Les Deux Magots

Didn’t think their famous hot chocolate was that great, and neither is their coffee. They were out of chocolate croissants by 10am, which is kind of unacceptable — especially given it was a week day. That said, its a box every tourist must check. Just stop in for one drink, watch the people fly by — and keep it moving.

Very expensive, but I mean you’re sitting where Sartre, Picasso, Hemingway, and many more came to write and create!
Les Deux Magots is located in the upscale neighborhood of Saint-​Germain-​des-​Prés, and along the Boulevard you can find many luxury fashion brands. So after an afternoon of shopping, you can take a rest, order a glass of wine, and people watch.

The duck is a must to eat in this place, but not really liked the dessert with the pistachio filling inside (cant remember the name). The server was very attentive and nice too. If you look for a fancy, yet easy place where you can enjoy your food and the surrounding area, this might be it:)

It was a lifelong dream to come here and to all the famous cafes in the area, but in this case reality was even better!
Not only is the café right by one of my favorite churches in Paris (Saint Germain des près, which gave the name to the neighborhood) but it’s also the best café here!
Sit in the patio looking at the church and at the busy boulevard while some elegant and sophisticated (trust me they’re all always like that!) server comes to help you. Don’t believe their bad rep, at least here, the staff is lovely and very polite, regardless if you speak French or not.
The food was great, we all had different sandwiches and they were all delicious, but they were quite big, so it’s a good idea to share, especially if you’re not that hungry. I had the club sandwich and it was by consensus (of our table) the best!
We all had fresh orange juice and we were happy to find out it was really fresh (that’s really hard in Europe) and it was delicious! It was definitely the best orange juice we had in Paris, tied with Brasserie Lipp, but at Les Deux Magots it’s a larger portion so they win!
For dessert, there came another elegant and sophisticated server with a silver platter with our options from non other than Pierre Hermè! Can we have all of them?! We each had one and I had my favorite: the classic raspberry Ispahan.
Always a lovely time here!

Went for dessert tart tartans with ice cream, double espresso and an Armagnac.$ 60 dessert coffee and a drink. I love Paris!

iconic café in my favorite neighborhood in the city. great service, great area to people watch too! you’re next to a beautiful church, LV, Cartier, and of course Café Flore too. A must if you’re in Paris and love literature

Amazing Food, the best hot chocolate in the world, the Escargot was to die for.
The ambience here was dope and even though people could tell we were Americans they treated us with great service and respect. We ended up having great waiters and came back to eat here 3 nights in a row

We are staying right down the street, so we HAD to come and experience les deux magots. We came for breakfast & sat outside facing the street. Lovely breakfast and pleasant service. I give 4 stars because of the price… definitely a tourist trap…$ 55e for a breakfast for 2 is a bit ridiculous. My dinner last night cost about the same and we had 3 courses.

Came here just because it is one of the things to do in Paris due to the rich history of the place. While I expected this place to be a tourist trap, I didn’t expect such high prices for a cup of coffee and expresso. Well, I expected high prices… but I didn’t expect to sever my left nut for a cup of joe. At least this place is now off my bucket list.

Famous café once the rendezvous of the literary, artists and the like — purportedly Hemingway, James Joyce, Pablo Picasso to name a few. It is a tourist stop so very crowded and pricey. I had the quiche of the day and it was excellent. The server was appropriately attentive. In spite of the crowds, I think it is well worth a stop for a bite to eat and enjoy thinking about an exciting time in its history.

I mostly wanted to check this place out because apparently, Hemingway and other famous writers used to frequent this spot. This place is definitely touristy, and the prices are outrageous. The service here wasn’t too friendly either. I just got a regular coffee, and my BF got an espresso, and it nearly costed an arm and a leg. And they weren’t even that good. Definitely a tourist shop, but I like the history behind this place. Come here for the experience, but expect to pay a hefty price for it.

Spent our last hours in Paris here for a light lunch and people watching. Both were good. I had a classic quiche lorraine and my wife had an egg and cheese omelette. Food was tasty. We complimented the meal with a couple St Germain cocktails.
Service is spotty though. At least 3 other tables were served drinks before anyone decided to take our order. This is not usually the case at these cafes. Disappointed.
Keep in mind this place isn’t for the «value conscious «. My light lunch and 4 drinks totaled € 102. I found Le St Germain down the street to have better value and terrifically attentive staff.

