois avouer que je n’avais pas du tout lu les avis avant de me rendre dans ce restaurant.
En sortant d’une longue séance de cinéma sur les Champs, on trouve ce «mexicain» dans une des nombreuses rue perpendiculaires à l’avenue, la carte est simple mais semble efficace. On entre.
Le décor est sobre mais trop gris… Tables, mur. L’ensemble n’est pas agréable.
Nachos légumes et trois tacos, c’est parti.
Le service est un petit peu long mais passable.
Le repas n’est pas terrible, tout juste normal. J’aurai pu faire pareil chez moi si ce n’est mieux (je vous assure que je né suis pas une grande cuisinière).
Pas même une carafe d’eau n’est apportée. La serveuse se réfugie derrière le comptoir et son téléphone. Après mon déplacement et ma demande on obtient une carafe mais pas de verres…
Classée sans suite.

Mon dieu quelle horreur. Insalubre et mauvais… Les avis à 5 étoiles sont plus que douteux.

El Mercado provides you with an excellent atmosphere accompanied by outstanding service. I believe El Mercado will definitely satisfy your Mexican food craving while keeping your budget on track. In comparison to all the overly priced café’s around Paris, I can assure you that this will be the best «bang for your euro.» In other words the best tasting food for the best prices in town. They offer very delicious lunch specials. I always chose my personal favorite; «Burrito Alegria.» Which comes with a drink and dessert. If only I was in Paris, I would be spoiling myself with one of those burritos right now. After all This restaurant brought me back to my Southern California roots, where Mexican culture and cuisine has entered it’s way into everyone’s lives. The only thing missing is taco Tuesday but I’m sure they’re working on adding such a crucial detail. Last but not least I cannot forget to mention Crystal the waitress/​hostess of the restaurant. She’s definitely one of the sweetest Parisians I met throughout my visit, She was very helpful and accomodating. And judging from my experiences in Paris, it’s hard to come by such a helpful Parisian server. This restaurant stands out among the rest, next time I’m in town I’ll be sure to visit El Mercado And treat myself to a burrito Alegria.

Being from Southern California and spoiled by all the great Mexican food, we were really let down by Mercado food. Thought that the resturant was operated by Mexicans, that they would have true identity to there own food. Unfortunately not. A small burrito that we paid $ 11 euros, something that probably cost them no more than two euros to make. Big disappointment.

Belle découverte ce midi. De prime abord, une carte limitée ce qui est plutôt bon signe. En effet nourriture excellente, et puis des responsables et serveurs attentifs et agréables. Par ailleurs, on sent dès l’entrée une certaine convivialité renforcé par la proximité des tables (choses qui né nous a pas particulièrement dérangé). Franchement pas cher pour la quantiqualité.

Let me start by saying that this place has potential. And also, the prices pretty much can’t be beat in this neighborhood or anywhere else in Paris, for that matter.
Now for the nitty gritty. I came to meet a friend for lunch at noon. The place was crowded and it was hard to squeeze in between the two tables to get to my seat (mostly because they weighed two tons and I couldn’t slide mir over one inch). The restaurant has terrible accoustics, it was so loud for lunch I had to practically read lips when having a conversation. Ambiance is a bit cold but hopefully they’ll work on that.
As for food, I ordered a burrito. And it was only 6 €!! I added a supplement of guacamole for 1 € and a supplement of spicy salsa for 1 € as well. The guac was freshly made, and a solid serving. The salsa, however was not spicy by any TexMex standard. I would not have paid extra for that, especially since there was a bottle of free Tabasco sitting on my table. My second biggest gripe was that the burrito was not folded so that it could be picked up and eaten by hand. I was obligated to cut it with my fork and knife and I found that somewhat burrito blasphemy.
Taste-​wise it was OK. I got the veggie option and it was a bit lacking in flavor. The tortilla hadn’t been warmed and was a bit tough as well.
My friend got the tortilla soup which came with chips, cheese and sour cream for 6 €. It looked tasty and was a hearty portion.
All in all, I’d be willing to retry this place in a few months but I’m not dying to get back right away.

Alors, il y a des points forts chez El Mercado :

* Le personnel aimable
* Les shots de tequila Herradura et El Jimador à partir de 3 €.
Malheureusement qu’il faut avaler 10 shots avant de croire que ce qui est dans l’assiette est du mexicain.
C’est pas à dire que la bouffe est mauvaise — avec assez de la sauce Tabasco rouge ou verte (mouais, il y a de la Tabasco sur la table, mais pa de vraie sauce piquante) et ça se mange. Juste que c’est … pas mexicain.
Petite précision sur la «sauce épicée» en option: Pas du tout épicé mec.
Normalement une telle blague de cuisine «mexicaine» me met en colère mais je suis sorti en tristesse. La cuisine était autant fade qu’elle n’a même pas inspiré la passion de la haine. :(

Ok, so there are a few good things about El Mercado:
* The painting of Frida Kahlo in a Daft Punk t-​shirt
* The friendly waitstaff
* Shots of Herradura and El Jimador tequila starting at € 3.
Unfortunately, you’ll have to take about 10 of those shots before you start believing what’s in the plate is Mexican food.
This isn’t to say that the food is bad — dump enough red or green Tabasco on it (that’s right, there’s Tabasco on the table here, not any actual hot sauce) and it actually tastes decent. It’s just… not Mexican food.
Oh, and the optional «sauce épicée?» Not épicé at all, vato.
Normally such egregiously laughable «Mexican» food makes me mad, but I just walked out feeling sad. I guess it was so bland that it didn’t inspire enough passion for me to be angry. :(

Ce restaurant mexicain est une vraie blague! Tous les plats qui nous ont été servis étaient horribles, de la pauvre assiette de nachos aux burritos (bœuf, poulet ou légumes, tous vraiment nuls), en passant par une salade. De plus, la propreté des lieux laisse à désirer… Stay Away!!!

Quand vous rentrez dans un restaurant et que la première chose qui vous sauté aux yeux est le tableau de l’illustration connue de Frida Kahlo portant le t-​shirt à l’effigie des Daft Punk: vous êtes déjà sûr que ce restaurant a tout gagné.
Outré une déco sans faute qui vous met à l’aise: un plat mexicain de qualité à 11 € à côté des Champs? Oui oui, c’est possible, et non les proportions né sont pas minimes !
En parlant de qualité, rien à dire, j’ai même re-​découvert les quesadillas. Peut-​être un bémol: A quand les fajitas ?
Service jeune et rapide. En bref, très bon moment passé, surtout pour un petit restaurant mexicain qui vient d’ouvrir ses portes !
