Les Philosophes

A no brainer for a good lunch. It was a bit cold to sit outside so sat inside the bustling atmosphere. I had a quiche Lorraine which though simple was perfect. Service was fast. Close to the Pompidou centre so handy for a break.

This was my second trip to Les Philosphes for breakfast. The food is good, and fresh, the café au lattes are delish, and not over priced like some places. This morning our waiter was on his first day, and he was having a bit of a rough start. He still managed to continually smile at us and check on us, he got our order right and its the only restaurant that I have left a tip in (as its not typical here anyway) but I felt this guy deserved it on his first day. Crazy Holiday Season and they kind of threw him to the wolves and he came out winning. So I am giving it 5 for customer service, but it would be more a 4 for food. The people watching and comfort are defo a 5.

We were walking around the Marais around 2PM and we were hungry and weary on our feet. We had just stopped in the art gallery and asked where to eat and the two gals excitedly pointed to Les Philosophies! Oui Oui Oui!
It was unseasonably warm in Paris this December, about 55 degrees and 80% of the outside tables were full — but outside is were we sat. We squeezed our American sized bodies between the tables and voila, relaxation…
Our waiter was nice, efficient and with a pleasant smile that only lasted as long as he could muster; but this busy place, he had other tables to manage… All good here!
We ordered onion soup — the best so far in Paris (go figure) and the beef bourguignon which was just ok as they used traditional bottom round meat. Now remember, this is a poor man’s meat dish to begin with that was treated with respect to the tradition. I prefer using chuck roast, which while not the traditional meat for this course, is more flavorful. I will say the flavors were all there — it was just not a tender piece of meat but again, not going to get with this cut.
The table around us ordered quiche (looked lovely), sandwiches and veal stew as well. All looked as something delicious!
Overall a great place to rest, eat and people watch. A solid 4**** and if we’re in the area would not hesitate to stop and eat here again!

Voilà un restaurant que j’ai découvert depuis quelques années maintenant!
Tout commence avec un petit déjeuner, dont les croissants sont succulents! Et malgré le voyage que les oranges ont dû endurer, un sucré naturel pour le jus d’oranges pressé! Simplement un bonheur, et particulièrement au printemps, mais alors l’été un paradis! (sauf si vous voulez profitez du soleil et qu’un fumer ou plusieurs prédominent la terrasse comme d’habitude ^_​^) soyez sympas avec les serveurs, sortez du préjugé «le service parisien est à revoir» (certainement ailleurs), vous en recevrez autant de gentillesse !!! Allez-​y produit français, fait maison (certifié) et frais, simplement délicieux, même au déjeuner, et surtout à visiter pour un dîner entre amis ^_^

Wow. I’m surprised that no one tried their Beef Tartar!
You need to order what French people eat there.
If you like rare steak or sushi, you must try this dish at this restaurant.
Have them season it for you and you will love it!
My wife had duck confit and we was very tasty too.

Perfect spot in le marais to people watch and nosh on good food during the late night scene. Secure an outside table and buy your wine by the bottle. Affordable prices and service was friendly, even to us yanks. My spoken French is God awful, but my writing is much better. I asked for a pen and wrote all my communication to my server. Worked like a charm, and he was very patient, even a tad amused. I loved their endive crudités and the plat du jour which was super tender beef, pumpkin purée and leek quiche. After a certain hour, they stop serving a full menu and only offer bites that pair well with their open bar. Smoking allowed on patio (duh) and no one seems to mind. In the middle of everything. Definitely recommended.

Malgré de bons produits, un service «à la parisienne» plus que déplorable: le serveur s’est montré au meilleur de son dédain et de son ironie, refusant par ailleurs de remplir convenablement un sachet de thé. C’est dommage, j’apprécie pourtant leur cuisine.

Terrible food.
Started with the appetizer du jour which was fried calamari (literally five small rings) with some kind of bizarre salad consisting of feta, olives, green beans, onions, and some kind of mustard sauce. It wasn’t bad per se, but it made no sense and the flavors didn’t really go together at all. It was very strange.
Ordered the cheese plate, supposedly an «assortment» of cheese. It actually seemed to be one chunk of brie divided three ways, a wedge of bleu, and a pre-​packaged container of butter. Topped with a pile of arugula and walnuts. The arugula was quite awkward since it covered most of the cheese — which I wanted to put on my bread. The quality of the cheese wasn’t that great, and I didn’t understand why the «assortment» was tricked out by displaying the same cheese in multiple wedges.
The onion soup was also bad. Very weak in flavor, and the cheese was just barely past melting on top, instead of making a nice crust. Couldn’t eat more than a few spoonfuls.
Would not recommend, will not be going back.

Nice bar in a nice area of Paris. Fairly close to the subway.
I personally like the terrace and the cheese cake –whenever they have it!-.

