Recommended by a friend but beyond disappointing. Ordered Singapore noodles for take-out and what I received was absolutely terrible. Oily, flavourless, and practically no meat. Having paid € 12, it was almost comical! I’ve got Singapore noodles in some dodgy, cheap places, but this was as bad as I’ve come across.

The food, interior, staff and attention to detail are great, and the 3 courses for 24 euro is great value. best chinese in Ranelagh/Rathmines

Have been meaning to try Wong’s food for a while now but couldn’t have been more disappointed. The food was tasteless, under cooked. They gave me a free calendar though!

Wongs in Ranelagh was my first experience of Chinese food and as such I hold it dear to my heart. In fact, when I think about it Wongs might be partially responsible for my compulsion to travel around China a few years ago. Maybe it’s the fact that, inside Wongs it is mysterious and inky dark with tables concealed behind Oriental diptych screens and everything is painted, as Henry Ford intended: shiny black. Presumably trying to give you a little taste of Shanghai back in the swinging twenties. The tables have those quintessentially Chinese, circular, spinning glass centres, so a group can order a wide selection of food and share it. I suppose this type of Oriental theatrics has been overtaken by teppan grills and conveyor belt sushi these days, but it still adds a little verve to an evening out, The food is basically standard Chineser fare but it is really well prepared and comes with elaborate designs carved into the veggies. Personally, I always go for the Peking duck or the chicken in blackbean sauce. The food also travels well and is available for delivery at a price that is no more unreasonable than any other take-away, factor in that it’s really good food, and you’ve got a winner. So three stars for Wongs of Ranelagh for being a really solid and slightly above average Chinese restaurant, and two removed for lacking a little wow factor in it’s traditional menu.

I’ve almost completely gone off Chinese food since the introduction of Thai, Indian, Asian fusion etc… but, Wong’s is the only place to go if you want a Chinese meal. This restaurant is an old Ranelagh establishment with attentive staff, real old-school Chinese restaurant interior(black everywhere) and a huge menu. The crispy shredded beef is so tasty as is the old reliable sweet and sour chicken. I like them with noodles instead of rice. They also have big round tables with the plate in the middle to spin around for sharing, so it’s great for a gang. Wong’s is the only Chinese restaurant I’d consider if I had the urge for it.
