Great fresh sandwiches and cakes. Very friendly staff. Get there early as when gone it’s gone because it’s so nice

I’m in love with the toasted sandwiches here. They serve on gorgeous thick crusty bread and stuff it whatever you want. That washed down with a pot of tea is close to heaven. It’s a shame about the décor though… it used to be a cozy, bright, country-style place with brick walls but now in a strange attempt to look modern, it’s become dark, dull and slightly depressing with no soul at all. I hope one day it’ll turn back into the welcoming cottage it used to be but I still love you Bracken’s!

BRACKENSCAFE Found myself in Paul Street the other morning around coffee time and went in, through the half-door, to Bracken’s Café. Up to the counter where I was greeted with a smile and served efficiently but with time for some small talk. The two rooms have a floor in black stone slabs. Rather unusual. The rest is relatively basic with some pictures on the walls and a large mirror also. Windows and doors were open and it was nice and comfortable on quite a warm morning. Tables and chairs were solid and comfortable. The coffee was nothing more nothing less than regular and the scone was quite good and I enjoyed the little break. Cost € 3.60. Passed Luigi Malone’s a few minutes later and saw that their coffee and scone costs € 3.90.

I hovered over the 3 stars and then my heart made me give a 4. Brackens was somewhere I often took refuge in when I was in college and it still has a comforting air about it. It tends to be packed and you’ll often struggle to get a table. It’s often smoky inside from toasting sandwiches… but it’s homely and welcoming for all that. They do tasty sandwiches on huge slices of freshly baked bread and a toasted sandwich from here is very tummy friendly indeed. I think I overdosed on their cakes while living in Cork-the Centra up the road also stocked them-but I’d still manage to devour one of their chocolate slices or the lovely chocolate log they do. Mmmm. Chocolate log… Staff are generally friendly and the prices are reasonable. They’re generous when they cut slices of cake too. You won’t go hungry! Unfortunately I’m feeling quite peckish thinking about it though…
