Really excellent food in Clifden. The pub is unassuming on the outside, but large and inviting inside. Great pint of Guinness and quality food. The seafood chowder was well above average — salty, thick, creamy and chock full of fresh mussels and fish. I really enjoyed it. We also had one of the specials on the menu — pan-seared trout with curried risotto. I’ve never had such lovely trout before. It tasted more on the salmon side… definitely more rich than I remember this fish being before. At any rate, it was cooked to perfection, something that cannot be applauded enough. Fish is tough to cook, even for high brow establishments, so the fact that this pub cooked it perfectly is testament to the fact that you should eat here. Service was so-so but it was quite crowded. Pleasant, excellent food and conveniently located in town. Some nice trad musicians kept us entertained in the early evening. We didn’t check the pub out later in the night, so I can’t comment on the mood then, but I can vouch that they have a great kitchen and a decent pint.

On the very 1st time I went to visit Ireland, and specially Connemara, as I was looking for a something to eat, not too expensive, I decided to go to E. J Kings. I found there a large choice of sandwiches, salads, alot of delicious things. There was also a traditionnal Irish band playing live on stage =) But, above all: a warm welcome from staff !!! That made THE difference ! Since that day, I returned many times to Connemara, and each time, I chose to go to Kings ! I recommend it to visitors ;o)

We needed something small to eat. So E.J.King’s sandwiches were a great offer. We ordered and about 15 minutes later we got our food(1 salad, 3 sandwiches, 1 portion of fries). Personally I couldn’t enjoy my meal. We had a table right next to the toilets and whenever somebody opened the door a distinctive smell came out of the toilet area. The sandwiches were — boring. It was nicely served, with salad and crisps, but I would have prefered the salad IN the sandwhich and not next to it. 3 stars because the interior was nice and the staff as well.

Indeed, this is one of the second most enjoyable places in the world. The owner and all of his employees are so helpful and cordially, that i’m about to call this place a second living room. There is a place full of warmth — and some great whiskeys, of course. But before you taste the traditional irish gold, you might first start with tea and scones, some nice dishes from the plentyful bar menue and then a pint of guinness, or two… And if you’re really lucky, you will enjoy Sean D. Halpenny and his amasing band Glòr live on stage!
