For instrument collectors, Charles Byrne is a musical playground. Here you’ll find ukuleles, banjos, bones and spoons, but also classical guitars, violins and violas. Books and beautiful cases for sale make for great gift items as well. This family-owned shop has been part of Dublin for ages, literally, since 1870, and its instrument packed windows have watched the city go though magical changes. Inside Charles Byrne you will not only find unusual and old instruments but if you listen carefully, hear the song of Irish history echoing off its walls.

I actually found this shop by accident when I was walking around town the other day. I thought I was hallucinating because they use the German ‘Musik Instrumente’ instead of the English words, which I thought was cute. As Annie said, Byrnes have a wide selection of traditional Irish instruments, such as bodhrans and tin whistles, and they also have guitars. They not only do music instruments but also cups with music prints and teddy bears playing instruments and postcards and card games, CDs and pretty much everything to do with music… If you like music you’ll love Charles Byrne.

This establishment can boast itself as being Ireland’s oldest family owned music shop, pretty impressive feat. This music shop has a lot of traditional Irish instruments which is an excellent selling point for it. My friend lectures music in the UK and he bought a bodhrán here, he knows his music, obviously! He recommended them for their knowledge and passion for music. They do have other instruments but the Irish assortment is impressive. Waltons has a lot of the market so if you want to try somewhere else that is a little hidden away, gave this place a lash.

I am yet to find an instrument that I don’t like, and this litttle shop is one that I love. Yes it is tiny, chock full of intruments and run by two elderly people, but this is all absolutely part of the shops charm. The people who run it are as friendly and as helpful as they can be and I absolutely would give my business to these guys over waltons or elsewhere(not that I have anything against those shops). Often I find myself needing small items(specific slides, replacement bridges) that no other store supplies but these guys more often than not can rummage out what I need. Pay them a visit, you wont be dissappointed.
