Late night bar which tends to have live music on Sunday nights which are well worth checking out. Great that it stays open a bit later.

With such a large student population, it’s no surprise that Cork contains a large number of pubs which cater for students. However, students can be loud, messy and — if you’re not in the mood — frankly quite irritating. Which is where the trend for specifically non-student pubs has arisen, and one of the best of these is The Slate. With a strictly-enforced over-23s policy on the door, it’s the ideal place for a student-free evening, and so caters largely for the twenty-and thirty-somethings who want to go to a pub where it’s possible to converse at a normal volume with the people you came with, instead of shouting ineffectually over pumping noise and avoiding drunken students. With its cosy red interior, excellent range of quality international beers(I particularly liked the beer flavoured with tequila and lime) and low-key ambient music, The Slate has fast emerged as one of the best mid-week or early-evening pubs in Cork city — truly a pub where it’s possible to go for a «quiet one» or two.
