Lowry’s Bar

The most popular pub in Clifden. It’s just quintessential Irish pub from the décor on the wall to the cheeky regulars to the John Skelton art on the walls. One of my favourite John Skelton paintings is a wonderful depiction called, «Aran Pintmen.» Look it up and tell me if you don’t think there’s just something arresting about it: bright eyes, tweed caps, cupped Guinnesses, innocent faces. A reprint of this painting hangs at Lowry’s Bar and immediately endeared me to the place.
The menu here is pithy but sweet. We tried the smoked salmon panini, filled with wonderful fresh offerings from the Connemara smokehouse. Can you ever have too much freshly smoked salmon? The answer is probably yes… but it’s still brilliant. The panini was perfectly balanced, with some rich crème fraîche carefully balancing out each salty bite of the tender salmon. Our pints of Guinness were fresh and the regulars at the bar were entertaining. My only regret is that I drank too much Guinness and lost too much sleep in County Clare to allow me the experience of a proper night of music and craic at Lowry’s. My loss.

A bar that is only present to rip off tourists. Drinks are overpriced and service is minimal.

Prices on spirits are far too high compared to pubs in nearby towns… not surprising, perhaps, given the number of b&bs and hostels off the main square alone. Still, it might have been nice to pay an honest price for an honest drink

Ein sehr schöner Pub, den wir eigentlich nur enterten, weil er nicht allzuweit von unserer
Unterkunft, Foyles Hotel entfernt lag. Eine Ambiente wie aus dem Bilderbuch. Die Wände aren mit dunklem Holz verkleidet. Große Spiegel mit Werbung für diverse geistige Getränke.
Ein großer Wandspiegel mit der Werbung für Midleton Whiskey hatte es mir besonders
angetan.
Selbstverständlich war dieses Pub gut besucht, auch von Touristen. Trotzdem waren auch
sehr viele Einheimische anwesend, mit denen man in dieser gemütlichen Atmosphäre sehr
leicht in Gespräch kam. Die Auswahl an Bieren und an Whiskey ist sehr groß. Und obwohl
Clifden auch mehr oder weniger zu den Touristenzentren zählt, waren die Preise moderat.
Zumindest während der Saison gibt es dort fast jeden Abend Livemusic. Irish Trad vom Feinsten. Aber die Musiker die her auftreten sind keine Profis. Zumindest an dem Abend,
als wir uns im Lowrys aufhielten, spielten Hobbymusiker. Der Genuß war deshalb nicht
geringer. Was die Musik betrifft, erlebten wir hier das ursprüngliche Irland.
Die Bedienung ist sehr freundlich und zuvorkommend. Entgegen den in dieser Beziehung üblichen Usancen in irischen Pubs, in denen man nicht am Tisch bedient wird, sondern
die Getränke selbst an der Bar abholte, wurde mir geholfen, als ich den Transport einer
Lage nicht bewältigen konnte. Einer der zwei Barkeeper half mir beim Tragen.
Dieser Pub kann nur wärmsens empfohlen werden.

Great place! Stopped in here after a lovely dinner at the Derryclare, precisely because we walked by earlier in the day and saw Lowry’s window displaying Redbreast 15! So we shared a Redbreast 15 and a Jura, both of which were phenomenal and of course quite different from each other. Redbreast 15 is superb.
We arrived before it became crowded and had a comfortable seat near the entrance. A music session was just starting as well, giving it an even nicer atmosphere. Would defnitely return here next time we’re in Clifden.
A very nice spot for a nightcap or more!

In Lowry‘s Bar ist in der Saison fast an jedem Abend Tradionelle Irish Musik. Das Pub ist auch immer bestens gefüllt.
Die Bedienungen sind freundlich und auch zuvorkommend.