There are two stories about how CAFE de LES DEUX-​MAGOTS got its name: one claims it took the name from a hat shop on the same site; another that it once was a business dealing in oriental merchandise whose trademark was two Chinese porcelain figures (magots). The figures are on center posts inside, where the tables beneath offer quiet sitting. Hundreds of writers in the first half of the 20^th century lived within steps of the Deux-​Magots and used it (or nearby Café de Flore) as a meeting place. One was Oscar Wilde who had coffee and a roll each morning there and sipped absinthe (wormwood, now illegal) every evening at a table outside. Janet Flanner (a columnist at that time for the NEW YORKER) told of meeting Ernest Hemingway there once. Hemingway, however, was more a fan of livelier places like those on Boulevard Montparnasse where alcoholic beverages were consumed more than coffee.
Basically, LES DEUX-​MAGOTS is a café meaning a place where one drinks COFFEE. It is NOT a RESTAURANT. Up until a few years ago, the only food (other than breakfast croissants) was something like the traditional «Croque Monsieur» (basically a grilled ham and cheese sandwich), or with a fried egg on top – «Croque Madame (my favorite for late breakfast/​early lunch). Nowadays, many French are eating lighter meals (really snacks) at lunch time and other items have been added to the menu – mostly sandwiches. (There are other offerings but they are expensive and not that good for the price. If you want to eat REAL FOOD, go to LIPP across the street but NOT at peak lunch or dinner hours as it is PACKED then). Also offered at LES DEUX-​MAGOTS are a variety of pastries to accompany coffee in the late afternoon.
A seat at a table outside LES DEUX-​MAGOTS provides great people-​watching. Go after lunchtime, order coffee or some other drink and maybe a dessert and sit as long as you like. «Chair-​time» is what you are paying for more than the coffee. If coffee is the only thing you want, go to a place where you can drink it standing up at the bar. It usually will cost you half.

Je n’avais plus remis les pieds aux Deux Magots depuis mes premiers mois de vie à Paris (il y a 8 ans) car je gardais en tête le prix astronomique de leur expresso (qui avait BIEN fait mal à mon portefeuille d’étudiante).
J’y ai de nouveau bu un verre ce samedi, contrainte et forcée par deux personnes de ma famille né vivant pas à Paris (et qui aiment ce genre de lieu…). 17,5 Euros la coupe de champagne maison… no comment. Pour compenser j’ai pris un perrier menthe, très cher aussi.
Leur terrasse entourée de verdure n’est pas désagréable mais clairement les prix et le service pas vraiment à la hauteur font qu’on né m’y reprendra plus (ou alors dans 8 ans ;-)

I came here for the experience, not the coffee. The experience is Parisian to the core. Great people watching, absentee waiters, customers that stay for a long time and keep to themselves, etc. the coffee was nothing to write home about. It was run of the mill coffee, that was served with a small square of chocolate. It needed the chocolate.
When a serveuse came by with a tray of desserts and I got a tarte framboise. It was delicious and totally made up for the meh coffee.

Yes. A tourist trap. But it’s a MUST. Typical French Bistro. Sit inside. Although tables are close and cozy, you feel the energy and the vibe inside, versus outside.
Service is great! It’s pricey, but not terribly expensive. Glass of wine, croque (sandwich) or salad, espresso, about $ 30 pp. (USD). And you experience a bistro that’s been servicing the likes of Hemingway, Picasso, James Joyce, to name a few, imbibed and dined.

