My husband and I ate here on a trip to Paris and loved it. The meal was super memorable, especially the cheese plate. The service was warm and friendly; somewhat unusual for the French. The ambiance was quirky and charming and the crowd was a mix of French and American patrons. Would recommend!!!

Our first dinner in Paris. The cheese plate alone earns this spot five stars. I mean, they bring this amazing assortment of cheeses to your table at the end of dinner and let you dive in. I had some of the most amazing cheeses ever. This is basically a French cheese primer on a tray. Everything else we had was also great and a perfect fit for how we were feeling. Just nice enough to be a great first dinner but not so stuffy that our jet-lagged bodies felt like we had to be uncomfortable. Our server was really friendly and helpful. The only negative was the group of super loud and picky Americans next to us that helped us understand why we have a bad name in France sometimes!

We came here during one of Paris’ holidays: La Fête de la Musique(Festival of Music). There was a live jazz band playing outside in the street during our meal, which was very cool, and a nice beginning to a night of strolling the city listening to random bands. I had the cockerel(rooster) with lima beans, tomatoes, and olives. This is probably one of the best chickens I’ve ever eaten. Husband had braised pork. The star was the cheese plate; they brought out a huge platter of cheeses, from which we could choose what we wanted.

I went back and forth between 4 and 5 stars for this one(I really wish Unilocal would have half star options for reviews!!!). I eventually settled on 4 because this is Paris after all. As amazing as my meal was, you can find even better in Paris. Anyway, on to the real substance of the review. Astier is in the 11th arrondissement, a charming and hip part of town with lots and lots of great restaurants. You could dine exclusively in the 11th and be very happy for a very long time. I picked Astier based off Patricia Well’s recommendation in her awesome book, The Food Lover’s Guide to Paris. She highlights basically how much you would expect to pay at each restaurant, and since I was aiming to spend a little less this particular evening, Astier seemed the perfect candidate. It’s a charming enough restaurant with a slight«classic Paris» feel to it. Homey. Quaint. But still nice. Tables are kind of packed in(we were slightly uncomfortably close to the guests next to us but luckily they were very nice). Some diners, particularly those who like classic Paris bistrots like Chez Georges and other might find this charming, some might find this annoying. I was pretty neutral on it. On to the food. You can order whatever you want, but they have a great deal where for 45 euro, you can get one starter, one entrée, cheese plate, and a dessert, but not all the options are permitted to you. These items by themselves would tally closer to 60 – 80 euro, so this is a great deal. I got the pork shoulder for my starter, the halibut for my entrée and a rum baba cake for my dessert. My friend got a goat dish for his starter, half-a-chicken for his entrée and a pistachio-based dessert that is pretty hard to describe haha(it was also likely the best thing we were served). My favorite thing I ordered was the pork shoulder. Perfectly cooked, and prepared in a classic French style. Truly special and extremely satisfying. My friend’s goat dish was almost like spam in consistency — but shockingly delicious and very well-paired. My halibut was of course well-prepared, fresh, and tasty, but nothing extraordinary. My friend’s chicken, however, was masterful. I was quite jealous. It was beautifully prepared, and exceptionally high quality meat. More importantly to me was the delicious and fresh vegetables the chicken was paired with. A classic and nutritious meal. If the meal had stopped there, we would have likely felt fresh and light. However, next comes the cheese plate. I have mixed feelings on this tradition, but Astier undoubtedly nailed it. It was quite confusing to us capitalist Americans; they bring you a giant cheese plate and you can cut off however much you want. I was under the impression that, if physically possible, I could have eaten 4 pounds of cheese and they wouldn’t have stopped me. Truly strange, but truly delicious. We ate amazing cheeses, ranging from delicate to sharp, young to old, creamy to hard, until we felt near sick. This is part of what makes Astier really special. We bought a bottle of wine with dinner, a delicious red from cote-de-Rhones, but were more intoxicated from the cheese than the booze by the end of our meal. Last came dessert, where my jealousy of my friend peaked. His pistachio based dessert is hard to describe, but was one of, if not THE, best dessert I’ve ever tasted. Unfortunately, I only could steal two bites from him haha. The waitress had said how good the baba rum cake was(«Best in Paris») so I got it. And… maybe I just don’t get it, but it was really weird and unenjoyable. I’ve had rum-based desserts before, of course, but every one I’ve ever had has the rum cooked down. This dessert was literally just a plain cake that the waiter then dumped about 4 shots of rum on top of. Every bite took as much mustering to stomach as an actual shot of hard liquor. Very strange, and a terrible ending to the meal. I truly got drunk off my dessert, which was not my intention. Had I not been so sedated by the cheese, I likely would have sent it backed and asked for a pistachio dessert, but the thought didn’t cross my mind as I’m not a very rude diner. All in all, a classic Parisian experience that is well worth your time.