Je n’ai pas encore eu l’occasion de diner aux Philosophes, juste bu quelques verres. Et bien, on s’y sent bien aux Philosophes. La terrasse est sympa, le quartier tout autant, le personnel rapide et efficace. Il faut s’armer de patience pour avoir une table en terrasse en revanche.

I was actually surprised how dissapointed i was in this place. My first meal in Paris, just around the corner from my flat and starving … and still just one word: meh. I would possibly attempt to go back for the plat du fromage or dessert, but my main dish was pretty bland. Nothing to write home about.

While in Paris, I wanted to make sure I got to sample some of the best French dishes in town. Le Marais seemed to have a lot of dining options and I decided to grab some dinner at Les Philosophes since it seemed to have the best boeuf bourguignon in the area. It was super crowded and when I asked for a table for one, they just stuck me at the end of a long table that already had a family group of like 8 people. It was super awkward and they were all speaking in French, probably wondering why the hell is this random guy sitting with them at their table.
That kind of killed the dinner experience for me, so I just tried to focus on the food and get out of there as soon as possible. I ordered the beef bourguignon and French onion soup.
French onion — Man, this was a gigantic bowl of soup. It came out piping hot and actually made me sweat profusely after eating it, purely from the temperature of it. The broth of the soup was super salty and had a bold onion flavor to it. It was topped with a huge layer of cheese and had a couple pieces of bread floating in it soaking up all that flavor. It was an excellent start to the meal.
Beef bourguignon — This was a mixed plate of various veggies and meat. The beef was as tender as you can get and the sauce it came with was just great. It had a very intense, deep flavor from being braised in red wine, and the texture had a meaty thickness almost made it gravy like. There were carrots, broccoli, sauteed mushrooms, and fried sliced potatoes, which all paired great with that rich beef gravy.
Overall, the food was pretty delicious, although the portion of actual beef in the beef bourguignon was a little on the small side. The place was crowded and lively, but probably isn’t a good option if you’re dining alone.

un seul bémol, le service n’est pas très attentionné, les serveurs passent à gauche à droite mais né sont pas à l’écoute de leur clients…

Every time I’m in Paris I go at least once. Their confit de canard, foie and tomatoes torte (their specialty appetizer) are a must for me For dessert crème brûlée.
Never been disappointed !!
Their service friendliness depends on who your server will be.

Not wanting to spend a fortune and yet wanting to sample some French classics, we chose this place for dinner one evening. The Boeuf bourguignon was delicious, the crème brule done to perfection and the wine a very nice complement. Saw lots od locals here. I’d go back.

I went here on a Friday night around 9p, and the only open table was inside, tucked in a corner. This turned out to be ideal because I was next to a lovely Dutch couple who helped me translate the menu. I had the duck and my friend had the lamb. Of the two, the lamb was much better: seasoned perfectly. The duck was a little tough, and the lamb was a little too fatty, but otherwise tasty. Good, solid French food at a reasonable price in perfect neighborhood. Have their apple tart for dessert, but get there early, as it runs out.

Etablissement situe en plein cœur du Marais, terrasse agréable du côté de la petite place.
Restaurant très sympa, l’assiette de charcuterie est top, la salade asiatique excellente!

Head here early to get their homemade savory pies and sweet tarts which sell out early! Classic French flavors throughout. Service is fantastic and it’s in a lovely neighborhood.

Endroit vite prisé car on y mange bien. Très bonnes viandes et leurs menus sont avantageux. Dommage cependant qu’ils soient à court rapidement de certains plats ou desserts en weekend. La carte est variée, les plats copieux et l’ambiance chaleureuse! Essayez le filet de boeuf, sauce au poivre. Délicieux!

Des mets parfaitement préparés (noisettes d’agneau exceptionnelles cuites à la perfection, tartare) alliés à un service irréprochable (petites attentions qui font chaud au cœur). On sort heureux.

Prix assez élevés, pour des plats corrects… C’est surtout très touristique.
On peut trouver des bars/​restaurants beaucoup plus sympas, authentiques dans la rue vieille du temple !

Great place, great service, and a great place to people watch.
I ordered the boeuf bourguignon and it was wonderful. The portion size was on the larger side and would be good to share.
The price was very reasonable, this is a great place to have a casual lunch if you’re out and about in the Marais district of Paris but don’t want to spend all your money on one meal.

Very good food!
They say us in their side room, I did enjoy it was quieter than the main one.

Had a very enjoyable dinner here. Great location and good ambiance for a solid French meal. I enjoyed the duck and my son enjoyed the salmon — both cooked to specifications and tasty as expected. Service was slow but steady on a very busy night. The restaurant was packed when we came. Good place for a nice meal in the Marais district.