Bien évidemment les habitants de saint germain et plus encore les intellectuels ont déserté cet endroit depuis des lustres pour des territoires plus abordables et plus authentiques. Place aux touristes.
Reste quelques rendez vous entre bourgeois qui parfois sont causasses (ceux qui portent aux gémonies les germanopratins bobos sont clients)
Préférer le petit-​déjeuner au lunch sauf le dimanche
Éviter l’après-midi et le soir

On the recommendation of a good friend we made our way to Les Deux Magots for dinner one night. By far the best meal I had while in Paris. We were traveling with our 5 year old daughter, while she is a picky eater we were able to find something on the menu to make her happy.
The location, on the corner with outdoor seating and very comfortable, we didn’t feel like were were crowded or get any grim looks from other patrons who disapproved of our bring a child. We were offered a table out of the way and off on our own. It was a bit late and I assume the place is usually more crowded than it was at that time.
The service was nothing short of perfect, they were very accommodating and more than happy to make some recommendations. I ended up having the saddle of lamb, spinach and grilled almonds. It was divine, in fact the whole experience sort of ruined me for some time after. I live in San Francisco and I am nothing short of spoiled when it comes to good food. This meal however sets the bar that little bit higher that I now am slightly more discerning when it comes to my lamb.
Also worth mentioning that the beer and Wine selection is wonderful.

A perfect example of a tourist trap, which should come as no surprise considering its location.
We try to avoid these types of places 99% of the time but on occasion have to settle when:
1. We are really really hungry and
2. It’s late afternoon and we are worried about missing the boat on lunch all together.
We stopped in for a quick bite to eat and had an idea of what was in store of us and we were right:
–Sub par food at extremely high prices.
–Being treated poorly because we were American (even though I spoke French to our server initially and he proceeded to speak to us only in English).
–And being charged 6 € for a bottle of Evian even though we asked for tap water.
I even attempted to order a glass of champagne (with very clear enunciation) and he chose to hear something else and pointed to a glass of white wine on the menu that was twice the price of the glass of champagne I wanted, to which I responded «never mind, I’ll just have the water».
I don’t recommend this place at all. Unless you are in a similar position as us and just needed something to eat due to time of day or looming «hangry-​ness». This is not a good representation of French food or customer service. At all. It’s places like this that make Americans feel unwanted and give them a bad taste in their mouth regarding how they are treated.
Go off the beaten path a bit and you will be amazed at what you can find in terms of both great food and extremely kind (and often extremely helpful) service.

Les Deux Magots café in the Saint-​Germain-​des-​Prés area of Paris, France. It once had a reputation as the rendezvous of the literary and intellectual élite of the city. It is now a popular tourist destination. We were in the area and hungry and stopped in for lunch.
It’s a cool place, it is touristy, it is not cheap. The wait staff and hostess were very friendly. They put up with my bad French. We had Croque Monsieur and Croque Madames. They were pretty good, perfect for lunch. It is also a nice place to watch the world go by in Paris.

Grande déception
Accueil nonchalant, places réservées mais accessibles à d’autres clients sans réservations, produits indisponibles,… Il aurait été plus simple de nous demander de partir. Cependant le cadre est superbe.

This is one of the historical «philosopher cafes» and part of the Golden Triangle along with Brasserie Lipp and Café de Flore. People like Hemingway and Picasso would visit in the 1920’s!
My wife and I ordered two coffees and two desserts, which happened to be desserts from Pierre Herme. The coffee was good but it was only half-​filled in an already small cup. We just looked at each other and kind of laughed. Only in Paris I guess.
The Pierre Herme desserts were excellent and they were probably the best part of our experience at the café though our waiter was also great. Lucky for us, he spoke good English, was very professional, and friendly.
I have to admit that when I got our bill…$ 40 euros or $ 50 USD I was shocked! I get there is a premium for the Pierre Herme desserts but wow!
It was a cool experience at Café Les Deux Magots but we would have been better off going back to Café de Flore where we got 2 full cups of coffee, our own refills, warm milk, and two chocolate croissants for $ 20 euros.

Un super endroit pour boire du chocolat … mais très cher ! 8,50 ou 9 euros le chocolat !!!
je n’y ai jamais diné mais je né le ferai pas.
C’est un endroit incontournable des touristes et des Parisiens.
Qui né connait pas les 2 magots, à Saint germain des prés en face du café Flore et de Vuitton … !
Toujours plein de monde allez y pour un goûter c’est sympathique.
C’est un endroit pas très moderne c’est certain mais un joli décor !