Quite a nice place to go for dinner, but make a reservation. Once you’re in, it’s a quaint little dining room that gives the feel of coming home to mom’s kitchen. The wait staff is pleasant and accommodating. The food, succulent. We did a tasting menu without the giant cheese plate. It’s been too long to recall our menu choices off the prix fixe menu, but it was quite nice. It’s a must if you’re visiting.

Our time in Paris was less than satisfying but our last night, last meal here left me on a high note. This place is just amazing. We were looking for a real french bistro and this place delivered. I won’t go into details but please make your way here for the prix fix and have fun with the owners. This is one little sliver of Paris that should not be missed.

I have mixed feelings about my third meal at Astier. It’s easy to make a reservation online via their website. The interior is cozy and classic, in an interesting neighborhood. The cheese plate is ample, but I would have preferred an introduction to each type of cheese. Unfortunately, the menu is sorely lacking vegetarian options; my serving of butternut squash was thin and the shredded cabbage was tough, but the bread was excellent. The wine list is extensive and the desserts ample. Service was congenial. I’m not sure if I would return, but carnivores and cheese lovers could consider Astier for a pleasant meal.

French cuisine… lamb, veal, pork loin, rabbit, dock confit. Don’t go expecting an american like experience. Good was very good, if that is your taste. Cheese plate is enormous and amazing. Had the pork loin and it was delicious. Lots of meat. Another in my party had scallops and enjoyed them. Dessert looked amazing… brioche and other, but we were too stuff. Service is normal for France, but ‘slow’ by US standards. Of course, plenty of bread is served.

This is the Parisian bistro experience I was looking for and it was absolutely perfect. Our hotel made our booking and when we walked in a bit late, the maitre’d happily greeted us and seated us at our cozy saved table, complete with its own chalkboard menu. Our waitress was so friendly and pleasant and we settled into a couple of kirs while enjoying Madeleine Peyroux(she’s one of my faves!). I ordered poached eggs over winter root vegetables and the braised beef cheeks. Those eggs… wow. They were the best I’ve ever had in my entire life and the mushrooms and root vegetables paired with them were just heavenly. It was a true«balanced» Parisian dish that I hope to replicate some day, but I doubt I can. Those eggs had the most yellow yolk — absolutely gorgeous. I loved that the braised beef cheeks came to me tableside in their coquette. They came with romaine leaves, potatoes, and pearl onions. It wasn’t the best beef bourguignon that I’ve ever had(Bouchon in Vegas gets that’s honor!), but it was so good and homey, and after a few days of sublimely rich meals, it was just what I wanted. Hubby had pigeon, which was delish! The maitre’d helped us select a red wine that went perfectly with our mains. Ask for help — they’re so friendly here! We did go for the cheese, and a selection of their«greatest hits» were provided to us. Yum yum yum. Finally, I setlled on the lemon tart for dessert. Absolute perfection. I’m still thinking of it now. From start to finish, this was the perfect Parisian bistro experience. The service was friendly and stellar, the ambience was cozy(think small spot, café curtains, small tables, Madeleine Peyroux/Frank Sinatra playing), and the food excellent but not over-the-top. I will forever think about it when I think about dining in Paris and I hope I get to return some day! I will note that I had instant order envy when I saw a filet mignon with a beautiful sliver of foie gras pass my table. OMG, I’m still kicking myself for not getting it! Oh well, just another reason to return to Paris!

