I hadnt been here for years and years and years. My sister and husband are home visiting from Australia and this was there local so they are on a trip down memory lane. Hence we have been here several times in the last month. Enough to give more than a one off review. The staff are great. They really know their product and will upsell and do their best to get you the best of what they have. That said, the price is not competitive. 8.50 for a Gin and tonic is ridiculously steep. They location is great and if you parking is available in the daytime normally. At night it was impossible to find parking as everyone was home. That isnt the fault of the pub however, Im must mentioning it. Will I go back? well I wont make a special trip but if I was in the area and someone wanted to go I wouldnt be opposed to it, but in general the spark has gone and the charm it once held isnt so strong anymore.

Great old man pub in ranelagh. A refreshing change of pace from smyths and mcsorelys. Great pint of Guinness too. Tiny smoking area but there’s always the street!

Great Guinness. It’s probably the only pub I’d venture to for the black stuff in Ranelagh.

on the way back from college I got drownded by the rain so headed in here to ‘warm up’. Old school wooden bar with nice mix of ages at the bar, nicer mix of beers on display in the fridges including some imports which are a nice change from the usual muck. Excellent bar staff see you from the corner of the bar and come rushing to greet you with excellent manners and more importantly an excellently pulled beer. It’s only while sitting, when the warming glow kicks in, that you notice the class touches that make this bar stand out — stained glass everywhere, vintage clocks above doorways, old prints advertising bygone railways and the ever important scrupulously clean toilets which are fortunately the only modern distractions. maybe, just maybe the beer could have been a wee bit cheaper but even on a Wednesday night the bar is nicely full of people of all ages not complaining.

Jack Birchalls is just lovely. Everything about it is great. It’s a pub that has no music, you can hear yourself think and hear others speak. It does have TVs for sport and it’s a great place to watch a rugby game. The staffing setup is old school. The men are behind the bar and the floor staff are female. All extremely well dressed and very polite, but with a warm smile. The décor makes it the perfect pub, from the warm creamy gold wallpaper to the comfy seats that run along the wall. The toilets are nice too. Its win win win on any visit to Birchalls of Ranelagh.

Probably my favourite pub in Ranelagh. It’s small and quiet, there is no background music, the pints are cheap and you get table service. The décor is quite quirky, with old books on a shelf along one wall and a drawn picture of Oscar Wilde on another. The couches are very comfy and even on a Saturday night it’s not too busy. It’s right across the road from McSorley’s and it’s more or less the exact opposite– in a good way. There was mostly older people there, less of the young crowd but if it’s a quiet drink and a chat you’re after this place is perfect.