Probably the most famous of the Hemingway stops. I am giving it four stars based on the vibe of the place. If you actually come here to eat, I am sure that number will go down.
If you can snag a table outside, this is one of the top Parisian attractions. Drive a beer and people watch. That is what this place has to offer. It is like a living, breathing, landmark.

Véritable institution, cet endroit a une âme parisienne. Le petit déjeuner en terrasse au cœur de St germain, un vrai bonheur surtout en été.

Oui, c’est Saint-​Germain. Non, ça n’est plus pour les artistes.
Se rendre aux Deux Magots, siroter une boisson servie par un serveur à rouflaquettes dans un uniforme n’ayant pas évolué ou presque depuis des décennies, c’est ressentir l’âme même du vieux Saint-​Germain.
Alors oui les prix sont exorbitants (pour ce que c’est) et on imagine mal les artistes du faubourg d’antan s’y rendre aujourd’hui, mais le charme est quand même encore un petit peu là.
On y va une fois, parce que c’est les Deux Magots, mais c’est tout !

Oui c’est clinquant, les serveurs né savent pas sourire et si vous êtes en baskets, vous allez vite sentir que vous n’êtes pas vraiment à votre place. Pour autant, je conseille vraiment d’aller tester la terrasse, d’y boire un café ou de commander une omelette (divine) et de vivre, pour quelques instants, l’ambiance qui se dégage de la place Saint-​Germain.

Les Deux Magots attirent de nombreuses personnes (notamment les touristes) à cause de sa belle devanture et son historique.
Le cadre est en effet très joli.
Néanmoins beaucoup de déceptions tout au long du repas …
Un serveur qui né sourit pas du tout et nous parle franchement mal …
La carte n’est pas très exhaustive et les plats sont plutôt chers.
Ensuite, les plats né sont pas mauvais. Les St Jacques à la purée de topinambour sont bonnes. Mais né valent pas 38e le plat…
En dessert, ils nous appâtent avec leur Ispahan de chez Pierre Hermé… A 13e la pièce.
Bref, laissons les Deux Magots aux touristes et autres bobos artistes.

en plein débordement gastronomique, un passage romantique dans la plus belle ville du monde et cette brasserie à saint germain des près où je n’aurai jamais dû aller !!! le chocolat chaud biensur, tout le monde y va pour cela, le meilleur des meilleurs, juste délicieux et rien d’autre autour. ultra bondé, une légère attente avant de commander ce breuvage excellent qui me permettra toutes les comparaisons du monde, jamais un chocolat chaud né pourra être meilleur qu’ici. cher, très cher mais on y perd la raison, c’est trop bon, divin, exquis, parfaitement dosé !!!

Le bistrot des philosophes déjà tous morts, Sartre et De Beauvoir et compagnie, l’ambiance est moyenne, tout est trop cher, la bière est à 7 euros et le verre de vin est à 7 euros. Allons il y a mieux.
Le seul truc intéressant; se sont les écrivains en herbe qui prennent une table avec leurs pc portables afin d’écrire un peu, à la recherché d’inspiration.

Das Les Deux Magots ist schön gelegen, am Platz gegenüber der Kirche Saint-​Germain des Prés.
Ich sass an einem sonnigen Tag draussen, die Kundschaft ist international.
Ich hatte ein Club Sandwich mit Lachs und ein Glas Côtes du Rhôné, beides war gut.
Es wird auch sehr leckere Patisserie angeboten, habe ich aber nicht probiert.