We were looking for an upscale place that could handle a party of 6 without a reservation(not the best plan) on a summer night in Paris. After striking out at a few other places, Astier was able to seat us. It turned out to be a fantastic choice, a reasonably priced and unpretentious corner restaurant. I started with a Kir, while the rest of my family chose wine or beer. The cheese tray making the rounds of neighbouring tables looked fantastic, but we had somewhat overdosed on cheese at that point, so we skipped it. I started with a pickled herring appetizer, and was somewhat surprised when a large terrine densely layered with pickled fish was deposited in front of me. Like the generous cheese tray, apparently this was also just taken from table to table as needed. Nonetheless, the herring was tasty. My entrée was a pan seared mackerel in a spicy tomato sauce, which was pretty good. Also tried a bite of the salmon, also very good. For dessert I had a mixed berry dish that was quite sweet, but balanced the savory dishes I’d started with quite well. All in all, Astier is definitely a place I’d recommend for dining in the Oberkampf /Parmentier area. The menu rotates, but based on what I saw it would be hard to go wrong.

Charming bistro. A bit lacking on the atmosphere(no music, your grandmother’s tablecloths and plates) but pleasant service and French classics done to a tee. Get the baba au rhum! Go for seasonal specials, avoid the red meat disappointment trap that Americans typically fall into. Get the cheese plate.

I was in dire need of a place for a large group(7 of us) on a Monday night in August… Astier came up trumps and I had high expectations as I love their other places(Jeanne A, Jeanne B and Café Moderne). To be honest I was not that impressed by Astier. The service started off kind and efficient but dropped off as the place became busy and we waited almost 20 mins to order our desserts, despite catching the waitresses eye and indicating we were ready multiple times. The food was decent, uncomplicated French fare but nothing to write home about — probably the most stand out dish is their very impressive cheeseboard which they deliver to the middle of the table and you help yourself(be warned they are hawk-eyed about those who have not ordered cheese sampling!). All in all what made my evening was the company not the lacklustre service and only-OK food. Don’t think I’d go back except if I was in another ‘Monday in August’ type bind again… But do go check out Jeanne A, Jeanne B and Café Moderne, all of which are stellar.

We went on a whim for lunch and were not disappointed. The fixed price menu is fabulously cheap and the food is impeccable. What’s more, the service is top-notch, a rare commodity in Paris. The royale de foie gras is truly memorable and generous. I also tried a wonderful dos de maigre with a sauce of mussels. My companion had a wonderful lamb roast. If I lived in the area, I’d go every weekend.

Food: **Herring in oil, potatoes with aioli **Rabbit and pig foot terrine **Steak and potatoes **Some fish **Shrimp, Spanish style It was all good. We got gringo’d a little bit — there’s this great cheese tray/stand that they pass around, and I guess it’s 1 at a time. Well I asked for it before the dessert but she was like, no way, dessert first. It’s not the worst thing that ever happened to a guy — dessert before cheese — I understand… Space is cramped, but a really great classic bistro vibe. Dinner for 2 adults &2 kids was around 150EUR.