Food, service, ambiance…5 stars. This will always be a guaranteed stop and recommendation for Paris trips.
Recommendations:
–Steak tartar, melt in your mouth amazing. Suttee task of onion, capers, horse radish, and parsley made it so tasty but still all about the meat

Beaucoup de monde mais le serveur nous trouve rapidement une petite table en terrasse en dessous de la lampe chauffante. Peu de circulation de voiture dans la rue, et côté zone piétonne encore mieux.
Formule du midi à 18 €, du cerf avec tagliatelle et du pain perdu en dessert. Avec un petit pichet de rouge. On a super bien mangé. Les quantités petites mais quelle qualité. Les viandes ont bien mijoté, ça sent les épices et c’est tendre. Je né suis pas trop sucré mais le pain perdu était simplement excellent. Service rapide, discret, efficace et aimable.
Malgré le rush toute l’équipe fait le maximum pour que chacun soit bien, et c’est le cas !
Une petite étoile en moins pour le manqué de tagliatelles dans le plat, c’est un tout petit peu léger si on né prend pas d’entrée.
Mais je recommande vivement !

Les philosophes c’est le choix «simple» par excellence.

Un gran restaurante con una larga historia, y aunque comimos genial y agradezco a Unilocal la recomendación, lo encontré algo sobrevalorado, por eso mi puntuación es de cuatro estrellas. Los camareros andaban un poco agitados, pero la comida fue excepcional. No me podía ir de París in tomar el pato, así que fue mi opción, pero el tartar de la mesa de al lado tenía una pinta maravillosa. Recomendable y algo carete, pero bueno, París es París.

Mi restaurante preferido!!! El canard es magnífico y los camareros son muy atentos. Lo mejor de París.

Wir geben gerne viel Geld für gute Leistungen aus, aber dieses Lokal ist gnadenlos überteuert.

Onion soup was not as wonderful and flavorful as I was anticipating. It was ok onion soup. We ordered one of the specials of the day with duck and I know that this is crazy but seriously the duck taste just like a steak. I thought that was the most wasteful thing someone can do to a piece of good duck breast.

I understand that Europeans have different service standards but it was pretty bad service even for Europe. It seems that they were lacking staffs because lunch took more than 2 hours and most of it was waiting to take our orders, get our wine, and our check.

This place is what I’d define as solid, home-​cooked, fresh, traditional with a slight modern flair to bistro fare. We really enjoyed our meal here, even though we had to wait a good 45 minutes for a table. During that time, we got to see all the beautiful dishes coming out, and it gave us ideas on what to get!
We ended up sharing a few plates, and they were all really good, with the exception of my pavé rumsteak. Although it had a wonderful flavor and seasoning, it was just a little on the tough side. Not so much that it was unbearable, but it could have been better. Husband’s salmon was definitely the star of the night. Perfectly cooked a medium rare so that it flaked off easily and was moist when you bit into it. The sauce was amazing, and the frites and vegetables that came with it complemented it nicely. The boeuf bourguignon was mouthwatering tender, to which the monsieur told us «good choice,» and had the perfect amount of sauce without being heavy.
My soupe du jour was a courgette with roasted garlic on top and it was a satisfying start to our meal.
All across the board, the portions were right on, and not too much and not too little. It could have been a little less for my tastes, but I left satisfied. :)
To round out the meal, we shared a mousse au chocolat, which was tasty but nothing remarkable. Probably should have picked a different dessert.
Final bill after 3 dishes, soupe, dessert, and a glass of wine came out to be around 75 €. Service was excellent, given the chaos that was going on. The space is not big (typical in Paris, and specifically in the Marais neighborhood), but they turn over tables at a pretty good rate. The monsieurs that run this place have pretty good English, but it doesn’t hurt to have a little bit of French under your belt. Not a ton, but just a little.
Definitely come check this place out, because it’s in a great spot, and you will be guaranteed fresh, home-​cooked bistro food!

J’ai beaucoup hésité avant d’entrer dans ce repaire de touristes et pourtant… le dos de cabillaud à la sauce saté était plutôt original et savoureux. La compote normande, bien qu’ayant un peu trop de crème fraîche à mon goût, était tout de même délicieuse.
Le prix reste tout de même toujours élevé pour ce genre d’endroit mais avec le menu plat et dessert, on peut s’en sortir à 27 euros.
Quant au service, il né faut pas être trop pressé mais ça laisse le temps d’observer la salle et les gens qui déambulent dans les rues du Marais depuis la terrasse.

On y vente quelques trucs bio et fermiers, mais encore faut il les cuisiner correctement. Une entrée rillettes de saumon minable et un dessert gâteaux normand moins bon que ceux de toutes les mères.