C’est la troisième fois que j’y vais. Bizarrement la déco, l’ambiance et le chocolat chaud m’ont paru moins «super» qu’à l’époque. Disons qu’à 18h30 les Deux Magots c’est assez calme. On sent qu’on est dans un «entre deux». Les deux statues sont toujours là, idem pour les vieilles tables et chaises et les plaques aux noms prestigieux mais bizarrement j’ai eu un sentiment de vide dans la salle. Surement à cause du haut plafond. Peu de monde à cette heure ci. Beaucoup de personnes âgées et de touristes. Le chocolat était plus dilué que lors de mes deux premières visites. Très bon mais moins onctueux. Il est accompagné d’un verre d’eau. Mais pourquoi diable y mettre des glaçons? Le choc thermique vous connaissez?
Le prix reste «classique» pour un bon chocolat chaud dans Paris (7 euros).
Le toilettes sont assez bizarres. Je né suis pas fan des portes battantes et des pissotières juste à coté de ces mêmes portes. Et l’essuie mains en tissu… pitié…appliquez les règles d’hygièné!
Sinon coup de gueule contre le serveur qui né nous a pas laissé jouer aux cartes. A mon avis les Sartre et cie, eux, né se privaient pas pour faire ce qu’ils voulaient.
J’aime malgré tout les Deux Magots. Leur chocolat reste très bon mais attention à né pas s’endormir sur ses lauriers…

Bön, c’est sûr, c’est hors de prix.
Mais en bonne touriste/​résidente à Paris, j’y suis allée au moins une fois. Pour me dire que j’y suis allée.

Endroit à faire
Café historique du quartier de saint germain. L’endroit est sympa pour boire un café ou un verre en terrasse en appréciant l’environnement qu’offre le très beau quartier. Le service n’est pas forcément agréable ni les tarifs mais les deux magots reste un endroit à faire.

Le chocolat à l’ancienne est vraiment exceptionnel (et proposé à la vente, mais ce n’est pas la même chose à la maison.).
En revanche c’est surbondé, et du coup pas très chaleureux. Les serveurs sont très classes mais pas spécialement aimables.
Au final, peut-​être un peu surévalué.

pour boire une pression a 7 € je prefere de loin un palace qui aura le merite d’avoir
un jardin interieur et des serveurs reactif …
on est la, a se regarder les un les autres en degustant les pots d’echapements des bagnoles d’un coté et l’eglise de st germain des pré de l’autre au milieu des papiers et megots qui jonchent le sol …
des marie chantal, des vieux beaux partout, des touristes blindés (les autres nous mattent en t bouffant leur haggen daz…)
un point positif assez unique dans paris pour un café: une dame pipi qui a l’honneur d’essuyer chaque goutte d’urine qui manqué son objectif …:)

Certainement l’un des café /​restaurant les plus prisés du boulevard Saint-​Germain par les touristes et les parisiens.“chics”… Idéalement placé, de notoriété reconnue et doté d’une jolie carte, on trouve ici de très bonnes choses où l’appetit est également nécéssaire pour le portefeuille. J’ai testé une de leurs salades que je né regretta pas suivie d’un éclair au chocolat sur lequel j’ai longuement hésité en voyant le prix (je le dis pas c’est indescent!). Bref, un service au top, un intérieur impeccable, rien de mieux pour un touriste exigeant !

Le chic parisien a un prix! Un lieu à né pas manquer pour jouer la parisienne trendy.
Un lieu historique, charmant chargé d’histoire. Un moment pour se faire plaisir. on conseille la terrasse.

Le restaurant les Deux Magots était excellent! J’ai bien aimé le magret de canard et le chocolat à l’ancienne.
Le service était bon, considérant que nous sommes à Paris et les prix, mais bon… on est touriste!!!

Saint-​Germain, c’est les Deux Magots. Ces deux noms sont indissociables depuis plus d’un siècle. Tous les grands de la littérature et de la peinture, de la mode et de la politique se sont posés dans cette salle digne d’un musée et qui sert souvent de lieu d’exposition.
C’est un café traditionnel et authentique où l’on se sent très bien, si on a réussi à trouver une place mais votre patience sera récompensée. Une fois assis, le service est impeccable, les serveurs en uniforme de brasserie s’occupe de vous comme il faut: ils vous servent votre verre de vin devant vous en vous présentant la bouteille et le chocolat chaud est fait avec du chocolat (non, ce n’est pas toujours évident) plutôt que de la poudre de cacao.
Je né suis pas fan de la nourriture mais ça reste un incontournable du quartier.

Pariser Flair und leckere Speisen, die zwar ein bisschen überteuert, aber dennoch sehr gut waren.
Wer einmal in Paris ist, sollte hier auch auf jeden Fall vorbeischauen.