****Astier’s MOP(Meal in One Pic)**** ***************************************** 4.5 stars. Close-by to the Trendy bars and restaurants of Oberkampf, Astier presents Traditional French dishes, and desserts extremely well executed. 33 euros Appetizer-Main-Dessert 39 euros Appetizer-Main-Cheese Platter-Dessert The menu changes frequently and features classics from every region of France. Make sure to have a reservation as the place is crowded. Every dish has its dedicated sauce that complements so well the protein on the plate. It is comforting and satisfying. All the dishes emanates warmth, and coziness. The portions are generous. The cheese platter is massive. It has over 12 entire cheeses(not tiny pieces like you see in LA). There is One platter for the entire restaurant and it is place on your table, Yes ON your table for as long as you want when it is cheese course time(which is Before dessert time). It is really traditional to have the platter passing around the table as it is exactly what is done in French homes. We tried: Bisque Soup with crab meat Simple seafood broth with a small mound of fresh and cold white crab mea in the middle. The soup was full of flavor but not too fishy. Great small portion for an appetizer. Oeuf Mollet and Pork Belly. Oeuf Mollet is a slow cooked egg. The yolk is a little bit more cooked than a poached egg but is still running. The white is firmer as the egg is cooked in the shell. This egg was also poached in red wine, and topped caramelized onions and pork belly. It is basically a Umami combo without cheese. The creamy egg running on the sweet onions and tender pork infused in red wine melts in your mouth. An unctuous way to start the meal. Veal Risotto and endives Barley risotto with caramelized endives and veal cooked to a beautiful pink color. An amazing dish. Navarin Navarin is a lamb stew with vegetables. It comes in a pot. It has parsnips, potatoes, leeks, carrots, tomatoes, onions in a beef and vegetables broth. The meat was tender and tasty. All the veggies were packed with the flavors from the broth. A good dish. Rabbit Delicious. Served with carrots and cabbages, the rabbit was soft and juicy. The sauce was wonderful and every bite was pure joy. The seasoning was perfect. Pets de Nonne A classic done well. This dessert’s name translates into nun’s farts. It is appropriate as it is small donut balls made with Pâté a Choux on custard with hot chocolate(from a tiny pot) poured over. A delicous and really sweet dessert. The dough was perfectly fried, and was still soft to the palate. Red Wine Pear Tart A good pear tart. Great dessert. Pineapple Dessert Beautiful and colorful dessert of cooked pineapple with a biscuit in a red berries juice. Chocolate and griottes Griottes are cherries in alcohol. This chocolate cake features them on top and inside. The quality of the chocolate was good and was not too sweet. The texture of the cake was great. Double MOP for this place with a dessert MOP. Disclaimer: This place is great and I would like to avoid sending them the«wrong customers» .Most of the items on the menu are icons of French cuisine. Most of the words on the menu will be foreign. Don’t think a dictionary will help you. If you are on a special diet or not an adventurous eater please avoid bothering the staff by coming and making their work more difficult. If you do not eat Rabbit, Veal, Lamb, Foie Gras, etc, it is not your place. The tables are also extremely close to each other. There is really no room for movement. Claustrophobic please avoid. If you can cope with all the above you will experience one of the best meal you can get in the 11th arrondissement of Paris.

Our wonderful concierge recommended this restaurant for dinner. If it hadn’t Bern for him we would have missed this hidden gem of a restaurant. You must get a reservation. They had to turn away lots of people while we were here! They have a very reasonable prix fix which changes daily according to what the chef buys from the market. This is not a tourist restaurant and was filled with locals! What a wonderful dining experience! They have a tremendously large wine list! One of the best I have ever come across in a tiny restaurant in Paris. The house made foie gras is not to be missed. Also they have a huge steak for two that will make your mouth water uncontrollably. This restaurant features many Alsatian standards too. Service was warm and friendly. One of my favorite dishes was the slow cooked pork cheeks in sauerkraut. Melted in my mouth. If you are staying anywhere near the 10th arr. then this is not to be missed.

A casual French bistro with a decently priced prix fixe, serving good French food with friendly service. For my first visit there for lunch, I decided to order the dishes they were known for and started with the seared foie gras with apples as an appetizer. It was pretty good, although not necessarily the most delicious foie gras I’ve had. The foie gras was perfectly cooked, but the apple didn’t quite provide the nice balance of sweetness to cut through the richness of the liver. For my main course I had the fish with leeks, a beautiful sauce, all topped with a sliced oven-dried tomato with a delicious concentrated flavor. The fish was cooked beautifully with crisp skin, and the flavor combination was very nice. Lastly, I had the egg custard a l’ancienne for dessert, with vanilla bean. It had a nice smooth texture that was firm toward the top and gradually melted into a soft pudding-like texture on the bottom. I also liked that it wasn’t too sweet. Portions were a little larger than I expected so I was quite full at the end but I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.