Nous y sommes allés pour boire un verre en fin d’après midi.
Nous étiez assis en terrasse à cote d’étranger entourés de bouteilles, beaucoup de bruit et nous étions très serrés.
Passez votre chemin…

Juste la meilleure tarte tatin de Paris.
A réserver avant même de demander une table. C’est dire.
Ah, et les serveurs ont toujours le sourire. En plein Marais. Dingue !

Vraiment bonne cuisine MAISON rien d’artificiel … ! Superbe ! Le service est super avec un serveur anglais totalement génial. Excellent ! … A refaire …

Un restaurant à conseiller!
Un de mes restaurant préféré. Tout y est bon, l’ambiance, la cuisine, les serveurs. Et même le temps d’attente y est agréable: On nous propose d’aller dans une petit bar à vin juste en face, et on vient nous chercher quand la table est prête. Non, vraiment ce restaurant est ce qui se rapproche le plus de la perfection à mes yeux !

Je n’y ai pas mangé. Juste pris un verre. Service rapide et un peu speed. Mais bon, y a foule surtout quand il fait beau et chaud!
Apparemment l’endroit est réputé pour ses produits frais et l’absence de plats déjà préparés comme dans beaucoup de bistrots aujourd’hui.
J’y retournerai pour y manger.

Bön alors nous on vient de Nice, alors la terrasse qui donne dans la rue Moyen, mais y’a un angle qui donne sur un bout de piétonne. On était à l’intérieur.
Sinon, ambiance intérieure sympa un peu typique Parisienne.
Question miam, ça se veut intégriste du frais et du pas congelé.
Tu leur parles de Brake tu prends un carton, moi je suis à fond pour que tous les restos qui font appel à ces industries soient référencés quelque part, sinon c’est qu’ils en ont honte. Donc un bon point à ce resto qui né veut pas en entendre parler et qui le revendique haut et fort.
Anyway, on a déjeuné là bas, c’était très bien, pas excessif comme prix donc je colle 4*
Entrée et plat du jour à 17EUR, avec le dessert 24. Le plat était très copieux, mais pas stylé gros sabots à en mettre plein dans l’assiette mais de piètre qualité, c’était bon.

Deux amies de New York de passage à Paris, un bar à trouver pour s’asseoir, un samedi après midi bondé dans le Marais. Il né m’en fallait pas plus pour me dépêcher de m’asseoir à la 1ère table libre, et c’était Aux Philosophes.
Pas si mal Les Philosophes. A force de penser que c’est un de ces cafés à touristes du Marais, je n’y avais jamais mis un pied.
Le service est à peu près aussi pressé que mon jus de carotte mais pas forcément trop désagréable. Enfin je marche toujours sur des oeufs avec ce genre de serveurs: on sent qu’ils peuvent avoir leurs bons et leurs mauvais jours quoie (c’est fou quand même non d’en arriver à «prendre des pincettes» avec des serveurs… Mais ça, c’est Paris !)
PART ONE: 1ère boisson, jus de carotte. Très bien, frais, goutu, grand.
PART TWO: 2ème boisson, bière– né pas chercher de logique. Fraîche, à la terrasse chauffée.
La table à la terrasse, donnant sur la rue: parfaite.
Donc dans l’ensemble j’ai trouvé que c’était une bonne option dépannage dans le Marais.

Hier habe ich mit Abstand den schlechtesten Service erlebt!
Der Kellner konnte gar nicht damit umgehen, dass ich nur bruchstückhaft Französisch sprach. Er selbst war Brite und ging mit meinen Englischversuchen
ebenso wenig konstruktiv um. Stattdessen führte er uns bei den anderen Gästen lauthals vor und wiederholte unsere scheinbar falschen Formulierungen. Es endete damit, dass wir unsere Bestellung wütend zurückzogen und gingen.
Ich habe selber schon im Service gearbeitet und es wäre mir im Traum nicht einfallen, so mit Gästen umzugehen. Dieser Kellner jedoch pflegte lieber sein theatralisches Ego, statt seinen Job zu machen. Schade für das Restaurant.
Aber ein Haus weiter gibt es ein anderes Restaurant und dort waren wir dann sehr zufrieden und kamen auch sprachlich irgendwie klar…

Dans la rue Vieille du Temple, au niveau de la rue de Rivoli, il y a une brochette de restos qui appartiennent tous au même propriétaire et proposent à peu près la même carte.
J’ai testé les Philosophes avec des amis, et c’était plutôt sympa, même si j’avais un a priori sur ces restaurants qui me semblent surtout des attrape-​touristes. Je né trouve pas l’endroit très chaleureux, mais ce n’était pas mauvais et le service était rapide.
Au final, c’était un peu cher ce que c’était (les assiettes né sont pas très remplies), mais c’est une bonne solution quand on est dans le coin et qu’on a pas de plan pour dîner.
